The symptoms present with a normal facial complexion and a peaceful pulse, yet the patient feels heavy limbs, dizziness of the head and eyes, selective appetite, aversion to food odors, and a craving for sour and salty tastes. In severe cases, there may be alternating chills and fever, mental restlessness and oppression, vomiting of phlegm and water, irritability and fullness in the chest and diaphragm, and mental confusion with inability to sustain oneself. Mild cases require no medication and are harmless; this is a common condition during pregnancy. If the severity prevents eating, use Taishen (Codonopsis Root), Shaoren (Amomum Fruit, stir-fried and crushed), and Gancao (Licorice Root) each 1 qian; Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome, stir-fried with child's urine), Zhen Wumei (True Mume Fruit), and Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel) each 1.5 qian. Use Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, Ginger) as a guide, decoct in water, and take after meals.
Another prescription: Yanshi (Halitum, Salt) 3 fen, Wei Jiang (Stir-fried Ginger) 6 fen, Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia, Bamboo Shavings) 3 fen, Lao Mi (Old Rice, one pinch stir-fried), and Baitang (Rock Sugar) 3 qian. Decoct in water and take slowly. If roundworms are vomited up, add Huajiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, Sichuan Pepper) 2 fen and three Wumei fruits; decoct and take for immediate effect.
For pregnant women suffering from food stagnation, presenting with abdominal fullness, acid regurgitation, nausea, and anorexia, use Jiawei Liujunzi Tang (Modified Six Gentlemen Decoction): Taishen, Baizhu, Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, Pinellia Tuber), Chenpi, Fuling (Poria, Poria Cocos), Zhi Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange, stir-fried), Shenqu (Medicated Leaven, stir-fried), and Shaoren each 5 fen. Use Ginger as a guide, decoct in water, and take after meals.
For headache caused by external contraction, this is due to deficiency. Use Jiawei Xionggui Tang (Modified Ligusticum and Angelica Decoction): Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Chuanxiong Rhizome) and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Dong Quai) each 1.5 qian; Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, Scutellaria Root, wine-fried) and Baizhu each 1.5 qian.
Treatment for pregnant women should primarily focus on clearing heat. Diseases of the eyes, nose, throat, lips, and mouth mostly belong to heat patterns. Use Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, Evodia Fruit) 5 qian, grind into powder, mix with good warm vinegar, and apply to both soles of the feet. Wrap well with cloth. After one day and night, if the soles feel hot, it will heal. If not yet healed, change applications several times continuously, and apply again for another day and night; all will be cured. This has been tested repeatedly with miraculous results. Alternatively, use Liangge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Powder), modifying according to specific symptoms.
Liangge San: Tiao Qin (Scutellariae Radix, Scutellaria Root), Chuan Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, Coptis Rhizome), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, Gardenia Fruit, all wine-fried) each 8 fen; Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructum, Forsythia Fruit), Gancao, Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, Balloon Flower Root) each 1 qian; Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, Mint) 5 fen. Decoct in water and take.
This condition is caused by blood deficiency and blazing fire in the Triple Burner. Use Dangguishen (Dong Quai Root Heart), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, White Peony Root), Chuanxiong, Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix, Rehmannia Root), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, Prepared Rehmannia Root), and Chuanbai (Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex, Phellodendron Bark) each 1 qian. Decoct in water and take.
