凡饥年官民设厂施粥,多有奸徒搀和锻石,串通渔利南北皆然,不可不察。

In years of famine, when the government and common people set up porridge stations to distribute food, there are often deceitful individuals who mix in calcined stone powder (Duan Shi) and collude to seek illicit profits. This phenomenon is prevalent in both northern and southern regions and must be carefully observed and prevented.
Take three sheng of glutinous rice, wash it with water, and stir-fry it over low heat until cooked; take three sheng of sesame seeds, wash them with water, and stir-fry them over low heat until cooked. First, grind the glutinous rice into powder, then add the sesame seeds and grind them together into a fine powder. Additionally, use three jin of red dates, boil them until soft, remove the skin and pits, and mash them to form pills. Each pill should weigh five qian. Take one pill daily, swallowed with boiling water, which can alleviate hunger. If glutinous rice or red dates are unavailable, sticky rice and black dates may be used as substitutes. Producing this food during famine years accumulates boundless merit.
Another prescription: Peel chestnuts, remove the skin and pits of red dates, peel walnuts (Hetao), and remove the stems of dried persimmons. Take equal parts of each, steam for one to two hours, then remove and process further.
Yet another prescription: Take seven sheng of black beans and three sheng of sesame seeds. Wash with water and steam immediately without soaking for too long. After steaming, dry them in the sun, remove the shells, and steam again. Repeat the "steam-dry" cycle three times. Grind the mixture and form pills the size of longan fruits. Take one pill per dose; it can suppress hunger for three days.
Another prescription: Wash sweet potatoes thoroughly, steam them until cooked, and mash them when they are half-dry. Mix with glutinous rice porridge to form a paste-like consistency. Spread this paste on bamboo fences; the longer it is stored, the harder it becomes, resisting insects and decay. In times of famine, take a piece the size of a fist, boil it in a large pot of clear porridge, and eat it to sustain oneself against hunger. Alternatively, shape it like earth blocks and build walls with them for long-term storage, which is even more ingenious.
Furthermore, during famine relief efforts distributing porridge, hungry people are eager to eat. If the porridge is too hot, it will damage the gastrointestinal tract, often causing victims to collapse and die within a hundred steps after eating. It is advisable to cook the porridge at night, store it in large earthenware jars, and stir it evenly with a wooden stick the next morning before serving.
Moreover, extremely starving individuals should not consume dry rice or solid foods. They should be given very thin porridge in small amounts, fed dozens of times a day, ensuring they do not overeat. One method is to pour thin porridge onto a table for the starving to lick slowly. After several days of this diet, they may gradually consume small amounts of dry rice, but still not excessively. Prolonged starvation causes the intestines to shrink; sudden full meals often lead to fatal abdominal distension. During the Wuxu year of the Qianlong reign, many starving people died from gluttony during grain relief efforts in Hunan Province. Later, using this method saved countless lives.
