Scanty lactation is due to deficiency. It may result from excessive blood loss during childbirth, illness before childbirth, or poor postpartum care among servants and maids of poor families, leading to withered blood vessels. Or, at age forty, qi and blood gradually decline, all of which can cause lack of milk. Simply taking Tongmai San (Decoction for Unblocking Vessels) will naturally produce milk. If one recklessly uses herbs such as Manis Squama (Chuanshanjia, 穿山甲) and Viticis Semen (Wangbuliuxing, 王不留行), it is often ineffective. Even if flow is forcibly promoted, the milk will be thin and watery, causing short life for the infant, damaging qi and blood, leading to frequent postpartum illnesses, and drying up quickly, which is undesirable.
