A pregnant woman relies entirely on blood to nourish the fetus and qi (vital energy) to protect it. She should engage in regular physical activity and avoid excessive comfort or inactivity, ensuring that qi and blood circulate freely and the uterus remains active, thereby naturally avoiding illness. If one sits or lies down for prolonged periods, blood may stagnate and qi may become obstructed, leading to difficult labor. It is commonly observed that women engaged in hard field labor deliver easily; this is clear evidence.
First, one should consume less fried, roasted, and strongly flavored foods, as well as meats from animals such as cattle, sheep, donkeys, dogs, crabs, and turtles, which are considered toxic or heavy. Spicy and hot "stimulating" foods like ginger and pepper should also be avoided. Red amaranth (Hongxiancai) and purslane (Machixian) are particularly known to induce abortion and must strictly not be eaten. It is common to see poor women who eat coarse grains; they rarely experience threatened miscarriage during pregnancy and never suffer from dystocia at delivery. This is a clear demonstration of efficacy.
Second, sexual intercourse should be prohibited. From the second month of pregnancy, couples should sleep in separate beds. This preserves fetal qi (fetal vitality), ensuring smooth delivery, and results in offspring free from fetal toxins, skin sores, and boils, while also being likely to be intelligent and long-lived. Those prone to inducing abortion should especially heed this warning. Observe cattle, horses, dogs, and pigs: after conception, they do not mate, and there are no instances of abortion or difficult birth. Although humans and animals differ, the underlying principle is the same.
Third, violent anger must be avoided. One should not speak harsh words or use corporal punishment. Anger severely damages qi and blood, impairing their ability to nourish the fetus and increasing the risk of spontaneous abortion. Furthermore, if anger enters the fetus, the child is likely to suffer from chronic diseases. Therefore, during pregnancy, maintaining a calm and peaceful mind ensures fetal safety and health, resulting in children who are gentle and substantial.
Fourth, medication should be minimized. Pregnant women without illness need not take medicine, as doing so may cause unintended harm. Even if threatened miscarriage occurs, only stable, classical formulas should be used with careful modification. One must not heed ignorant women who prescribe arbitrary remedies. Indiscriminately using agents intended to stabilize the fetus, break qi stagnation, or open the chest can cause significant harm.
Fifth, intoxication by alcohol is forbidden. Whether medicinal wine or distilled spirits, all alcoholic beverages are prohibited during pregnancy. Intoxication confuses the spirit and mind, leading to fetal restlessness and threatened miscarriage.
Sixth, carrying heavy loads and climbing heights should be avoided. Carrying heavy loads causes qi and blood to stagnate, while climbing heights agitates qi and disturbs blood, both of which easily injure the fetus. There is also the danger of falling.
Seventh, bathing is contraindicated. In the month approaching delivery, one must not wash the head, bathe the body, or wash the feet. This strict prohibition is crucial, as the implications are significant.
