Longgu (Fossilized Bones and Teeth) 1 qian, Qingfen (Calomelas) 5 fen, Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) 1 qian, Kufan (Alumen Exsiccatum) 5 fen, Shexiang (Moschus) 5 li, ground into fine powder, and applied directly to the umbilicus.
Another prescription: Burn red woolen cloth into ash, grind into powder, and apply; effective.
Another prescription: Dry Marsiliae Herba (Ma Chi Xian) until charred, grind into powder, and apply.
Another prescription: Take old thatch grass from a straw-roofed house, grind into powder, and apply; extremely effective.
Another prescription: Kufan (Alumen Exsiccatum) and Shuigu Longgu (Water Dragon Bone, i.e., pyrite found in old ship hull seams), combined and ground into powder, and apply; very effective.
Another prescription: Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), stir-fried until charred, ground into powder, and apply; cure upon application.
When preparing to sever the umbilical cord, one must first bathe the infant with hot water to prevent moisture from entering. Hold the cord with one hand, and with the other hand push towards the umbilicus three or four times to ensure blood fills the umbilical cavity. About one cun away from the placenta, tie tightly with thread, cut with a porcelain shard, and do not allow umbilical blood to flow out, so that the infant's qi and blood will be vigorous and easy to nurture. If not cutting with a knife, bite through while wearing a single layer of clothing, then blow seven breaths of warm air onto the umbilicus to avoid the disease of Jiaofeng (Neonatal Tetanus). The reason for not using a knife is that iron instruments are cold and may damage the infant's vital qi. Alternatively, using the previously mentioned burning method is also excellent.
Another prescription: Kufan (Alumen Exsiccatum) and Pengsha (Borax) each 2.5 qian, Zhusha (Cinnabar) 2 fen, Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) and Shexiang (Moschus) each 5 li, combined and ground into powder. Whenever the newborn is washed after birth, sprinkle this powder on the umbilicus. Every time the diaper is changed, still sprinkle this powder. After finishing one dose, there will never be symptoms such as Neonatal Tetanus.
Within seven days after birth, if the infant's face is red and breathing is labored with hoarseness, this is Neonatal Tetanus (Qifeng). A blue vein rises above the umbilicus, rushing upwards to the heart area. If this vein reaches the heart, only one or two out of ten can be saved. Observe when this vein has not yet reached the heart area; use moxa wool to burn the head of this blue vein. The vein will retract downwards by about one cun. Then burn again at the retracted part of the vein; the vein will disappear and the illness will be cured. This has been tested repeatedly with success. The moxa ball should not be larger than a small black bean or a wheat grain. Burning with a lamp flame is also acceptable. Additionally, if there are small blisters on the gums, wipe them broken with a finger wrapped in cotton to save the life.
Another prescription: Egg white, dip a finger in it and rub the back. After a long time, hairs will grow out and prick the hand. Stop when they are about one fen long. If they grow to one cun long, wrap tightly with silk. Wait for a sign of improvement, then rub both temples and the corners of the mouth; the mouth will open naturally, with miraculous effect.
Another prescription: Among newborns, Neonatal Tetanus (Qifeng) is the most severe condition. It may be caused by cutting the umbilical cord too short, insufficient tightening allowing external wind to invade the umbilicus, or invasion by dampness and cold. Ancients had a secret for preventing Neonatal Tetanus, stating that on the third day and seventh day, if yellow appears in the inner corners of the infant's eyes, Neonatal Tetanus is certain. This method is perhaps not entirely accurate. Only by touching the infant's breasts, finding a small nodule within the breast tissue, is it a true sign. However, although many cases of Neonatal Tetanus involve nodules in the breasts, some do not; thus, this method is only three or four parts accurate. One should gently squeeze out the white fluid from the breast nodule for self-healing. Only when observing the infant sneezing frequently, crying more often, and having loose grip during breastfeeding, is it a true sign. Urgently use Mr. Xia Yuzhu's Lamp Fire Therapy for Neonatal Tetanus. His secret states: When Neonatal Tetanus first starts, the infant has a loose grip during breastfeeding, and sudden yellow color appears near the eyebrows at the inner corners of the eyes; urgent treatment is needed. If the yellow spreads to the nose, treatment is still easy; if it reaches the Renzhong (GV26) and Chengjiang (CV24) points, treatment is slightly difficult. If the lips are not puckered tight and there is slight puffing, it is still treatable. Once the lips are locked tight, the tongue is stiff, and the head is straight, do not treat. As soon as yellow appears at the brow center and nasal tip, accompanied by loose grip during breastfeeding and abnormal demeanor, take a rush pith stick dipped in sesame oil, adjust moisture appropriately, ignite it, and burn one scorch mark on the Fontanelle (Baihui region), one on Renzhong (GV26), one on Chengjiang (CV24), one on Shaoshang (LU11) at the end of both thumbs, six around the Umbilical Wheel (Qilun), one on the umbilical stump before it falls off, and one where it fell off. Total thirteen scorch marks. Wind will stop and yellow will recede (Extremely miraculous. First mark the acupoints with ink, then apply fire. The Fontanelle point is at the soft spot on the top of the head. Renzhong point is in the center of the philtrum below the nose. Chengjiang point is in the center of the depression below the lower lip. Shaoshang point is on the outer side of the thumb, also on the inner side, in the nail fold neither up nor down. The Umbilical Wheel point is the area surrounding the umbilicus close to the umbilical cord.) Lamp Fire Therapy for Neonatal Tetanus involves burning thirteen points: Fontanelle, brow center, Renzhong, Chengjiang, both thumbs' nails (named Shaoshang), Umbilical Wheel, and Umbilical Center, possessing the power to revive the dead.
