Use both hands to stroke from the arms towards the space between the two thumbs, performing this action forty to fifty times. Then, tie a rope tightly around the arm, prick the Shaoshang acupoint (LU11) with a needle—on the left hand for males and the right hand for females—and release blood; the condition will be cured immediately. For severe cases, prick more times, or induce bleeding from seven or nine fingers for faster effect. Subsequently, apply indigo flower paste to the affected area. Alternatively, grind adzuki beans (Vigna angularis) into fine powder, mix with aged vinegar, and apply as a poultice; if it dries, keep it moistened regularly.
Another prescription: Use Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Forsythiae Fructum (Lianqiao), Arctii Fructus (Niuzi), and Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), each 1.5 qian; Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) 0.8 qian. Decoct in water and take after meals. If swelling extends to the Taiyang channel area, add Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo) 1 qian; if swelling involves the area behind the ear, add Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha) and Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), each 1 qian.
Regarding the throat region, the left side is the pharynx (Yan), belonging to the Stomach; the right side is the larynx (Hou), belonging to the Lung. This area is the vital hub of the body and the gateway for respiration. The pharynx is located posterior to the larynx, governing food passage to the Stomach, also known as the esophagus, commonly called the "food throat" or "soft throat." The larynx is located anterior to the pharynx, governing air passage to the Lung, also known as the trachea, commonly called the "air throat" or "hard throat." Both lie beneath the tongue, which serves as the main connection for the throat. The epiglottis is situated above the throat and regulates opening and closing, acting as the gate for voice production. During swallowing, the tip of the tongue must press against the palate, causing the epiglottis to cover the airway, allowing food and drink to enter the pharynx and descend directly. If not covered, food entering the airway will cause choking. The pharynx, larynx, epiglottis, and tongue function interdependently; loss of any one would impair swallowing.
The pharynx and larynx are two distinct structures. Although located beneath the tongue, their pathways differ. The larynx is the lung tube, the portal of respiration, governing exhalation without intake, connecting with Heaven's Qi. The pharynx is the stomach tube, the pathway for food and fluids, governing intake without exhalation, connecting with Earth's Qi. One exhaling and one inhaling constitute the vital key of the body. "Throat Bi" refers to obstruction in the larynx where breathing is difficult and speech is impossible, indicating blockage of Heaven's Qi. "Pharyngeal pain" and "Ai pain" refer to the lower part of the pharynx, named Ai, where swallowing saliva and food is impaired, indicating blockage of Earth's Qi. Combined "Throat Bi" and "Pharyngeal-Ai pain" indicate disease in both organs, with simultaneous blockage of Heaven and Earth Qi.
