Colloquially known as "Snake-String Sore" (Chan Yao Huo Dan / Shingles), it varies in dry and damp types, and red and yellow colors, resembling strings of beads. In the dry type, the color is red, shaped like cloud patches with wind-like papules, causing itching and fever; this is caused by wind-fire in the Heart and Liver meridians. Treatment should involve Longdan Xiegan Tang (Gentiana Decoction to Drain the Liver), with external application of Ruyi Jinhuang San (Ruyi Golden Yellow Powder). In the damp type, if occurring alone on the waist and flanks, it is due to reckless Liver fire, treated with Chaihu Qinggan Tang (Bupleurum Decoction to Clear the Liver). Small blisters on the sore should be pricked with a needle, and Baiye San (Cupressus Leaf Powder) applied externally. If not treated promptly, when it encircles the waist, toxins enter the umbilicus causing bloating and stifling sensation, or enter the Heart causing vomiting and hiccups; clear the Heart with Qingxin San and protect the Heart with Huxin Wan urgently.
To treat Snake-String Sore, use old woven straw mats that have been slept on and retained sweat, burn them to ash, mix with sesame oil, and apply topically.
Another prescription: Semen Phaseoli Radiati (Chixiaodou) is ground into powder, mixed with albumen Ovi Galli (Jidanbai), and applied frequently. Alternatively, Herba Portulacae (Machixian) is pounded and applied. Both are extremely effective.
Emergency prescription for Snake-String Sore: This condition starts on the waist with small red spots, spreading in patches with itching. Severe cases involve body fever. If not treated early, it spreads gradually until both ends meet, attacking the Heart, leading to untreatable conditions. Urgently scorch the surrounding area with a lamp flame to stop spread. Internal medicine: Poria (Yunling/Fuling), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Radix Bupleuri (Chaihu), Semen Armeniacae Amarum (Niubangzi), Cortex Phellodendri (Huangbai), Flos Lonicerae Japonicae (Yinhua) each 1.5 qian; Radix Notopterygii (Qianghuo), Fructus Aurantii (Zhike), Radix Platycodonis (Jiegeng), Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong) each 1 qian; Folium Menthae (Bohe) 0.5 fen. Decoct in water and take. External medicine: Folium Platycladi (Cebaiye) fried yellow 5 qian; Lumbricus (Qiuyinfen) as needed; Cortex Phellodendri (Huangbai), Radix Rhei Palmati (Dahuang) 5 qian; Semen Phaseoli Radiati (Chixiaodou) 3 qian. Grind into fine powder, mix with Bilis Porci (Zhudan) and apply for cure.
