This condition is named "Blood Paralysis Syndrome" (Xuetan Zheng). If not treated promptly, it will lead to ulceration and pus discharge. Immediately use the ash from burning red-skin scallions for washing/lavaging, and internally take several cups of Dan Dou Chi Tang (Fermented Soybean Decoction) for self-recovery.
If this syndrome causes muscles to be completely atrophied, it is difficult to treat. Use San Leng (Rhizoma Sparganii) and E Zhu (Rhizoma Curcumae), each 1 qian (approx. 3-5g), ground into powder, taken with wine; it is extremely effective.
Child's feces (dry and solid are best, liquid should not be used), dried in shade, burned on a tile until charred, stopping when smoke ceases. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with tofu juice.
Another prescription: Chuan Lian Zi (Fructus Toosendanii) burned to ash and ground into powder, take 1 qian per dose, washed down with yellow wine. However, this is not as excellent as the previous formula. Externally, apply Wu Yu Mo (Evodiae Fructus powder) mixed with hot vinegar to the soles of both feet, change once every week until healed; this method is most wonderful.
Drink several bowls of salt-vinegar soup daily; it will heal itself in ten days.
This condition is named "Soul Separation Syndrome" (Lihun Zheng). Use Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix) 5 qian (those with strong constitution may use Ren Shen [Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma] 1 qian, or Gao Li Shen [Korean Ginseng] 3 qian), Chen Sha (Cinnabaris), Fu Ling (Poria), each 3 qian... This condition is named "Rat Diaphragm Disease" (Shuge Bing), caused by eating food that has been nibbled by overnight rats. Use Shi Da Gong Lao Ye (Leaf of Mahonia fortunei, also known as Shu Pa Cao [Rat-Fearing Grass]), leaves resembling a palm fan with five angles... (Text cuts off here)
This condition is named "Loss of Object Expectation Syndrome" (Shishuo Wuwang Bing). The patient acts as if desiring meat, others say they will give them a meal of pork, the patient becomes happy upon hearing this, meat is placed before the patient, but just as they are about to eat, it is withheld. This is due to the loss of their expectation for an object; no medicine is needed. When the patient sleeps and salivates from the mouth, they will heal themselves.
This is caused by evil spirits (Xie Sui). Burn dog feces (must be dry and white-colored) to produce smoke and fumigate; the more evil qi that comes out, the better, and it will heal itself once all is expelled.
Use medicinal thread (see formulas for carbuncles and toxins) to bind the root of the tail, tightening gradually; it will fall off naturally after half a month. After falling off, invite a famous doctor to diagnose the pulse and take more yin-nourishing medicines... (Text cuts off here)
Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix): Produced in Huaqing Prefecture is superior. It is said that the top grade there costs over one tael of silver per jin (approx. 500-600g). Recently, Hunan/Hubei and Guangdong/Guangxi prices are only 300-500 wen per jin, at most 700-800 wen; how can there be no fakes? Generally, those transparently black throughout are best; those slightly yellow in the center are secondary. Some use red/white radishes soaked in Di Huang juice to fake it; this requires careful discrimination.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma): Produced in Yuqian County is superior, but expensive and hard to get. Otherwise, only those white inside are usable; if not white, it is Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), which causes harm if used.
Fu Ling (Poria): Take whole slices and hold against light; slight fibrous membranes indicate authenticity. Recently, rice flour mixed with Poria powder sliced is often used to fake it. There are also cases of rice flour wrapped around pine roots grown into whole shapes; these must be carefully distinguished.
Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood): Authentic ones have hostwood centers, either on the side or in the middle, not always single; cutting open reveals fibrous membranes. Fake ones have a central hostwood, usually single, without membranes.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma): Most prone to insect damage, especially when exposed to wind. Store in new containers tightly sealed; it lasts years without spoiling. If stored with fried rice, spread it out overnight before use, otherwise it spoils easily. Fried rice can also breed insects. Alternatively, wrap in new cotton. Ren Shen hates sun exposure; fire drying is acceptable. Decocting Ren Shen requires running water; still water slows efficacy. Ren Shen is often fake and hard to identify, making it difficult for ordinary people to obtain, thus rarely used in collected prescriptions.
Gao Li Shen (Korean Ginseng): Often faked with Dong Yang Shen (Japanese Ginseng) or other drugs. The method involves wrapping in large red crinkled silk, steaming to penetrate color into wrinkles, then mixing with Long Yan Rou (Longan Aril) juice and drying. Color and taste are identical to authentic Korean Ginseng. To test authenticity, administer during Qi deficiency or fainting states and observe for efficacy.
Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix): Yellow color, sweet taste, soft branches, and chrysanthemum-heart pattern are best. Some are dyed sweet Dang Shen to fake it; efficacy is slow and weak.
E Bu Shi Cao (Centipedae Herba): Also known as Shi Hu Sui, Ye Yuan Sui, Ji Chang Cao, Di Hu Jiao, Di Tong Hao. Leaves small, flowers yellow, seeds like pepper. Found everywhere in steps and flatlands.
Han Lian Cao (Ecliptae Herba): Also known as Li Chang Cao, Mo Dou Cao, Mo Tou Cao, Mo Dong Cao. Stems slightly red, turning black immediately upon breaking.
Hong Ya Da Ji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix): Flesh slightly red indicates authenticity. White flesh is named Mian Da Ji, ineffective for sores/toxins.
Gu Shu (Broussonetia papyrifera / Paper Mulberry): Also known as Chu Shu, HT Shu. Leaves sometimes resemble cloud boards, sometimes not. Cutting the trunk yields sap.
Several times daily, after three days remove the heart, wash again, soak for 4-5 days. Take a pinch, place in a white porcelain basin, leave overnight. If the water color remains unchanged, it is safe. Wash 3-4 more times, drain, wrap in dough like a ball, bake in bran fire until the dough turns yellow on all sides and the internal medicine is thoroughly cooked. Remove, dry, stir-fry in pot until thorough, grind to powder. Its bitter-cold toxicity is purified through processing; it becomes sweet and warm, specifically eliminating hard knots, phlegm masses, and nodular toxins.
Mu Bie Zi (Semen Momordicae): Soak in water for half a month, boil in pot several times, then soak in hot water for several days. Scrape off skin and heart. Every day at Chen hour (7-9 AM), boil in sesame oil until oil foam disappears, then boil 100 times until black and brittle throughout. Scoop out with wire sieve, mix with fine powder of roasted red brick until the powder has an oily smell. Sieve to remove oily soil, replace with roasted red soil material, mix for one shichen (2 hours), sieve again. Process continuously for ten days without error. Stir-fry Mu Bie Zi with fine soil in a pot, mix in a basin, cover overnight, retrieve the seed, remove soil, grind to powder. This substance searches out wind-dampness entering bones/joints, dispels toxic phlegm凝结 (coagulated) in subcutaneous tissues. The extracted oil can be used in plaster preparation. This substance is highly toxic; if not properly processed, ingestion causes shaking and death. Must be cautious.
Ru Xiang (Olibanum): Those resembling nipples and transparent are good. Recently faked with Feng Xiang (Liquidambar Resin), sticky and hard to grind. For every 2 liang, stir-fry with 2.5 qian of rush pith until round, crisp, and powdery. Fan away rush pith, grind resin finely.
Mo Yao (Myrrha): Reddish like amber is good. Also stir-fried with rush pith, same as processing Ru Xiang.
Bing Pian (Borneolum Syntheticum): Often faked with Zhang Nao (Camphor). Those with tooth-like colors resembling plum blossom petals are good. Store with fir charcoal to prevent loss.
Xue Jie (Dragon's Blood): Sweet and salty taste, red color, stains fingernails true. If extremely salty and fishy-smelling, it is Hai Mu Xue (Sea Mother Blood) fake.
A Wei (Ferula Resin): Extremely foul odor. Take a little, rub on copper vessel overnight; if the rubbed area turns white like silver, it is authentic.
Peng Sha (Borax): Yellow like glue is authentic.
Sha Yuan Ji Li (Astragali Complanati Semen): Best produced in Tongguan. Flat like kidney beans, green skin sold in leather shops are authentic.
Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean): Also known as Fan Dou. Flat and red. Half-red/half-black is called Gui Yan Dou (Ghost Eye Bean); useless and harmful, absolutely do not use.
Wu Mei (Mume Fructus): Steamed green plums mixed with straw ash, dried. Shops often fake with small plums; must be homemade to be effective.
Shi Bing (Persimmon Cake): Large ones are best. Small wild persimmons are used to fake; harmful if used.
Bi Ma Zi You (Castor Oil): 5 sheng of castor seeds, crushed, boiled in 1 dou of water. Remove when white foam appears, stop when foam ends. Remove water, boil foam until it does not splatter when lighting a lamp.
Deng Xin Tan (Carbo Rushinis): Take a section of living bamboo, leave nodes at both ends, make a hole in the middle, stuff full of rush pith. Seal the hole with the original bamboo piece, wrap with mud. Bake in bran fire until bamboo becomes charcoal. Retrieve the rush pith charcoal inside.
E Jiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin): Non-odorous is best. Green color is superior. Odorous ones are definitely fake; better to substitute with good ox-hide gelatin.
Lu Rong (Deer Antler Velvet): Several types exist, good ones are hard to get. Slices are especially prone to faking. A person close to a velvet merchant took 1 jin of blood slices for deficiency, with no effect. Upon questioning, the merchant admitted under drunkenness that it was made from ox tails and pig blood mixed with medicine. The slices could roll on the palm, indistinguishable from real velvet.
Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer-Horn Gelatin): All gelatin is authentic if self-boiled. Deer-horn gelatin must be boiled from genuine Guandong deer horns to be effective. Sichuan horns or fish-shaped horns that are white and long are weak in efficacy.
Gui Ban (Tartarochelys Carapace): Raw Gui Ban is potent. Pharmacies often mix in boiled Gui Ban; must distinguish.
Gui Jiao (Tortoise Shell Gelatin): Should be self-boiled. Plates should be thick and black; thin and yellow ones are weak.
Lai Xia Ha (Toad): Also known as Lai Tuan, Lao Chan. Red eyes and absence of 'eight-character' patterns on the abdomen indicate unusable specimens.
Qiang Lang (Scarabaeus): Also known as Tui Che Chong, Tui Shi Chong. Identified by rolling human feces into balls like carts.
Sao Jia Zi (Blatta orientalis / Oriental Cockroach): Originally named Xiao Jia Chong, also known as Tou You Po. In Jiangsu called KT. Has wings, flies, purple oily color. Found near stoves and... (Text cuts off here)
Yan You (Limax / Slug): Originally named Kuo Yu, also known as Bi Ti Chong. Shape resembles... (Text cuts off here)
Wo Niu (Helix Pomatia / Snail): Has whiskers on head, spiral shell on tail.
Lou Gu (Gryllotalpa / Mole Cricket): Also known as Hui Gu, i.e., Tu Gou (Earth Dog).
Meng Chong (Tabanus / Horsefly): Size of a bee, abdomen slightly flattened, yellow-green, likes feeding on horse/cattle blood.
