This is caused by wind pathogenic factors invading the Liver and Kidney viscera. Use two Xuanmu Gua (Chaenomeles speciosa fruits), remove the lid and pulp, add Ermeiyao (Myrrha) two liang and Rushi (Olibanum) two qian half, place them together inside the fruit, cover with the lid and tie securely, steam over rice for three to four times, then grind into a paste. Each time use three qian, add Ban zhang Shengdihuang Zhi (Half cup of juice from fresh Rehmanniae Radix) and two zhan of good hot wine, dissolve and take warm.
Another prescription: One sheng of Heidou (Black Soybeans), steamed until soft/melted, wrapped in cloth to make a pillow, naturally effective.
Zhen Pengsha (Borax) ground into powder, dip Dengxincao (Junci Medullae) into it and apply to the four corners of the eyes; when tears flow, relief is felt. Apply continuously three times, immediate cure.
Diseases of the throat are the most dangerous. If pain arises suddenly within moments and is unbearable, it belongs to Cold syndrome. If pain develops slowly, it belongs to Heat syndrome. The *Neijing* states: Sudden onset is not Fire (Heat), slow onset is not Cold. Distinguishing between Deficiency-Cold and Excess-Heat requires wisdom, so that prescriptions may be administered without error. This is the profound discussion by Linwu Shansren. Furthermore, for all throat conditions, one must carefully consult the various prescriptions before and after in this section and deliberate on their use for best results.
Also known as Hou Bi (Throat Obstruction). Those arising above the Guan (epiglottis) are mild; those below the Guan are severe. In this condition, if the throat closes for even a moment, it is incurable. For men, trace from the center of the nose bridge to the top of the head; for women, trace from the back of the head to the top; for children, examine the Hegu area (webbing between thumb and index finger) of both hands. If there are small red blisters, pierce them with a silver needle, and the Hou E (tonsillar swelling) will rupture. Avoid exposure to lamp light. Simultaneously, crush old garlic into a size similar to a broad bean, and apply to Jingqu acupoint (located behind the Cun pulse at the wrist on the radial side, distal to the styloid process of radius), left for men and right for women. Cover with a clam shell and bind tightly (other covers may also be used). After a short while, a blister will rise; pierce it with a silver needle, wipe away the fluid to expel toxic vapors, and recovery will be immediate. Subsequently, take Ganjie Tang (Licorice and Platycodon Decoction, see other internal/external备用 formulas) to prevent recurrence. In places without medicine, abstaining is also acceptable.
Another prescription: Zaogiao (Gleditsia sinensis fruit) (do not use worm-eaten ones), ground into powder, mixed with vinegar and taken orally, one qian; for severe cases, one qian four or five fen. Or, dip an goose feather into the medicine and insert into the throat to stir.
Another prescription: Take one goose feather, attach one fen of real Tongyou (Vernicia fordii oil), insert into the throat and roll/stir; phlegm will be expectorated along with the oil. Drink Licorice water to resolve the oil toxicity.
Another prescription: Burn fingernails to ash and blow into the throat; the tonsillar swelling will immediately rupture. Extremely convenient and miraculous. Or, burn Dengcao (Junci Stamen) to ash and blow into the throat, also extremely effective. Additionally, the various prescriptions for throat diseases listed later are all highly effective and can be used.
