Dried Fructus Chaenomelis (Mugua, 木瓜) and Semen Arecae (Binglang, 槟榔), each 2.5 qian; Radix Evodiae (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸) 1.5 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. Alternatively, use one teacup of Glycine max seed (Heidou, 黑豆) and 3 qian of Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Gancao, 甘草), decoct into a concentrated juice for better efficacy.
Another prescription: Radix Astragali (Huangqi, 黄芪) 5 qian. Decoct in water; taking one or two doses can cure the root cause.
Folium Impatientis (Fengxianhua Ye, 凤仙花叶) and Folium Lycii (Gouqi Ye, 枸杞叶). Decoct together into a concentrated decoction for fumigation and washing, and also apply freshly pounded pulp topically.
Another prescription: Pounded large apple snail (Tianluo, 田螺) applied topically.
When this condition occurs, the legs and feet swell and hurt unbearably, caused by excessive alcohol consumption. Various treatments have failed. Only using four liang of aged Shaoxing wine lees (Shaoxing Laojiuzao, 绍兴老酒糟) (or local aged wine lees if unavailable), combined with one liang of pine needles (Songzhen, 松针/松毛), pounded together, mixed with the finest distilled liquor (Shaojiu, 烧酒), heated, and applied to the affected area. Wrap tightly with cloth; reheat when cool. Apply continuously day and night until pain ceases. One batch is sufficient for three applications. Mild cases may heal in three to five batches; severe cases require over ten batches for a permanent cure with no recurrence. This has been tested repeatedly with miraculous results.
Another prescription: Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Cangzhu, 苍术) decocted in wine and taken orally allows immediate walking.
Radix Clematidis (Weilingxian, 威灵仙) and Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae (Niuxi, 牛膝), equal parts, made into pills. Take dozens of pills with warm water on an empty stomach, or preferably with wine. Avoid tea. Long-term use eliminates the disease. Weilingxian disperses true qi; therefore, tonics should be taken separately to consolidate the primordial essence. Note that genuine Weilingxian is rare; most are fake fine roots. Genuine ones are identified by their extremely bitter taste, purple-black color resembling Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连), brittle texture, dust upon breaking, and black-white halos at the fracture cross-section, commonly known as "quyu eye" (Quyu Yan, 鸲鹆眼). Possession of these traits confirms authenticity and ensures miraculous efficacy.
This condition is named Crane's Knee Wind (Hexikfeng, 鹤膝风). Dominance of wind causes wandering pain; dominance of cold causes stabbing pain like awls; dominance of dampness causes swelling. Inability to flex indicates pathology in sinews; inability to extend indicates pathology in bones. Difficulty in movement suggests bone involvement. Over time, the lower limbs swell and thicken while the thighs atrophy. Pain exists without pus, and color remains unchanged; this is a critical, difficult-to-treat stage. Early treatment is essential. Use fresh Rhizoma Angelicae Dahuricae (Baizhi, 白芷) boiled in wine to make a paste, stored in porcelain bottles. Take 2 qian daily with aged wine internally, and apply 2-3 qian externally to the lesion until resolution. Alternatively, internally administer Yanghe Tang (Warm the Softening Decoction - see formulas for carbuncles and sores); externally, apply powder of Radix Euphorbiae Pekinensis (Daji, 大戟) and Radix Kansui (Gansui, 甘遂) mixed with honey (or white mustard seed powder mixed with wine).
Another prescription, He Shou Wu Wine: Decoct large Polygonum multiflorum (He Shou Wu, 何首乌) in wine and drink until intoxicated. Pound the dregs and apply to the knee. Several applications can cure it. Permanently avoid eating loach (Qiuyu, 鳅鱼) and black fish (Heiyu, 黑鱼).
Another prescription, Four Spirits Decoction (Sishen Jian, 四神煎): Raw Radix Astragali (Huangqi, 黄芪) 8 liang, Cortex Polygalae (Yuanzhi Rou, 远志肉) and Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae (Niuxi, 牛膝) each 3 liang, Radix Dendrobii (Shihu, 石斛) 4 liang. Decoct in ten bowls of water until two bowls remain. Add one liang of Flos Lonicerae Japonicae (Jinyinhua, 金银花) and decoct until one bowl remains. Drink in one go. After ingestion, feel intense heat in the legs, cover warmly and sleep. Sweat profusely; after sweating subsides, slowly remove covers and avoid wind. One dose removes half the illness; a second dose cures the root. Effective regardless of duration.
Another prescription, Five Saints Powder (Wusheng San, 五圣散): Resina Incensi (Ruxiang, 乳香) and Resina Myrrhae (Moyao, 没药) each 1.5 liang, Cortex Lycii (Digupi, 地骨皮) and Ferrum Oxydatum Rubrum (Wumingyi, 无名异) each 5 qian, Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香) 1 fen. Grind into powder. Mix with juice of Herba Plantaginis Lanceolatae (Cheqian Cao, 车前草) and boiled wine, then apply to the lesion. A patient suffering for five years was completely cured after three days of application.
