[Preface]
The following volume, *Q&A on Seventy-Two Eye Diseases* (Yanke Qishier Zheng Wen Da), according to the Wan Yi Wen Yong Weekly Edition, states: This book was transmitted from Li Gong Fang Zhi Yong Zhou of Zhuolu, who was proficient in medicine and hand-copied it. The "Huoranzi" mentioned in the annotations is Yong Zhou's courtesy name. In the fourth month of summer in the Yihai year of Guangxu (1875), I suffered from a severe eye disease. Mr. Wang Zhentian of Jinling advised that heavy bitter-cold agents should be used, and thus handed me this book for verification. I subsequently took Sanhuang Tang (Three-Yellow Decoction) for seven doses before recovering. Reading the entire book, the content is detailed, prudent, concise, and appropriate; it indeed possesses unique transmission origins. It was first published in the Dingyou year of the Daoguang reign (1837). After the chaos of war, few copies remained, so it was reprinted to broaden its dissemination. Recalling ten years ago, when I suffered from an eye disease in Eastern Guangdong, I received a secret prescription from Master Ye Tianshi, which has also been reprinted. However, that prescription stops at Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), whereas observing this book represents a further advancement. The Way of Medicine is truly difficult! Readers of this book must exercise caution. Recorded by Mei Qizhao of Nanchang at Zhanyuan, Jiangnan Provincial Administration Office, in the fourth month of the Bingzi year of Guangxu (1876).
Question 1: The eyes have two pupils, just as the sky has the sun and moon. What is the cause of sudden blurriness or dimness? Answer: All due to excess in alcohol and sexual activity, excessive worry, thought, sorrow, and crying, or drunkenness and overeating, leading to uneven distribution of blood in the zang organs, depression of the Liver Meridian, thereby causing illness. It is suitable to apply Huye Zhenzhu Gao (Tiger Liquid Pearl Ointment) and take Mingmu Liuqi Yin (Brighten Eyes Qi-Flowing Drink).
Mingmu Liuqi Yin: Treats visual obstructions (cataracts/opacities), hidden dryness and difficulty opening the eyes, cold tears due to blood-wind, frequent sudden redness, unclear vision, and black spots in the eyes. Dahuang (Rhubarb Root, processed), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus, fried), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Ganju (Chrysanthemi Flos), Baijili (Tribuli Fructus, fried, thorns removed), Xixin (Asari Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, fried), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) each 6 fen, decocted in water.
Question 2: What is the cause of red and swollen eyes? Answer: Heat pathogens from the five zang organs attacking internally, causing sudden flourishing of Heart Fire, all resulting from alcohol consumption. It is suitable to apply Qinglonghu Ye Gao (Green Dragon Tiger Liquid Ointment) and take Xixin San (Clear Heart Powder) and Yanggan Wan (Sheep Liver Pill) (formula see Question 71).
Xixin San: Treats Liver heat transmitting to the Heart Meridian, accumulated heat attacking upwards, eyelid dryness and pain, eyeball pain, excessive heat and wind. Chishao (Red Peony Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Dahuanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix). Decocted in water, taken after meals.
Question 3: What is the cause of red eyes without pain? Answer: This is Liver Excess. The Liver is the organ storing blood. When the Liver is excess, blood is abundant; abundance leads to blood and qi attacking upwards, penetrating the pupil, hence red but not painful. If pain is severe enough to prevent sitting or lying down, it is suitable to apply Fenglin Yangnao Yu (Phoenix Unicorn Sheep Brain Jade) and take Xiegan San (Drain Liver Powder).
Xiegan San: Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) 5 qian, Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) 1 liang, Gancao (Licorice Root) 1 qian, ground into powder together. Take 2 qian each time, delivered with hot water.
Question 4: What is the cause of red eyes with dimness, black clouds rising, and redness at the outer canthus (Da Jiao)? Answer: This is Liver Deficiency. The Liver belongs to Wood, and Wood generates Fire. When the child steals from the mother [Fire draws from Liver/Wood], there is dimness; when Fire flares, Wood declines. If Heart Fire is flourishing, blood is in excess, penetrating the outer canthus and invading the pupil spirit, hence both red and dim. It is suitable to apply Huye Gao (Tiger Liquid Ointment). For Liver Excess, take Xiegan San (see Question 3); for Liver Deficiency, take Budan San (Tonify Gallbladder Powder); for Flourishing Heart Fire, take Xiexin San (Drain Heart Powder).
Budansan: Treats internal and external opacities of black and white parts and Gallbladder Deficiency. The Liver and Gallbladder are tonified by draining. Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Jili (Tribuli Fructus), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Gancao (Licorice Root) each 2 qian, ground into powder together. Take 2 qian each time, delivered with rice soup.
Xiexin San: Treats red and painful eyes due to Heart Fire Excess. Gancao (Licorice Root) 2 qian, Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) 5 qian, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 3 qian, ground into powder together. Take 2 qian each time, delivered with Dengxin Tang (Junci Medulla Decoction).
Question 5: What is the cause of red and painful outer canthus? Answer: This is Heart Excess. The outer canthus belongs to the Heart, representing the Fire position of the South. When Heart Fire flourishes, the outer canthus becomes red and painful. It is suitable to apply Qinglong Gao (Green Dragon Ointment) and take Xixin San (Clear Heart Powder) and Sanhuang Tang (Three-Yellow Decoction).
Xixin San: Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Beichaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Gancao (Licorice Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix), Danzhuyeh (Phyllostachys Viridis Folium) each equal parts, ground into powder, taken three times daily.
Sanhuang Tang: Used for pouring out hot tears, gritty and painful eyes, photophobia, and swollen eyelids. Use Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) each equal parts, all fried, decocted in water and taken.
Question 6: What is the cause of redness at the inner canthus? Answer: This is Heart Deficiency. The Heart belongs to Fire, and Fire generates Earth, so Fire is the mother of Earth. When Earth is excess, Fire is deficient, like a fat child and a thin mother. It is suitable to apply Huye Zhenzhu Hupo Gao (Tiger Liquid Pearl Amber Ointment) and take Buxin San (Tonify Heart Powder).
Buxin San: Treats unceasing pain. Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 1.5 liang, Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome) 1 liang, Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) 1.5 liang, Fencacao (Licorice Root), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix, heart removed)... [Text incomplete here regarding specific herbs and dosages].
Question 7: What is the cause of many white opacities in the eyes? Answer: The Lung belongs to Metal, and Metal generates Water. If Water is flourishing, facial wind membranes form, blocking the essence of the Lung orifices, relying only on Lung support, becoming hard and causing qi stagnation leading to opacity. If Metal is not flourishing, it cannot generate Water; if Water cannot be generated, the Lung itself becomes dry. It is suitable to apply Zhenzhu Gao (Pearl Ointment) and take Bufei San (Tonify Lung Powder) and Xixin San (Clear Heart Powder).
Bufei San: Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 5 qian, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 1 liang, Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) 4 qian, Chishao (Red Peony Root) 5 qian, Sangpi (Mori Cortex) 1 liang, Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) 4 qian, Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus) 4 qian, Tingli (Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen) 5 qian, Digupi (Lycii Cortex) 8 qian, Ganju (Chrysanthemi Flos) 4 qian, Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) 8 qian, Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) 4 qian, Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) 4 qian, Gancao (Licorice Root) 4 qian, Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) 4 qian, ground into fine powder, take 3 qian each time.
Question 8: What is the cause of opacities with excessive non-coagulating tears? Answer: This is Lung collapse and Liver Deficiency. It is suitable to apply Zhenzhu Hupo Gao (Pearl Amber Ointment) and take Ejiao San (Donkey-Hide Gelatin Powder) and Feifei San (Nourish Lung Powder) (see Question 7).
Ejiao San: Bai Fuling (Poria) 2 qian, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 1 qian, Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome) 1 qian, Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, fried into pearls) 2 qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 1 qian, Ginger 3 slices, Jujube 2 pieces, decocted in water, taken at any time.
Question 9: What is the cause of photophobia and aversion to bright light? Answer: This is Spleen Excess. The Spleen belongs to Earth; Earth receives dampness and transmits it to the Lung; the Lung receives evil fire from the Heart Meridian and transmits it to the eyes. When the Taiyang meridian receives damp-heat, it overcomes Spleen Earth; Earth excess causes muscle congestion and difficulty opening, due to the transmission of dampness, hence photophobia. It is suitable to apply Zhenzhu Gao (Pearl Ointment) and take Xipi Yin (Wash Spleen Drink) and Mimeng Wan (Mimeng Pill).
Xipi Yin: Treats swollen and red painful eyelids. Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Chishao (Red Peony Root), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Chuanshanjia (Manis Squama, fried), Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix)... [Text incomplete].
Mimeng Wan: (This formula appears later, adjust dosage accordingly.) Mimenghua (Buddlejae Flos), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Shijueming (Haliotidis Concha, soaked in salt water and fried), Qingjingshi (Pyromorphite)... [Text incomplete].
Question 10: What is the cause of unclear vision? Answer: This is Spleen Deficiency. The Spleen belongs to Earth, the Liver belongs to Wood; Wood overcomes Earth. Green and Yellow contend, but Yellow cannot overcome Green, hence unclear vision. It is suitable to apply Zhenzhu Gao (Pearl Ointment) and take Cangzhu Tang (Atractylodis Rhizoma Decoction) and Bushen Wan (Tonify Kidney Pill) (see Question 11).
Cangzhu Tang: Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soaked in rice water and fried) 1.2 qian, Gaoben (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 1 qian, Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) 1 qian, Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) 1 qian, Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome) 1 qian, Gancao (Licorice Root)... [Text incomplete].
Question 11: What is the cause of black spots like flying cicadas or flies? Answer: This is Kidney Deficiency. The Kidney belongs to Water; if Water is dried up, then Kidney Deficiency exists. It is suitable to apply Huye Qinglong Gao (Tiger Liquid Green Dragon Ointment) and take Zhuling Tang (Polypori Decoction) and Bushen Wan (Tonify Kidney Pill).
Zhuling Tang: Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Zhuling (Polyporus), Roucongrong (Cynomorii Herba, washed in wine), Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus), Fupenzi (Rubiae Fructus), no guiding agent, decocted in water and taken.
