"Kuican Pian" (Remnants of Sashimi)
Abstract "Kuican Pian" consists of one volume, authored by Shen Pingru from Kuaiji. Rare copies are available in the market; this secret manuscript was collected by Mr. Qiu Jisheng, Director of our Society. The book contains seventeen essays on discussions, biographies, etc., some discussing medicinal materials, others exploring pathology, some辨伪纠错 (correcting errors and fakes), and others explaining ancient prescriptions. All can express unique insights and form a school of thought. The author claimed: In his youth, he resided in Jiangning (modern Nanjing). Due to changes in local water and soil, he suffered from illnesses repeatedly, lying in bed for dozens of days nearly dying, but recovered through Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). After recovery, he paid attention to medicine, intending to prevent and treat diseases, not daring to harbor the ambition of practicing medicine. This shows that he had ample exploration in this field. Those who made inventions in TCM often came from small books; reading this book can serve as proof for my statement.

Essay on Examining Secretly Transmitted Prescriptions
Mencius said: Dwelling changes temperament, nourishment changes the body. The *Suwen* (Basic Questions) states: In the East, near the sea, people eat fish and prefer salt; their skin is dark and pores loose, prone to sores and ulcers, treated with Bian stones (lithotripsy); in the West, living in hills, windy and hard soil, people eat refined food and fat, diseases arise internally, treated with toxic drugs; in the North, high ground, cold wind and ice, people live wild and eat dairy/meat, prone to internal cold, treated with moxibustion; in the South, low ground, humid and foggy, people prefer sour food making skin tight, prone to spasms and bi-syndrome (painful obstruction), treated with fine needles; in the Center, flat and humid land, people eat mixed foods without labor, prone to Wei syndrome (flaccidity) and inability to squat/walk, treated with Daoyin (guiding and pulling) and Anjue (massage). The *Kongzi Jiayu* (Family Sayings of Confucius) states: People from hard soil are rigid, from soft soil are cowardly, from black soil are delicate, from fertile soil are beautiful, from barren soil are ugly. Observing this, human physique is generated by changes in water, soil, and diet; how can one not be cautious in choosing lifestyle, clothing, and diet? Thus, people in places with Goji and Chrysanthemum live long, while those harmed by wine and lust die young. The Five Elements cycle, generating and overcoming, follow constant laws. Excess causes harm, control follows balance; one cannot deviate. If Kidney Qi is too strong, it hinders the Heart, causing palpitations and confusion; if Heart Qi is too旺盛 (prosperous), it damages the Lungs, causing cough and vexation; if Lung Qi is too full, it injures the Liver, causing eye discharge and tears; if Liver Qi is too盛 (abundant), it overacts on the Spleen, causing undigested diarrhea and distension; if Spleen Qi is too full, it harms the Kidneys, causing Wei Bi (paralysis) and leg swelling. These are all excess harming and losing normalcy. Sages created medicines, acupuncture, massage, Daoyin, and Zhuyou (incantations) to balance and treat them, correcting deviations. Decoctions were created by Yi Yin, flourished by Zhang Zhongjing (Changsha Taishou), and later scholars developed the Seven Formulas and Ten Categories, Jun-Chen-Zuo-Shi (Monarch-Minister-Assistant-Courier) combinations. One must carefully examine contrary, fearful, repulsive, and preferred properties to compound formulas. A formula is a formula because it directs correctly without violation, is plain and elegant, appreciated by all. Famous ones in medical texts include Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction), Qinglong (Azure Dragon), Baihu (White Tiger), San Chengqi (Three Inheriting Qi), Sixi Xin (Four Draining Heart) for expelling evil and returning to righteousness; Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Bawu (Eight Substances), Shiquan Dabu (Ten Complete Tonification), Liuwei Dihuang (Six Flavor Rehmannia), Wuzi Yanzong (Five Seeds Procreating), Qibao Meiran (Seven Treasures Beautiful Beard), Jianzhong (Establish Middle), Buzhong Yiqi (Tonify Middle Boost Qi), Huqian Wan (Tiger Crouching), Heche (Placenta) for nurturing origin and supporting weakness. Medicines do not exceed ten ingredients, effective instantly against symptoms. Why seek strange things like Chijian (Astragalus Complanatus), Qingzhi (Ganoderma), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Goubao (Dog Gallstone) for miraculous effects? Now, many gather smelly/hot/astringent items from animals (fish, shellfish, fur, naked), such as Naqi (Otter Bladder), Goushen (Dog Kidney), Haima (Seahorse), Gejie (Gecko), Quanxie (Scorpion), Hongqian (Menstrual Blood), assisted by Guizhi, Fuzi, Huajiao (Sichuan Pepper), Wuzhuyu, Nao (Borneol), She (Musk), mixing dozens of pungent/foul substances into one formula, ignoring contrary/preferred properties or Jun-Chen-Zuo-Shi roles, boasting names claiming to rival creation, praising functions to turn the universe. Relying on plundering nature for instant effect, satisfying desires, ignoring hidden disasters, leading to sudden major illnesses after accumulation, shocking and untreatable cases are common. This stems from charlatans' bewitchment and nobles' eagerness to hear, ignoring heaven's constant laws and sages' supreme theories. As stated: Grains nourish, vegetables fill, fruits assist; Five Elements generate, Five Zang remain peaceful, following heaven's norm and earth's advantage. Insisting on "human will conquers heaven," one ignores that long-term use of Quanbie Wan (Whole Turtle Pill) may cause turtles to grow in the abdomen killing the body, or excessive Longgu (Fossilized Bone) powder may cause intestinal abscesses killing life; predecessors have suffered these. Confucius said: Do not taste what you do not understand. Understanding means knowing drug quality and bodily suitability before taking. How can one ignore inherent conditions and blindly try, violating prohibitions against treating deficiency as excess or vice versa, losing balance and causing disaster, even exhausting Yin with hyperactive Fire? Classics say: Fragrant herbs cause madness, mineral drugs cause epilepsy. Must one not be cautious? Moreover, tranquility and emptiness allow True Qi to follow; the Yellow Emperor's health secrets are models. Meat-eaters are vulgar and short-sighted; Cao Gui's war discussion is worth learning. If one does not shake essence, does not tire spirit, has regulated lifestyle, one can live long. Thus, sufficient Qi means no hunger, sufficient Spirit means no sleep, sufficient Essence means no lust. Cherishing the body's treasures, why rely on external things? Between heaven and earth, Earth is mother of all; in the body, Stomach is sea of water and grain. Saying goes: Regulating diet is good prescription for disease prevention; regulating Spleen and Stomach is the royal way of medicine. To prepare for rain, engage in Spleen and Stomach regulation. Then diet strengthens, Grain Qi transforms to Essence, Spirit and Qi become sufficient naturally, needing no drug support. Poem: Cold night boring, leak long, lighting lamp sitting reading Qi-Huang (Yellow Emperor classics), Sages' profound words are like metal/stone, Charlatans' boasts belong to Lao-Zhuang, Chewing Su-Ling (Suwen/Lingshu) not for debate, Caution in distinguishing purple from red (false from true), Zhongsi (Locusts) since ancient times called Western Bo (King Wen), never see transmitted seed-preserving formulas.
Essay on Nourishing Yin as the Primary Task in Health Preservation
Between heaven and earth, Yang moves vigorously, Yin acts quietly; this is Substance (Ti). Yang is often in excess, Yin is often deficient; this is Function (Yong). However, Yang is the function of Yin, Yin is actually the substance of Yang. Thus Yang cannot generate without Yin, Yin cannot grow without Yang. Visible in the Ji-Ji hexagram, and Xi-Kan meaning must be examined. Danxi alone emphasized nourishing Yin; later generations criticized his drugs as too cold-cooling, easily damaging vital Qi, promoting Fire-tonifying methods, failing to follow source mysteries, knowing only superficial theories. Using cold-cooling drugs is draining Fire, not nourishing Yin. What is nourishing? Preventing Yang's excess-dryness from consuming True Yin, preserving the Tianyi (Heavenly One) origin. Now Water is insulted by Fire; how can illness not require strengthening Water's root to control Sunlight, borrowing Northern bitter-cold flavors to save it, keeping Xi-Kan meaning? Humans need Water and Fire to live; neither can be neglected nor favored excessively. More importantly, know that Yang returns easily but Yin is hard to nourish, making it the primary task. Compare Water and Fire in daily use: Fire is temporary and limited, Water is constant and extensive. Fire ignites fast, Water is hard to obtain and slow. Ten days of rain cannot match three days of sun exposure. Fire hidden in ash dies slowly; adding wood makes it burn instantly, easy force, fast result. Water stored in vessel decreases in ten days, dries in a month, nothing grows, all things consume it. Without preservation, how can it last and moisten? Human Essence and Blood are Water, are Yin, responding to myriad matters daily, how can they not deplete? Thus preservation effort must be thought of thrice daily. Water is quiet; extreme quiet generates movement. Hence: Kidney stores Wisdom. Wise love Water. Perception generates movement. Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) conceives in Taiyin (Greater Yin); Yin is actually Yang's substance. Shaoyang Jia-Wood Qi arises, all things move out, then Yang is Yin's function. Yet now people like Fire-tonifying, citing Lu Dongbin (Pure Yang) attaining Dao, not realizing what "gathering Yin to tonify Yang" means, nor the mystery of Turtle-Snake pairing at North Pole, or Sage's instruction to preserve Night Qi? Observing those taking hot pills/Golden Elixirs, light cases get carbuncles/ulcers, strange diseases emerge; severe cases exhaust True Yin and die suddenly, common everywhere. Thus Ji-Ji prevents final chaos, Xi-Kan gains trust, truly so. Health preservers, how can they ignore nourishing Yin as urgent, being confused by Fire-tonifying rumors? Objects with substantial bodies have grand functions; none exist without substance.
Essay on Fuzi, Wuzhuyu, and Ganjiang
Classics say: Toxic drugs treat disease, remove five-tenths; non-toxic drugs treat disease, remove nine-tenths. Comparing both, why so confused? Reaching Shaoyin directly, dispelling cold saving collapse, none equals Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root); going well to Jueyin, drying dampness stopping pain, none exceeds Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit); dispersing exterior warming middle, benefiting Spleen opening diaphragm, Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) is superior. These three are indeed generals breaking gates and seizing life in Three Yin meridians, but most fierce among heat drugs. Overdose/misuse causes bleeding and rebellious upward flow dangers. Their function is like warriors Zhu Jia and Guo Jie, trusting actions, quick to help emergencies, sacrificing lives, saving death/life with morning-evening effect? But poor management leads to breaking laws via violence, mocked by peers. Their Qi is male, toxic, fast, fierce; flavors heavy, biased Yang lacking Yin. Thus Fuzi gets Ganjiang hotter, gets Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) moving better; Wuzhuyu gets Ganjiang more dispersing; without sweet-slow monitoring, prone to galloping accidents. Bajun Wan uses Guizhi/Fuzi to eliminate Yin shadows, only one-tenth of total material; Zuojin Wan uses Wuzhuyu to open Liver stagnation, but Huanglian (Scutellaria Root) is five times more. Wang Haogu warned: Tonifying Fire must fear drying Water; Wutou (Aconite) and Fuzi should not be given casually unless body cold, limbs cold, pulse deep/slow, cautioning beginning-to-end prudence? Yet ancients took Wutou/Fuzi/Huajiao/Wuzhuyu lifelong reaching old age healthy, due to different constitutions, accidental events, not as norms. Zichan discussed politics: Water is weak, fearing people play and die; now drugs play with fierce Fire, regretting too late, why? They say: Arsenic/Poison/Crocodile are toxic, forgetting "stop when disease hits" warning.
Biography of Huangqin and Tianhuafen
Mountain herb Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) comes from Zigui, Shu. Bitter taste, cold nature, thick Qi thin flavor, Yin within Yang, green color, specifically travels Shaoyang entering Lung/Stomach, ascending/descending, friendly with Huanglian, Houpo, Chaihu, dislikes Congshi, fears Lilu, Dansha, Mudanpi. Cooperating successfully: with Wine ascends upper, clears Upper Jiao blood stasis, clears phlegm benefits diaphragm; with Pig Bile removes Liver/Gallbladder Fire, dispels Spleen/Stomach damp-heat with Chaihu relieves alternating chills/fever; with Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala) is holy medicine for calming fetus; with Sangbai (Mulberry Root Bark) drains Lung Fire, requiring old dry roots, alias "Rotting Intestine Jealous Wife"; with Shaoyao (Peony), Huanglian, Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange), Houpo treats dysentery pus/blood, abdominal pain tenesmus, selecting fine solid new roots, alias Ziqin/Tiaoqin. Zhang Zhongjing's Shanghan Lun heart-fullness Xixin Tangs all use it. Like Taiyang syndrome purging, diarrhea unceasing, panting sweating, Gegen Huangqin Huanglian Tang; Taiyang-Shaoyang Yangming syndrome diarrhea, Huangqin Tang; Shaoyang syndrome post-purging, epigastric fullness not painful, Xixin Tang; Shaoyang syndrome Xiaochaihu Tang, originally from Benjing. Later Zhang Yuansu listed nine functions, Li Dongyuan/Zhu Danxi elaborated wonders: Fire calmed Qi peaceful chest/diaphragm smooth, damp removed stagnation transformed intestines通畅, Upper Jiao treated two passages free. Blood closed phlegm condensed, carbuncles vexation, clearing heat澄源 (clearing source). Following momentum, half effort double result, following disease condition, no need for strange things, effect swift, examining cold/heat, cautious giving/taking, thus: Drug precious hitting disease, doctor's treasure. Great heat, Sanhuang (Three Yellows)/Baihu insufficient for violence, why fear Qin alone? Among creeping plants, Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), Gualougen also come from Hongnong, Qin.
