[For strangury (Lin syndrome), wind-dampness, and all kinds of bone and joint pain]
Sangzhi (Ramulus Mori), Huaizhi (Ramulus Sophorae), Chuzhi (Ramulus Broussonetiae), Taozhi (Ramulus Persicae), Liuzhi (Ramulus Salicis) (each 1 liang).
Finely chop each branch. Add one handful of Hemp Leaf (Muye) and three dou of water. Decoct until two dou of liquid remain. Strain the dregs. Use the decoction to wash the affected area. After washing, lie down immediately and avoid exposure to wind.
[For Dry Hongxiangjiao (Dry Beriberi)]
In the second month of the 12th year of Yuanhe, I suffered from dry beriberi. At midnight, qi stagnation occurred with a blockage; a mass like a soybean appeared in the left hypochondrium. Due to severe cold exposure, I fell into unconsciousness for three days, causing my family to wail in grief.
Shanjie (Arborvitae Cippus), Juye (Citrus Reticulatae Folium) (each finely chopped to one dasheng), Dafuzi (Arecae Semen, seven pieces), Tongzi Xiaosui (Urine of an uncircumcised boy, three dasheng).
Decoct these four ingredients together until one dasheng of liquid remains. Divide into two doses. Stop taking when bowel movement becomes smooth and frequent.
Symptoms of dry beriberi include: headache, soreness and pain in the waist and legs, restlessness and oppression in the chest/epigastrium, thirst, immediate vomiting after eating, drinking porridge, or taking medicine, generalized sweating, and panting. These indicate that beriberi pathogen is attacking the heart.
Alternative method: Take fresh pork, remove the fat, wash it with Jiangshui (fermented grain water), press between two boards to extract the juice, and cut finely. Eat with minced garlic. Consume twice daily. This method promotes the downward movement of qi and dispels wind, proving highly effective. This is a foreign method.
[Treating Dry Beriberi as well as retained fluid and phlegm-fluid in the kidneys, bladder]
Take Peach Blossom (Taohua), shade-dried. Measure one zhan (cup). Indicated only for deficiency-type distension and fullness; do not press or rub. Pound into powder. Sift through gauze. Mix with warm wine and take in one dose until fully consumed. Take on an empty stomach. Must avoid Five Pungent Spices (Wuxin).
[Indicated for swollen and painful dry beriberi, panting and urgency, pathogen attacking the heart and abdomen, heat sensation, oppression, nausea/vomiting, inability to eat]
Baifuling (Poria), Zisuye (Perilla Frutescens Folium), Xingren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen), Juapi (Citrus Reticulatae Pericarpium), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) (each 2 liang), Binglang (Arecae Semen, twelve pieces), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 4 liang).
Make into coarse powder. Decoct with eight sheng of water until two sheng and five he remain. Strain. Take warm, divided into three doses. Avoid vinegar and sour foods for the time it takes to walk about eight li after administration.
[Treating warm-dampness and wind-toxin lurking in meridians, causing qi stagnation and blood stasis, resulting in heavy and painful limbs, vexation, high fever, rebellious qi rushing to the heart and abdomen, epigastric fullness, heavy pain in the lower back and spine, pulse difficult to palpate, unceasing pain]
Taohua (Peach Blossom, 7 qian), Ran Yanzhi (Dyed Rouge, 5 qian), Baifuzi (Aconitum Carmerichaelii Radix Preparata), Gansui (Kansui Radix), Tiannanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) (each 2 qian), Damaimian (Hordeum Vulgare Farina, 10 qian), Weilingxian (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma / Dysosma Verrucosa Root - *Note: In Song dynasty texts, Weilingxian often referred to Clematis root or similar, but WHO standard maps to Clematis Radix or similar vine roots depending on specific historical context, here using generic "Weilingxian" or "Clematis Radix"* ) (5 qian).
Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Weigh and use raw. Add drops of water to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 20 pills per dose. First, decoct three cun of Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex) in one large zhan of water, boil for 5-7 times. Remove the bark and discard. Put the pills into the remaining liquid and boil for another 5-7 times. Strain out the pills. Let cool to warm temperature. Take with the decoction after meals and before bedtime. Regular use does not consume qi and blood; it disperses wind and regulates qi.
