Fang to Blacken Beard and Sideburns and Restore Appearance
Human life is primarily governed by Blood and Qi. After the age of forty, Blood and Qi gradually weaken, leading to graying of the beard and sideburns. Formulations for blackening the beard and sideburns often employ coarse and toxic herbs such as Calcined Iron Ore (Duanshi) and Pomegranate Peel (Shiliupi).
Prescription: Dried Cattail Rhizome (Ganpu), Bamboo Shoots from the Previous Year (Sujiangzhu), Star Anise Fruit (Xiangzi), Patchouli Leaf (Huoxiang), Oyster Shell (Muli), High-Quality Ink (Haomo), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng) (each 1 liang).
First, take five walnuts, peel them, and pound into a paste. Then add Almond Oil (Xingren mian you) to achieve an appropriate consistency. Add the aforementioned seven herbs and pound into a paste. Then add the following: Musk (Shexiang), Raw Borneol (Sheng Longnao), and Powdered Labdanum (Linglingxiang mo).
Each of the above three ingredients is 1 qian. Pound over a thousand times more, form into cakes, and store sealed with oil paper.
Herbs to Blacken Beard
Fresh Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit (Xin Zaojiao), Tender Banana Leaves (Nen Bajiaoye), Tender Locust Branches (Nen Huaizhi), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang), Tender Sour Pomegranate Peel (Nen Suan Shiliupi) (all dried in shade).
Equal parts of the above herbs are finely chopped and placed in a jar. Seal the jar mouth with salt mud without covering it. Burn until smoke ceases, preserving the nature of the herbs. Remove the jar from the fire and bury it in a dug pit. Repeat this process three times.
[Method of] Inverting and Hanging (Daoxuan)
Another Prescription
To Blacken Beard and Sideburns
Southern Starch (Nanfen), Red Lead (Huangdan) (each 0.5 fen), Mirabilite (Puxiao) (1 fen), Weathered Calcined Iron Ore (Fenghua Duanshi) (0.5 qian, finely ground).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Mix with the liquid used for making Hu Bing (flatbread) to form a paste. Warm gently in a cup over low fire. When slightly warm, dip a bamboo stick into the medicine and test on a fingernail. The desired effect is indicated by blackening.
Another Prescription
To Blacken Beard
Weathered Calcined Iron Ore (Fenghua Duanshi) (0.5 jin), Black Tin (Heixi), Red Lead (Huangdan), Southern Starch (Nanfen) (each 2 liang).
In an iron pot, first roast the Calcined Iron Ore. Stir with a branch of Star Anise wood (1 chi 5 cun long, 1 cun diameter). Roast until the branch chars back 4 cun. Then sequentially add Black Tin, Red Lead, and Southern Starch.
Another Prescription
To Blacken Beard
Cinnabar (Sha) (1 liang), Iron Powder (Tiefen) (4 liang), Green Walnut Peel (Qing Hetaopi) (0.5 jin), Sour Pomegranate (large one).
First, pound the pomegranate and walnut peel together into a mud-like paste. Decoct the medicine. Place everything in a jar, seal with oiled cloth, and bury in horse manure for 49 days. Take out and use with human hair (text implies mixing or application with hair).

First, burn the first four ingredients to preserve their nature. Then add the remaining herbs and grind extremely fine. Boil Lettuce (Woju) in water to wash the feet. Have a person with clear vision trim the ingrown toenail spike. Apply the medicine paste. Change once every day and night.
Another Prescription
Wrap Fructus Chebulae (Hezi) in flour and roast. Remove the kernel. Pound the peel into a fine powder. Apply dry powder to the sore. Wrap with paper. Pain will cease naturally.
Another Prescription
Chicken Dropping Alum (Jisifen) [ground fine after burning in crucible, stored in box], Frankincense (Ruxiang) (2 fen), Musk (Shexiang) (0.5 fen).
Mix the three ingredients evenly and store in a box. Before use, moisten the swollen and painful ingrown nail area with saliva. Sprinkle the medicine on top. Once dry, peel off. Repeat three times until cured.
