Seven-Return Elixir
Subtle Secrets

First Transformation: Cinnabar to Mercury
Take Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*) and Huangfan (Yellow Alum, *Alumen Flavum*, sourced from Guazhou, five liang each). First grind the Zhusha into a fine powder, mix with Huangfan, and grind together finely. Then place it in a furnace, using Liuyi Mud (Six-One Mud, a sealing paste) to coat the outside of the bottle for sealing. Open to inspect; the transformation has occurred.

Second Turn (Transforming Zhu-Mercury into Cinnabar)
Take approximately three liang or more of the previously refined Zhu-Mercury (Mercury-Cinnabar amalgam), add one liang of Shuiyin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*), and one liang of Huhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*). First, grind the Huhuang into a fine powder, place it in a bowl, and melt it over fire into a liquid, known as "Huangye" (Yellow Liquid). Observe until the medicinal properties are fully melted.

Third Turn (Transforming Cinnabar back to Mercury)
Take three liang of the previously prepared Lingsha (Spirit Sand, a mercury-sulfur compound), add three liang of raw Zhusha (Cinnabar), mix equally, and grind together. Stir-fry five liang of Huangfan according to previous methods, mix finely with the two substances, place in a furnace, and seal the bottle exterior with Liuyi Mud. Once dry, it transforms back into mercury.

Fourth Turn (Transforming 'Nu' into 'Zhu'er')
Take the previously refined substance, weigh if five liang, add one liang of raw mercury (Shenghong) and one liang of sulfur. Follow the previous two steps, grind finely in a bowl, melt over fire into liquid, then投 (throw/add) two [steps/substances], transforming into [a specific state].

Fifth Turn (Yin-Fixation Method using Medicinal Paste)
Take five liang of the previously calcined Liuzhu (Sulfur Beads) and Dansha (Cinnabar), along with Banliang of Qingceng (Chalcanthite, *Chalcanthitum*), Banliang of Xionghuang (Realgar, *Realgar*), one liang of Huhuang (Sulfur), and one liang of Huangfan. All above medicines must be ground as fine as powder. Use three medicinal ingredients: Sandou of Sangchaihui (Mulberry Firewood Ash, *Cinis Ramuli Mori*), selected from the best mulberry wood harvested in the second lunar month, burned to ash, and leached to obtain three dou of juice; Wudou of Micu (Rice Vinegar, *Acetum Oryzae*); and Wusheng of Huating Yanzhi (Huating Salt Juice, *Salsae Aqua*). Mix rice vinegar, medicinal ash, etc., and process day and night.

Sixth Turn (Preparing Liuyi Mud Bottle According to Previous Method)
Take the Yin-fixed sand from the fifth turn, place it into the Liuyi Mud bottle, seal and fix it according to method, and calcine for a while. After cooling and opening, the medicine forms a single mass, named Wuxing Zhenqian (Five Elements True Lead).

Seventh Turn (Forming Zijinsha - Purple Gold Sand)
Grind the previous Wuxing Zhenqian into a fine powder, add one and a half liang of raw mercury, and grind together with the true lead for over thirty strokes until it becomes sand-like. Wrap in white paper, place into the Liuyi Mud bottle. [After cooling], open to inspect; the sand is [complete]. Then [proceed].

When first taking the elixir, one must first establish an altar and observe a pure fast for twenty-one days (three sevens), without leaving the altar area. The medicine must not be seen by impurities, mourners, or women. Take three pills on an empty stomach at dawn, swallowed with liquid, facing east, reciting "Baoming Tianzun" (Heavenly Venerable One Who Protects Life) one hundred and twenty times. After ten days of such administration, [illness] will not attach. By continuing this daily for three years, one can transform the bone marrow, bones, hair, blood, and flesh. Retain this; non-humans may fear leaking immortal secrets. It is warned to use Fuhuo Yan (Fire-Vanquishing Salt) for the preceding cinnabar.

Song Says:
No need to toil seeking immortality elsewhere;
The ladder to the blue sky lies before your eyes.
Once effective in the tripod and pot to extend sun and moon,
Yet leaving the chapter on fire control deeply belonging to the jade-pendant guest of Yao Terrace returning to the elixir.
Do not casually transmit the sequel; Mr. Dou wrote and presented the Tang Minghuang Song Secrets.

First: Cinnabar Transformed to Mercury
Yan Sao Cheng En Chong, burning elixirs in the forbidden curtains.
In the cauldron all medicines transform; in the furnace mercury flies.
Wall-closing autumn frost color; light soaring night sun brilliance.
All due to the bright sovereign's influence, enabling the Dao's subtlety.

Second: Transforming Zhu-Mercury Back to Cinnabar
Again take the extracted mercury, re-burn, and return it to make cinnabar, the secret of the upper immortals.
The essence of palace medicines contains purple qi true color; vermilion light mixes with morning clouds.
To merge into one body, one must transform the fierce three flowers.

Third: Extracting Lingsha to 'Nu'
Turns upon turns exhaust the subtle and mysterious; layers enter the profound darkness.
Still using the wonderful body of medicine, yet transforming into the form of mercury.
Qi combines with autumn frost purity; vermilion divides like falling stars at night.
Naturally becoming 'Nu', where is there no spirit?

Fourth: Coagulating Mercury to Transform into Chi Di Nan Jing (Red Emperor Male Crystal)
Although jade liquid is initially transformed, yellow flower preparation has already congealed.
Light like snow under heaven; shadow like formed water shape.
Sand and earth dry like sifted roasted ash; wet mixing steaming requires watching qi color, waiting further for brine salt clarification.

Fifth: Making It Hard
Civil and martial long adjust the fire; yin and yang settle in the furnace cauldron.
Watch qi color determined in the pot; dog runs heavy pavilion cultivating wind protection.
Six medicines mud already hard like joined walls; where to seek sulfur and cinnabar?

Seventh: Vanquishing Mercury to Become Gold
Stop fire, open the elixir stove; gold formed, remove medicinal mud.
Auspicious light connects sun and moon; true qi mixes with rainbow clouds.
Shape surpasses adding gold tripod; essence heads toward horse hoof.
Still require nine turns completed; look to take one dao gui (unit of measure).

Eighth: Transforming Gold to Powder
Powder initially ground and refined; approaching the furnace, definitely seek storage.
Like dust startling half-purple; like face KT golden auspiciousness.
Making three stalk ears spirit; containing five colors light.
Wait until gold poison is exhausted, then present beside the jade steps.

Ninth Turn: Forming Golden Elixir
Jade law spring arrives early; golden elixir emperor feels formation.
Southern mountain same as sage longevity; East sea at this time clear.
Supreme fortune Xuan Yuan descends; merit comes from the profound Dao.
Though humble minister has technique, immortal affairs await in the garden pillars.

Immortal Wang Zhenjun Finishes Refining Seven-Return Cinnabar Elixir Administration Longevity Secret Seal Fixing Mud
Earthworm feces (*Feces Lumbrici*), Oyster shell (*Concha Ostreae*), Hematite (*Haematitum*), Yellow Dan (*Minium*), Salt (*Sal*), Red Stone Lip (*Lapis Kaolinis Ruber*).
Above ingredients equal parts, soil-packed, or add sheep/rabbit hair, tangled silk, paper fibers, pound thirty-plus times.

Method for Combining and Burning Cinnabar
First stir-fry sulfur and mercury, grind to fine powder, put into the combination vessel, line bottom with one liang of paper in layers, cover with another liang of paper, then cover with talcum powder to fill solidly, seal fix, ash embrace, black grind, water and fire both complete. (Figure see P369)
Ji Ding Style
Above tripod cast, then burn red-hot again on the furnace.

Fire-Vanquished Golden Fluid Elixir
Sulfur four liang, Mugwort ash one jin, grind together as powder, fill combination vessel solidly, seal with salt mud finger-thick, wait dry, cover thickly with vinegar ash mound three cun, one sheng or ten jin seven jin develop it, boil, advance gradually.

Cinnabar Method
Dan (Use one liang of Zhusha as standard, must use block form with walls, not mixed with stone, clean and bright is good), Tian Nan Xing (*Arisaema Rhizoma*), Cao Wu Tou (*Aconitum Radix Kusnezoffii*), Xi Xin (*Asari Radix et Rhizoma*), Rou Gui (*Cinnamomi Cortex*), Chuan Jiao (*Zanthoxyli Pericarpium*).
Use ten Jin Zao (Jujube, *Ziziphi Fructus*), soak in water (no limit on days, until soft and permeated is excellent), mix with above medicines, pound in mortar like mud, if hard add little water is fine, wait until appropriate, divide into, penetrate dry.
Mercury Pill Walnut Size Use.

Six-Jia Divine Elixir (Especially suitable for women before and after childbirth)
Xionghuang (Realgar, *Realgar*) nine liang, water-ground is best, or ground is also acceptable, must select bright and translucent. Put into a sand combination vessel, level and solid, add six liang of honey to soak and cover the Xionghuang, wait for mud one chi five jin, make five turns of burning and examining, nourish for one fu period (must continuously add charcoal to keep fire energy even; if less charcoal add more, do not exceed). Take out, break vessel, green color is best, purple-red next, one pill (make some smaller ones for children).

Dongyang Golden Elixir Method
Good Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*) four liang, Wood charcoal thirty jin, if charcoal soft add five jin more, Yellow earth six jin, add three liang of salt, several sheets of old paper, mix with clean water to make cooked mud, large straight sweet pot hang down half waist overnight take.

Fire-Vanquished Cinnabar Method
Bright Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*) four liang in blocks, use a rafter-head combination vessel, first put orange leaves to line one layer, scoop one spoon of honey on top, then put Zhusha inside, then put orange leaves again intend pill Zhengyi Dan Method.

Also says Laifu Dan (Returning Elixir), ascending and descending yin and yang, supplementing righteous qi tight medicine, attacking the stagnation that cannot be attacked, breaking the yin qi that cannot be broken, restoring the yang qi that cannot be restored, generating escape diarrhea, entering abdomen bleeding extending or forming stagnation, take it to regulate, take it Shen hour use this.
Sulfur (two and a half liang ground three days), Niter (one liang two qian ground one day), Xuanjing Shi (One and a half liang ground extremely fine, three flavors rolled together ground evenly fire melt scale).

Sulfur (three liang), Niter (one and a half liang), Xuanjing Shi (one and a half liang), Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung, *Faex Trogopterori*) (five and a half liang), Qingpi (Citrus Peel Unripe, *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride*), Chenpi (Citrus Peel Ripe, *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium*) (each one and a half liang).
Start of Autumn July solar term, yang begins to descend, yin begins to rise, yang qi not yet strong, can decrease sulfur by one-third according to Summer Solstice method to preserve its yin.
Autumn Equinox mid-August, yang descends middle yin rises, middle yin advances yang retreats, should use this method.
Sulfur (two and a half liang), Niter (one liang), Xuanjing Shi (one and a half liang, three flavors according to previous method half raw half cooked), Wulingzhi (five liang), Chenpi.
Start of Winter October solar term, yang retreats completely, yin governs alone, can decrease niter by one-third according to Autumn Equinox method to assist true yang.
Winter Solstice yang descends to extreme, yin rises to extreme, one yang begins to move, should use this method.
Sulfur (two liang), Niter (one and a half liang), Xuanjing Shi (one and a half liang, three flavors according to previous method grind not melt), Wulingzhi (four liang), Chenpi (two).
Start of Spring January solar term, yang begins to rise, yin begins to descend, yang qi not yet strong, can decrease niter by one-third according to this Winter Solstice method to preserve its yang.
Above medicines take latter three flavors as fine powder, roll grind evenly with three items, water-soak steamed cake into pills walnut size, Water transport excessive fire insufficient add refined Zhusha one Earth insufficient.

Solidify Middle Lower Benefit Spleen Stomach Great Effect Honey-Boiled Cinnabar Decoction Pills

Refine Taiyi Divine Elixir Secret Recipe
Above use Danshen (*Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*) not limited amount, use this medicine to pave crucible bottom, next put Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*) four liang or two liang, more is also fine, inside crucible upper cover head thicker than bottom pave take out crucible inside Chen Kong.
Men and women original organ deficiency cold, each take one pill salt soup down, if major deficiency fatigue cold damage use mugwort soup down, women blood labor not think eat salt soup down, cold injury knot.

Treat Childbirth Difficulty Slip Fetal Elixir
Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*) one liang, block form.
Above from Dragon Boat Festival sun-dry to one hundred days, must not touch rain, if full one hundred days take grind as powder, use December rabbit brain marrow and pill like mung bean size, want feel movement still with Xionghuang Dan.

Benefit sinews and marrow, extend years stay color, strengthen ambition qi, long take can have no disease, body light bones healthy, ears and eyes bright, its merit difficult to fully record.
Xionghuang (Realgar, *Realgar*), Cishi (Magnetite, *Magnetitum*), Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*), Huhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*) (each two liang), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, *Calculus Bos taurus*) (one liang fine grind), Shexiang (Moschus, *Moschus*) (half liang fine grind).
Above medicines front four flavors each in mortar fine grind, water fly pass into clean vessel store. Want to repair combine, must May Fifth Day collect green mugwort tender about one part make paste sulfur warm wine down.

Tongling Jade Powder Elixir
Treat waist and knees warm Water Organ, benefit color, its merit cannot be fully recorded.
Sulfur (half jin).
Above use mulberry firewood ash five dou leach get juice, boil three fu periods, often use iron spoon scoop on fire test, wait vanquish fire then stop, wait dry use fire of, if not vanquish more boil on Huang Yu pill.

Zhusha Dan
Treat hundred diseases, benefit five zang organs, calm soul determine spirit, nourish heart benefit qi, please luster color, long take light body not age, extend years grow muscle, benefit Dantian, brighten ears and eyes, very many.
Chenjin Sha (Vermilion Brocade Sand, *Cinnabaris*) (ten liang).
Use above white sand honey ten jin, refine let remove all white foam, use long neck urn one piece, store above honey, its Zhusha use double raw silk bag hold, tie thread suspend new brick. Must use east flowing river water, civil and martial fire day and night unceasingly boil seven fu periods, beside separately mud one small pot separately boil water also unceasingly, always let water hot, wait medicine cauldron inside water consume then continuously add this hot water, long let urn water reach seven-eight parts since boil, boil seven fu periods finish, wait stove self-cool, take this Zhusha clean wash let dry, grind three fu periods, use glutinous rice flour and pill like yellow millet size, daily empty stomach with warm wine down five pills or three pills, regardless of old young all suitable take. Boil refine this medicine time forbid women chickens dogs see it, this medicine divine merit divine effect cannot measure also, forbid sheep blood salt water.

Yuzhi Dan
Treat all wind diseases and women blood qi.
Heiqian (Black Lead, *Plumbum*), Shuiyin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*) (each one liang), Huhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*) (one large bean size), Yangqishi (Stibnite, *Stibnitum*), Daizheshi (Hematite, *Haematitum*) (each three large bean sizes), Xiaoshi (Niter, *Natrii Sulfas*) (half fen).
Above first melt lead become liquid, next put mercury, quick hand stir let even, then put all medicines bite lead below four flavors together fine grind then continuously take point into lead middle熟 stir, rotate sulfur Huang Dangzi teacup red then medicine wine down five pills.

Zifen Lingbao Dan
Treat sinew bone wind qi, add essence benefit marrow, spirit qi fresh clear, good color red please, long take light healthy, benefit warm Water Organ.
Heiqian (Black Lead, *Plumbum*) (four liang), Shuiyin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*) (two liang, not separately prepare immediately same method as above Yuzhi Dan, for every three liang mercury add half liang sulfur bind into sand particles fine grind).
Above take vanquished fire niter in cauldron center make one pile, pointed install, pile four sides flow down some bits, let cover cauldron bottom, then take sand particles powder finely sprinkle on pile like method to four boil medicine.

Baijin Dan
Treat all wind hemiplegia mouth not converging and half body paralysis.
Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*) (three liang separately grind to powder), Xionghuang (Realgar, *Realgar*) (one and a half liang), Huhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*) (one liang).
Above two huangs together grind to powder, first in cauldron melt become liquid, next put Zhusha powder stir let even, then use mulberry ash juice boil three days three nights, continuously add warm ash day tripod like green.

Qingjin Dan
Treat all wind cold blood qi.
Shuiyin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*), Huhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*), Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*), Huangdan (Minium, *Minium*), Qianfen (Lead White, *Plumbi Carbonas Subbasicus*) (each one liang).
Above medicines in yao vessel inside first put Huhuang melt become liquid, then put Zhusha Shuiyin bind into sand particles, wait cool put Huangdan Qianfen together grind fine, enter one porcelain gourd spread on want out.

Vanquished Fire Mercury Sulfur Zifen Dan
Treat all cold qi reverse stomach vomit food, cold hot blood qi, cold labor intestinal wind, all cold diseases divine effect (Revised this formula fire only possible).
Huhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*) (six liang), Shuiyin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*) (two and a half liang), Zhensha (Needle Sand, *Ferrum*), Taiyin Xuanjing (Taiyin Black Crystal, *Gypsum Fibrosum Nigrum*) (grind enter each two liang).
Above medicines first fine grind Huhuang, next put Shuiyin, add little hot water grind like mud, wait mercury stars break, then enter tripod together Xuanjing Zhensha, use water boil seven days seven nights fix of let not rice meal.

Ziling Dan
Treat all cold qi, digest food break women old blood, cold diseases divine effect.
Huhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*) (eight liang ship-up ones fine grind), Baiyanhua (White Salt Flower, *Sal*) (three jin, one jin half white use one jin half with rice vinegar three sheng mix expose dry of).
Above medicines use one tripod, first build Baiyan let solid, center dig make pit, enter Huhuang powder finished, then use rice vinegar mix salt cover it, also solid build, then again Baiyan put cold salt water.

Si Bi Gui Zhusha Method
Can remove wind cold, warm marrow bones, please luster color, long take no disease extend years benefit life.
Zhensha (Needle Sand, *Ferrum*) (two jin), Huhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*) (four liang), Misha (Rice Sand, *Cinnabaris*), Baifan (White Alum, *Alumen*) (four liang), Yan (Salt, *Sal*) (one liang).
Above first with strong vinegar one dou five sheng boil Zhensha Huhuang two flavors let dry, use fire of, wait ghost flame out completely then put cold, again grind separately enter Huhuang two liang, again use vinegar one dou five sheng more boil, wait dry according to previous of, ghost flame尽 then stop, put cold use water wash out, take purple juice remove its Zhensha, clarify purple juice extremely clear remove its Ai Gui then change thin spread with copper.

Taiyang Zifen Dan
Treat men long cold, women blood qi cold labor, five diaphragm qi, reverse stomach Pi, all cold diseases none not heal.
Huhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*), Mayaxiao (Marine Niter, *Natrii Nitras*), Shuiyin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*) (each three liang).
Above medicines with non-ash wine continuously point in mortar together grind, wait mercury stars finish then stop, sun dry, spread in cauldron inside bowl combine, with salt mud like method fix weep on cold person.

Qinghua Dan
Treat cholera belly distension, cold qi heart pain, intestinal wind blood qi deficiency cold disease, children gan chronic divine effect (Revised this formula peach blossom one flavor very unreasonable, suspect Red Stone Lip).
Kongqing (Azurite, *Azuritum*), Dingfen (Basic Bismuth Carbonate, *Bismuthi Carbonas Subbasicus*), Baishizhi (White Kaolin, *Lapis Kaolinis Albus*), Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*), Taohua (Peach Blossom, *Flos Persicae*) (each one liang), Yanhua (Salt Flower, *Sal*) (four liang).
Above medicines together grind like flour, enter bottle, cover with salt, seal fix, wait dry, use two jin fire on bottle four sides force it, wait ripe four sides attach one sheng fire gradually child big.

Taiyang Liuzhu Dan
Treat all wind cold wind qi Pi lump formation, women blood qi red white discharge, intestinal wind lower blood, many years qi利 Pi, often vomit clear water and divine effect.
Huhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*) (one jin), Mayaxiao (Marine Niter, *Natrii Nitras*), Yanhua (Salt Flower, *Sal*) (stir-fry let change color each four liang), Sha (Sand, *Cinnabaris*) (two liang vanquished fire).
Above medicines together grind like flour, enter bottle press solid, upper more with stir-fried salt cover, exit yin qi, like method seal fix, will enter one tripod, under first melt lead half jin, altar medicine bottle tripod separate bean big.

Silin Dan
Stay face benefit.
Huangdan (Minium, *Minium*), Shuiyin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*), Gangtie (Steel Iron, *Ferrum*), Sha (Sand, *Cinnabaris*) (each two liang).
Above medicines fine grind, enter combination vessel, seal fix let dry, place in ash furnace, cover ash thick three cun, often use one jin fire nourish one hundred days, day enough with ten jin fire Ren Zi Big.

Silin Dan
Treat sinew bone wind, angular bow wind, kidney organ wind, heat poison wind, skin wind, great wind, feel jue wind, all treat it, its effect like divine.
Sha (Sand, *Cinnabaris*) (three liang), Shuiyin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*) (one liang), Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*) (one liang), Huhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*) (three liang).
Above medicines take Sha Huhuang together grind like flour, in combination vessel hold it, like method seal fix let dry, enter ash furnace, above ash thick three cun, with fire three liang nourish one day open poison used.

Vanquished Fire Xuanshi Gui Lingsha Dan
Benefit sinew bone, stay face color, treat women wind cold, warm uterus, long take not age extend years.
Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*) (three liang fine grind paper wrap), Ci (Magnetite, *Magnetitum*) (one jin half crush fine grind, wash away red juice finish).
Above use Shinao Oil (Camphor Oil, *Oleum Camphorae*) twelve liang mix Cishi let weep weep enter, first seal fix one bottle let dry, enter Cishi half in bottle inside build let solid, center dig wait bottle use ginger three pills forbid.

Jinye Hanhua Ling Dan
Benefit extend years, reverse old, merit cannot be fully recorded.
Shanze Yinmo (Mountain Marsh Silver Powder, *Argentum*), Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*) (two liang five metals juice soak five days finished, each block use gold foil wrap two layers).
Above first spread Yinmo one liang in combination vessel, then arrange Zhusha blocks, do not let touch, above use Yinmo cover let even, again spread Zhusha blocks, then again Yinmo cover nourish two big coin god.

Han Hua Zhusha Dan
