To treat epistaxis (nosebleed) with a pale and lusterless complexion:
Sheng Gan Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, half liang), Chi Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Hosta Root, each three qian), Bai Ye (Cacumen Platycladi, one liang), E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, each half liang).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. For administration, take two qian of the powder and mix it with Huang Tang (Yellow Soup/Decoction) to drink; or, first hold a mouthful of water in the mouth, close the eyes, insufflate the powder into the nasal cavity, and then spit out the clear water to stop the bleeding. This method is miraculous.
To treat hematochezia (blood in stool) and simultaneous bleeding from the mouth and nose, with blood rushing up to the chest and heart causing shortness of breath. This is caused by Lao Re (deficiency heat due to overwork):
Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens), Pu Huang (Pollen Typhae), Di Gu Pi (Cortex Lycii), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae), Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae), Sheng Zhu Ru (Spiritus Bambusae in Taenia Recens, each three liang).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take two qian per dose, decoct with one zhan of water until reduced to six parts, remove the dregs, and take warm after meals.
To treat persistent epistaxis. This is caused by Yang Du (yang toxin) injuring the Lung:
E Jiao (Colla Corri Asini), Fu Long Gan (Caulis Argillae Ustae), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae), Di Gu Pi (Cortex Lycii), Cong Bai Lian Xu (Bulbus Allii Cepae cum Radice et Stipula, two stems), Chi (Folium Sojae Preparatum, one he).
(Note: The revised edition specifies that four ingredients in this formula have no specified dosage; the text "qi wei ban" appears to be a textual corruption or refers to unspecified proportions for these specific items.)
Chop the ingredients evenly. Decoct with one and a half zhan of water until reduced to one zhan. Remove the dregs, add Er He of Sheng Di Huang Zhi (Juice of Radix Rehmanniae Recens), stir well, and divide into three warm doses. Take at any time.
To treat conditions with insufficient blood and excessive qi, body heat, emaciation, and thinness:
Lu Jiao Jiao (Colla Cornus Cervi, one liang), Ru Zhi (Milk, one sheng), Su You (Butyrum/Bovine Butter), Mi (Mel/Honey), Jiang Zhi (Jucius Zingiberis Recens, each one liang).
First, boil the milk in a vessel. Then add Lu Jiao Jiao until melted. Subsequently add Su You and other ingredients. Simmer slowly over low heat for seven or eight boils. Pour into a container to solidify. Cut with a bamboo knife and ingest. Take half a spoonful washed down with hot water after meals.
Mainly treats Pi Qi Bu Zu (Spleen Qi deficiency), lower jiao xu leng (cold deficiency of the lower burner), fullness and obstruction in the chest and diaphragm, sweating, distension and fullness under the ribs, hematemesis (vomiting blood), and hematochezia:
Shu Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, three liang), Huang Qi (Radix Astragali), Gui Zhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, each one liang).
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Take two qian per dose, decoct with water and a small amount of wine until reduced to six parts. Remove the dregs and take warm.
To treat Chang Feng Xia Xue (intestinal wind causing bloody stool):
Huai Hua (Flos Sophorae), Pu Huang (Pollen Typhae), Di Yu (Radix Sanguisorbae), Juan Bai (Herba Siegesbeckiae), Gan Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum, each half liang except Gan Jiang which is one fen).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take one qian per dose, decoct with one zhan of water for several boils. Take at any time without restriction.
To treat various old and new diseases, loss of blood from all causes, alternating chills and fever, unknown location of pain, palpitations, trance-like states, drowsiness resembling drunkenness, mottled skin, insanity resembling loss of mind, facial swelling, chest oppression, Shi Zhu (corpse infection/chronic wasting disease), and Qi Pi (qi stagnation lump):
Zi Tan (Lignum Aquilariae Resinatum; if unavailable, use Qing Mu Xiang / Radix Aucklandiae), Qian Gen (Radix Rubiae Cordifoliae), Yu Jin (Rhizoma Curcumae Longae), Huang Bo (Cortex Phellodendri), Hu Jiao (Fructus Piperis Nigrum, each one liang).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with a paste made from boiling wheat flour in water. Form pills the size of a wu zi (smartweed seed). Take one pill per dose, washed down with mi yin (rice water). Take at any time.
