Treatment for all types of bleeding:
Radix Isatidis (Lan Gen, 蓝根) (one tael), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen, 人参) (half a tael).
Finely cut the herbs. For each dose, take two qian, add one da zhen of water, decoct until six fen remains, remove the dregs, and take warm after meals.
Treatment for hematemesis (vomiting blood), hemoptysis (coughing up blood), and coughing with blood:
Real Aster Tataricus Root (Zi Wan, 紫菀), Madder Root (Qian Cao Gen, 茜根).
Grind the equal parts into fine powder. Mix with refined honey to make pills the size of cherry seeds. Contain one pill in the mouth and dissolve it at any time.
Treatment for continuous lower bleeding due to deficiency-cold:
Calculated Iron Ore (Duan Shi, 锻石) (stir-fried until red), Sulfur (Liu Huang, 硫黄).
Grind the equal parts into fine powder. Boil wheat paste in water and mix to form pills the size of sophora seeds. Take thirty pills per dose with rice water on an empty stomach. (Another prescription uses white flour instead of sulfur.)
For conditions that cannot be easily cured or stopped (refractory bleeding):
Large Thorn Thistle (Da Ci Ji, 大刺蓟) (one tael), Ormosia Seeds (Xiang Si Zi, 相思子) (half a tael).
Grind into fine powder. For each dose, take one-tenth part, add one zhan of water, decoct until seven fen remains, remove the dregs, and take warm at any time.
Treatment for coughing with blood in patients who have taken mineral stones (Shi Yao, 石药):
Glutinous Rice (Nuo Mi, 糯米), White Beeswax (Bai La, 白蜡) (size of a bullet).
Place one green bamboo tube, add one sheng of water, put in the glutinous rice and beeswax, seal the mouth tightly, and cook thoroughly in a double boiler (hot water bath). Eat while slightly warm as desired.
Treatment for epistaxis (nosebleed) in men, women, and children:
Sichuan Lovage Rhizome (Chuan Xiong, 川芎) (one tael), Licorice Root (Gan Cao, 甘草) (one fen).
Grind into fine powder. Take half a qian per dose, decoct in water, and drink hot. Can be taken at any time.
Treatment for epistaxis:
Pollen Typhae (Pu Huang, 蒲黄), Fossilized Bones and Wood (Long Gu, 龙骨) (equal parts).
Grind into fine powder and insufflate dry powder into the nose.
Barley (Da Mai, 大麦), Bamboo Leaves (Zhu Ye, 竹叶) (equal parts).
Grind into fine or coarse powder, or do not grind; decoct together and take warm at any time.
Treatment for hematemesis due to upper jiao heat:
Concha Meretricis (Ge Fen, 蛤粉) (four taels), Cinnabar (Zhu Sha, 朱砂) (one tael).
Grind into fine powder. Take one qian per dose, mixed with newly drawn cold water.
Treatment for blood masses (Xue Jia, 血瘕) with hard and distended abdomen, dysentery, and emaciation:
Achyranthes Bidentata Root (Niu Xi, 牛膝) (four taels, soaked in wine overnight, dried and ground), Dry Lacquer (Gan Qi, 干漆) (half a tael, crushed and stir-fried until smoke appears).
Grind into fine powder. Use wine-boiled wheat paste to make pills the size of sophora seeds. Take five pills per dose with rice water on an empty stomach, two to three times daily.
Treatment for hematemesis and lower bleeding:
Take fresh Cupressus Leaf (Bai Ye, 柏叶) (remove woody parts, use only leaves; avoid those from graves, those from temples are best), three jin, wash with clear water, drain, and pound in a wooden or stone mortar.
