The taboos for treating measles must be strictly guarded against. Meat, saltiness, pungency, and sourness should not be tasted. Restraint of desires is a blessing; foods that are overly palatable (violating taboos) will surely bring disaster.
During the course of measles, meat, fish, and chicken are contraindicated. One may only consume these after forty-nine days (seven sevens) from the onset. Salt, vinegar, and the "Five Pungents" (Wu Xin: five types of pungent vegetables such as garlic, scallions, etc.) are all prohibited. One must adhere to a bland diet to avoid misfortune.
The dietary restrictions for measles are even stricter than those for smallpox. For smallpox, caution in diet is advised during the initial stage; when pustules begin to form, consuming chicken can help assist in the formation of pus. However, for measles, meats such as horse, cow, pig, sheep, goose, duck, and fishy flavors, as well as salt, vinegar, sweet substances, wheat flour products, the Five Pungents, qi-stagnating foods, and fried or roasted items, must only be consumed after forty-nine days following the complete resolution of the rash. Only a bland diet is suitable to prevent future complications. If one ignores these taboos before the forty-nine-day period, whenever an epidemic pathogen is encountered in the future, measles will inevitably recur. Even if it does not recur, there will still be lingering adverse effects. Consuming salt too early causes coughing; consuming the Five Pungents too early generates fright-heat; consuming meat and fish too early leads to bizarre pathological manifestations. Therefore, from the time the measles rash resolves, one should observe dietary caution for forty-nine days. Among meats, pork is the only one that may be eaten earlier, but only after the body temperature has normalized, coughing has ceased, and no other complications have arisen. All other foods must be strictly avoided until the prescribed time. This caution applies not only to the patient but also to the infant and the nursing mother. Since measles resembles cold damage (Shanghan), negligence regarding meat and fish can lead to unpredictable disasters.
A recorded case states: He Shaojun suffered from measles. His family members, unaware of the taboos, fed him rice with meat. Miao Zhongchun happened to arrive, saw this, and exclaimed in shock, "Your master has measles, which is a severe type of the disease. How can he eat meat?" He urgently prepared three doses of Menghu Tang (Bumblebee and Tiger Decoction) for the patient to take. Consequently, the measles fully erupted, turning the entire body red. Two more doses of the original formula were administered. Although the measles fully erupted, the patient remained restless and irritable, and the condition was precarious. Then, a large dose of Sanhuang Shigao Jia Chengye Tang (Three Yellows Gypsum Decoction plus Tamarisk Leaf Decoction) was decocted strongly and given to the patient. The restlessness subsided, and he recovered. The harm caused by indulging one's appetite is significant; how can one not be cautious?
Zhu stated: Regarding this clause on dietary taboos, the patient's family must especially comply. I have seen children who like salty foods develop asthma syndromes, and those who like sweet foods develop dental caries. Indulging momentarily brings harm for a lifetime; this is the responsibility of the parents.
