If one desires to fill the Lung Qi, the key lies in regulating respiration.
Do not experience severe panting; strictly avoid excessive speech. If breathing is rapid and wheezing, or if there is excessive talking, as well as consuming cold and raw foods, these should be reduced and are major taboos. One must also avoid sorrow.
Anger, joy, and cold damage the Shen (Spirit) of the Lung.
Furthermore, if there is a loss of control in the Earthly Branches during the Gui-Hai year of the Jia-Zi cycle, this constitutes a loss of the soft (Yin) position, meaning the upper part has lost its firm (Yang) support. This is also called "Wu and Gui do not combine in virtue." After three years following the deficiency of both the Movement (Yun) and the Earth (Di), a pestilence will transform, named Fire Pestilence (Huo Li).
This epidemic is identical; the acupuncture method is unified. All Wu and Gui years, upper and lower, belong to the same system.
Therefore, establishing a five-year cycle on the ground clarifies the loss of control. Using dampness methods for acupuncture, the epidemics and pestilences become names of upper and lower firmness and softness, ultimately returning to one system. That is, the methods for treating epidemics only have five approaches, summarizing the loss of control of all positions, thus returning to the Five Elements to govern them.
These are all the Five Epidemic Pestilences, arising from the disharmony between Heaven and Earth, transforming into epidemics that severely harm human life. Thus, understanding the Heavenly Origin allows one to master acupuncture laws to save the people.
The Yellow Emperor said: I have heard that when the Five Epidemics arrive, they infect each other regardless of age, and the symptoms are similar. In rescue and treatment, how can one avoid mutual transmission? How can one prevent infection when the disease is contagious?
Qi Bo said: Those who are not infected have Righteous Qi (Zheng Qi) stored within, so Evil Qi cannot interfere. They avoid the toxic vapors. The Tian Pin (nose) is the source of entry; restoring its normal flow...
If Evil Toxic Qi enters through sweating and is mistakenly treated with purgation, the Qi enters the body causing toxicity. The toxic vapor reaches the brain, flows into the meridians, and causes infection in others. For example, when a person sneezes and inhales this Qi, it enters the nose and reaches the brain. To prevent it from entering the nose, induce sneezing so that it is expelled. In this way, one will not be infected.
When Qi issues from the brain, it is not disturbed by Evil.
Evil Qi enters through the nose to the brain; if it wants to invade and then exit, there will be no mutual infection.
When Qi issues from the brain, one should first quiet the room and visualize the heart like the sun.
This means Righteous Qi is present internally, and the Shen guards its root, so the epidemic Qi does not invade.
Like the verdant green of cypress trees in spring.
Next, visualize red Qi issuing from the heart, traveling south and upward, transforming into bright flames like intense heat and dryness.
Next, visualize yellow Qi issuing from the spleen, residing in the center, transforming into earth-like yellow.
After completing the protection of the Five Qi, visualize the brilliance of the Big Dipper above the head, and only then can one enter the epidemic room.
Another method is on the day of the Spring Equinox, before sunrise, decocting Polygalae Radix (Yuanshi, 远志) without the heart core in water and drinking two cups; the vomitus will contain no epidemic Qi.
Another method is after the Rain Water solar term, taking three medicinal baths to induce sweating. If the sweat is profuse and foul-smelling, there is no epidemic.
Another method is the Small Golden Pill Formula: Cinnabar (Chensha, 辰砂) two liang, Arsenic Ore (Xionghuang, 雄黄) one liang ground in water, Realgar (Cihuang, 雌黄) one liang leaves, and Purple Gold (Zijin, 紫金) half a liang. Grind into fine powder, mix together, place in a capsule, seal externally, bury one chi deep in the ground, compact the soil firmly. Do not use a furnace; no drug processing is needed. Burn twenty jin of fire. Maintain the fire at twenty jin daily.
After seven days, wait for seven more days to cool, then retrieve. Choose an auspicious day to open the capsule and bury the medicine in the ground for another seven days; an auspicious location is best.
Retrieve and grind along the direction of the sun's movement for three days. Refine white sand honey into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Every day, face east, inhale one mouthful of solar Qi, swallow one pill with ice water, harmonizing the Qi. Taking ten pills prevents epidemic invasion.
The Yellow Emperor asked: When human Qi is deficient, the Shen wanders and loses its position, allowing ghosts and spirits to invade externally, leading to premature death. How can the True Yuan be preserved? I wish to hear the acupuncture methods.
Qi Bo bowed twice and said: Excellent question! It refers to the Shen shifting and losing its position. Although manifested in the body, it does not immediately cause death unless Evil Qi invades, leading to early death or longevity.
If Evil has not invaded, there is no disease; if Evil desires to invade but sudden death occurs...
For instance, if the Jueyin channel loses control, the Heaven Qi is deficient, and the Human Qi Liver is deficient. Sensing the Heaven creates a double deficiency, so the Hun (Ethereal Soul) wanders upward.
Liver deficiency, Heaven deficiency, plus sweating damaging the Liver creates a triple deficiency. The scattered Shen wanders to the upper position. The Left Wuying Jun (Liver Spirit) is below, Shen Guang (Light of Shen) does not gather, White Corpse Ghost arrives, causing sudden death.
If Evil invades the Great Qi, the body can still be treated with acupuncture.
If the spirit in the eyes remains, although the limbs are cold, the heart and abdomen are warm; if there is no saliva in the mouth and the tongue is not retracted, it is not a Jue injury, but named Shi Jue (Corpse Jue), so it can be saved and revived.
Acupuncture the points passed by the Foot Shaoyang channel.
The point passed by the Foot Shaoyang channel is Qiuxu (GB40), located in the depression below the lateral malleolus of the foot, five Cun (same-body Cun) from Linqi, the Source point of the Foot Shaoyang channel. Use a filiform needle. Warm the needle near the patient's body until warm. Press the acupoint with the left hand and recite the spell: "The Supreme Primeval Lord dwells constantly on the left, controlling the Three Hun Souls." Recite three times. Then call the names of the Three Hun Souls: Shuangling, Taiguang, Youjing, reciting three times. Visualize a Green Dragon under the acupoint. Insert the needle to a depth of three Cun (same-body Cun), retain for three breaths, then slowly withdraw the needle. Have someone press the acupoint; if rumbling occurs in the mouth and abdomen, it is treatable.
Next, acupuncture the Shu (Transport) point of the Liver.
Located one and a half cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the ninth thoracic vertebra. Use a filiform needle, warming it against the body. Press the acupoint with the left hand and recite: "The Taiwei Emperor Yuan Ying controls the Hun Soul, True Yuan and origin, let it enter the Blue Clouds." Call the Three Hun Souls as before, three times. Insert the needle to a depth of three Cun (same-body Cun), retain for three breaths. Advance two fen, retain for three breaths. Withdraw to three fen, retain for one breath, then slowly withdraw. When Qi arrives, revival occurs.
When a person suffers Heart deficiency and encounters the loss of control of the Sovereign and Minister Fire ruling the Heaven, sensing leads to Triple Deficiency.
Or if sweating comes from the Heart, causing the Hun and Shen to reverse upward into the N wan Palace.
Encountering insufficient Fire, the Black Corpse Ghost invades, causing sudden death.
It can be saved within one hour. Although the limbs are cold and pulse is closed, if the color does not change, the tongue is not retracted, it can be saved. If the spirit in the eyes does not change, it can be needled.
Acupuncture the points passed by the Hand Shaoyang channel.
The point passed by the Hand Shaoyang channel is Yangchi (TE4), located in the depression at the back of the wrist, the Source point of the Hand Shaoyang channel. Use a filiform needle. Warm the patient's body, press the acupoint with the hand, and recite: "Taiyi Emperor N wan General God, Danwu Black Qi returns to restore the True." Recite three times. Visualize a Red Phoenix under the acupoint. Insert two fen, retain for seven breaths. Advance one fen, retain for three breaths. Withdraw to one fen, retain for one breath. Slowly withdraw the needle and press the acupoint with the hand for revival. Then acupuncture the Xin Shu (Heart Shu) point.
Located one and a half cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the fifth thoracic vertebra. Use a filiform needle, warming it against the body. Press the acupoint with the hand and recite: "Dan Fang Guards the Spirit Five Emperors, Upper Qing Yang harmonizes and spreads the body, returning to Huang Ting." Recite three times. Insert to a depth of seven fen (same-body Cun), retain for one fen. Advance one fen, retain for one breath. Withdraw to two fen, retain for one breath. Slowly withdraw the needle and press the acupoint with the hand.
When a person suffers Spleen disease and encounters the loss of control of the Taiyin ruling the Heaven, sensing leads to Triple Deficiency. Double deficiency plus sweating from the Spleen results in Triple Deficiency. Zhi and Yi (Intellect and Will) wander to the upper position, hence called Loss of Control.
Encountering insufficient Earth, the Green Corpse Ghost evil invades, causing sudden death. It can be saved within one hour. If limbs are cold but body and lips are warm, survival is possible. No saliva in the mouth indicates Shi Jue.
Acupuncture the points passed by the Foot Yangming channel.
The point passed by the Foot Yangming channel is Chongyang (ST42), located in the arterial pulse between the bones of the dorsum of the foot, three Cun from Xangu, the Source point of the Foot Yangming channel. Use a filiform needle, warming it against the body. Press the acupoint with the hand and recite: "Always in Hun Ting beginning clarity, Tai Ning Yuan He spreads Qi, Jia and Zhen." Recite three times. First visualize Huang Ting under the acupoint. Insert three fen, retain for three breaths. Advance two fen, retain for one breath. Slowly withdraw and press with the hand. Then acupuncture the Pi Shu (Spleen Shu) point.
Located one and a half cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the eleventh thoracic vertebra. Use a filiform needle, pressing with the hand. Recite: "Tai Shi establishes position, commanding Kun Yuan, Huang Zhen Qi returns to complete wandering." Recite three times. Insert three fen, retain for two breaths. Advance to two fen. When moving Qi arrives, slowly withdraw the needle.
When a person suffers Lung disease and encounters the loss of control of the Yangming ruling the Heaven, sensing leads to Triple Deficiency.
Human deficiency, Heaven deficiency, plus sweating from the Lung results in Triple Deficiency. Hun wanders upward, hence called Loss of Control.
Encountering insufficient Metal, the Red Corpse Ghost invades, causing sudden death.
It can be saved within one hour. Even without Qi and with cold hands and feet, if the heart and abdomen are warm, the nose is slightly warm, the spirit in the eyes does not rotate, there is no saliva in the mouth, and the tongue/scrotum is not retracted, all can be needled to revive.
Acupuncture the points passed by the Hand Yangming channel.
The point passed by the Hand Yangming channel is Hegu (LI4), located between the thumb and index finger, the Source point of the Hand Yangming channel. Use a filiform needle, warming the body. Press the acupoint with the hand first and recite: "Qing Qi truly complete, Di Fu Yuan Ri, Seven Po return to the right, now returning to Ben Tian." Recite three times. Visualize White Qi under the acupoint. Insert three fen, retain for three breaths. Advance to five fen, retain for three breaths. Withdraw one fen, retain for one breath. Slowly withdraw the needle and press the acupoint for revival. Then acupuncture the Fei Shu (Lung Shu) point.
Fei Shu is located one and a half cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the third thoracic vertebra. Use a filiform needle, warming the body. Press the acupoint with the hand first and recite: "Left Yuan True Person Six Harmonies Qi Bin, Tian Fu Di Li enters its jurisdiction." Recite three times. Insert one and a half Cun, retain for three breaths. Advance two fen, retain for one breath. Slowly withdraw the needle and press the acupoint.
When a person suffers Kidney disease and encounters the loss of control of the Taiyang ruling the Heaven, sensing leads to Triple Deficiency. Human deficiency, Heaven deficiency, plus sweating from the Kidney results in Triple Deficiency. The Kidney Shen retreats and wanders to Huang Ting. Although not leaving the body, Shen Guang does not gather, hence Loss of Control.
Encountering a year of insufficient Water operation, the Yellow Corpse Ghost invades, absorbing the Righteous Qi and Shen Hun, causing sudden death.
If Qi ceases, limbs are cold, heart and abdomen are slightly warm, eye color does not change, lips/mouth/tongue do not change, and there is no saliva, it can be saved.
Acupuncture the points passed by the Foot Taiyang channel. The point passed by the Foot Taiyang channel is Jinggu (BL64), located in the depression at the junction of red and white flesh below the large bone on the lateral side of the foot, the Source point of the Foot Taiyang channel. Use a filiform needle, warming the body. Press the acupoint with the hand and recite: "Yuan Yang Nurture Infant Five Elders and Zhen, Ni Wan Xuan Hua replenishes Essence to exist long." Visualize Black Qi under the acupoint. Insert two and a half fen, retain for three breaths. Advance to three fen, retain for one breath. Slowly withdraw the needle and press the acupoint.
Acupuncture the Shu point of Foot Shaoyang.
Located one and a half cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the tenth thoracic vertebra. Use a filiform needle, pressing the acupoint with the hand first. Recite: "Tian Xuan Sun Crystal Tai He Kun Ling, Zhen Yuan internally guarded holding entering Shi Qing." Recite three times. Insert three fen, retain for three breaths. Advance five fen, retain for three breaths. Slowly withdraw the needle and press.
The Yellow Emperor asked: The twelve organs assist each other. If Shen loses its position, causing the Shen Cai (Spiritual Radiance) to be incomplete, fearing Evil invasion, treatment involves acupuncture. I wish to hear the essentials. Clarify the acupuncture methods for the loss of control of the Five Shen, and speak of the wonderful uses of the Twelve Shen.
Qi Bo bowed twice and said: Your inquiry is thorough! This is the true doctrine of ultimate principles. Only a Sage Emperor could investigate this source. This is called Qi and Shen combining with the Dao, matching the signs of Heaven. Human Qi movement combines with the ruling Heaven; Heavenly Qi combines due to prosperity and decline. The Heart is the Official of the Monarch, from which Shen Ming (Divine Illumination) emerges.
It manages all things, hence the Official of the Monarch. The Heart has form and Shen resides in the Heart; thus the Heart exists. Therefore, the Heart is the residence of Shen. If the True Heart loses control, becoming deficient and Shen not guarding its position, it wanders recklessly among chambers, the Five Shen are unsettled, leading to deficiency.
The Source of the Hand Shaoyin channel is Duigu (Shenmen HT7). This is the Source of the True Heart, located in the depression at the end of the Duigu bone behind the palm, also known as Zhongdu. Use a long needle, warmed in the mouth. Insert three fen, retain for three breaths. Advance one fen, retain for one breath. Slowly withdraw the needle and press the acupoint for revival. The Lung is the Official of Transmission, from which Zhi Jie (Regulation) emerges.
Positioned high as the Monarch, hence the Official of Transmission, governing Ying and Wei, thus Regulation arises. Natural breathing, excessive speech losing regulation, drinking cold and raw food, chilling, and grief cause the Lung Shen to lose its position, indicating deficiency.
Acupuncture the Source of the Hand Taiyin channel.
The Source of the Lung emerges at Taiyuan (LU9), located in the depression one and a half Cun between the large tendon behind the palm, the point passed by the Hand Taiyin channel. Use a long needle, warmed in the mouth. Press the acupoint with the hand. Insert three Cun (same-body Cun), retain for three breaths. Shen guards Heavenly Breath, returning to the Original Yuan, named Returning to the Ancestral Root.
If a person has various diseases, the Shen guarding its position can enter the breath of Xuan Zhong and return to the True of Life. The Dao of preserving Shen can last long.
