The swelling and pain in the lower back mentioned by the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel occurs because the first lunar month corresponds to Yin (Tiger), which belongs to Taiyang. In the first month, Yang Qi begins to ascend while Yin Qi remains strong; since Yang Qi has not yet been able to distribute according to its proper sequence, swelling and pain in the lower back occur.
If weakness on one side of the body leads to limping, it is because in the first month, Yang Qi thaws and Earth Qi begins to rise. The term "partial deficiency" refers to a slight insufficiency of righteous Qi due to excessive cold during winter, resulting in weakness on one side and limping.
The sensation of stiffness in the head pulling on the back is caused by Yang Qi surging excessively upward and contending with Yin Qi, leading to head stiffness.
Tinnitus occurs because Yang Qi, like all things, becomes abundant and leaps upward, causing tinnitus.
Severe cases manifesting as mania or epilepsy occur because Yang Qi accumulates entirely in the upper part, while Yin Qi follows from below, creating a condition of deficiency below and excess above, thus leading to mania and epilepsy.
Deafness associated with a floating pulse is due to pathological changes occurring within the movement of Qi.
Loss of voice caused by pathogenic factors entering internally results from the decline of Yang Qi after it has become excessive.
Internal depletion of essence combined with Jue (reversal/cold extremities) leads to loss of voice and paralysis; this is a manifestation of Kidney Deficiency. When Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) Qi fails to reach its destination, Jue occurs.
Pain in the heart and hypochondrium mentioned by the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) channel indicates that Shaoyang Qi is abundant. Shaoyang is exteriorly-related to the Heart. In the ninth month, Yang Qi is exhausted and Yin Qi becomes strong, causing pain in the heart and hypochondrium.
Inability to turn or lie on one's side is because Yin Qi governs storage; when things are stored, they do not move, hence the inability to turn.
Restlessness or jumping movements in severe cases occur because in the ninth month, all things decline, and grasses and trees fall. Qi shifts from Yang to Yin, Yang grows downward while Yin becomes abundant, hence termed "Yue" (jumping/restlessness).
The shivering chills described by the Yangming (Bright Yang) channel occur because Yangming corresponds to Wu (Horse). The fifth month represents Yin within abundant Yang. When Yang is at its peak and Yin Qi acts upon it, shivering chills occur.
Swelling of the calves and retraction/weakness of the thighs occur because the fifth month is Yin within abundant Yang. Yang declines in the fifth month, and a strand of Yin Qi ascends to contend with Yang, causing calf swelling and thigh weakness.
Upper-body wheezing accompanied by edema occurs because Yin Qi descends but then rises again; the rising pathogenic factor lodges between the Zang-Fu organs, resulting in edema.
Chest pain and shortness of breath occur because Water Qi resides within the Zang-Fu. Water is Yin Qi; when Yin Qi stagnates in the middle, chest pain and shortness of breath result.
Severe cases involving Jue (reversal), aversion to people and fire, and startle upon hearing the sound of wood occur because Yang Qi and Yin Qi contend with each other, and Water and Fire are antagonistic, leading to startle.
The desire to close doors and windows and stay alone arises because Yin and Yang contend; when Yang is exhausted and Yin is abundant, one desires to stay enclosed.
Behaviors such as climbing high to sing and discarding clothes to run during illness occur because Yin and Yang contend again, and Yang merges outwardly into the Yang aspect, causing the patient to discard clothes and run.
Pathogenic factors lodging in the Sun Luo (Branch Collaterals) causing headache, nasal congestion with rhinorrhea, and abdominal swelling occur because Yangming Qi merges upward; the upper region involves the Sun Luo and Taiyin (Greater Yin), leading to these symptoms.
Abdominal distension mentioned by the Taiyin channel occurs because Taiyin corresponds to Zi (Rat). In the eleventh month, the Qi of all things is stored internally, hence the occurrence of distension.
Belching caused by Qi moving upward to the Heart occurs because excessive Yin Qi moves upward to Yangming; the collaterals of Yangming connect to the Heart, hence belching.
Vomiting after eating occurs because food accumulates and overflows upward, causing vomiting.
Feeling relieved after defecation or passing gas occurs because in the twelfth month, Yin Qi declines downward while Yang Qi is about to emerge externally; thus, relief is felt after bowel movements or flatulence.
Lower back pain mentioned by the Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) channel occurs because Shaoyin corresponds to the Kidney. In the tenth month, the Yang Qi of all things is injured, leading to lower back pain.
Vomiting, coughing, and upper-body wheezing occur because Yin Qi is below and Yang Qi is above; various Yang Qi floats without foundation or guidance, resulting in vomiting, coughing, and wheezing.
A sallow complexion, inability to stand for long periods, and blurred vision upon rising from sitting occur because Yin and Yang of all things are unstable without a master. As Autumn Qi arrives and light frost falls, the killing energy affects all things, depleting Yin and Yang internally, leading to blurred vision.
Shortness of breath and irritability occur because the governance of Yang Qi is disordered. When Yang Qi cannot be governed, it cannot exit; Liver Qi should regulate but fails to do so, leading to irritability. This condition is named Jian Jue (Frying Reversal).
Fear resembling being hunted occurs because Autumn Qi has not fully departed, Yin Qi is scant, and Yang Qi enters internally; the contention between Yin and Yang generates fear.
Aversion to the smell of food occurs because the Stomach lacks Qi.
A dark complexion resembling earth color occurs because Autumn Qi depletes the interior, altering the complexion.
Coughing up blood occurs because the Yang Mai (Yang Vessels) are injured. When Yang Qi is not yet abundant in the upper part but the vessels are full, coughing ensues, and blood appears from the nose.
Sanction (hernia) and lower abdominal swelling in women mentioned by the Jueyin (Terminal Yin) channel occur because Jueyin corresponds to Chen (Dragon). The third month is Yin within Yang; pathogenic factors reside in the middle, hence sanction and lower abdominal swelling.
Lower back and spine pain preventing bending or stretching occurs because in the third month, all things flourish; plants bend down but do not look up.
Lung Bi (difficulty urinating), Sanction, and skin swelling occur because Yin Qi is also abundant, causing vessel distension and blockage, hence Lung Bi and Sanction.
Severe cases manifesting as dry throat and internal heat occur because contention between Yin and Yang generates heat, leading to a dry throat.
