Ju Ye Tang (Chrysanthemum Leaf Decoction) [Added Formula]. Treats all types of wind diseases, characterized by dizziness and vertigo of the head and eyes, vomiting, and edema of the face and eyes.
Chrysanthemi Flos (remove peduncle), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [equal parts].
Grind the above into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add 1.5 zhan of water and 3 slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decoct together until 0.7 zhan remains, filter out the dregs, and take warm after meals.
Huangdi asked: What should be forbidden in febrile diseases? Qibo replied: When a febrile disease has slightly improved, eating meat will cause recurrence, and overeating will leave residual heat; this is what must be forbidden.
Because the febrile disease has just slightly improved and pathogens are not yet completely cleared, if one does not regulate diet and labor, and is disturbed by emotional desires, leading to deficiency of Spleen and Stomach Qi, which cannot digest solid food, heat will regenerate.
The Five Zang organs all have heat manifestations. Febrile diseases belong to the category of Shang Han (Cold Damage). When humans are injured by cold pathogens, they develop febrile diseases. Cold toxins hide in the skin and muscles, Yang Qi fails to circulate and dissipate, causing internal stagnation and knotting; thus, those with Shang Han instead present with heat. Although the heat may be severe, it is not fatal, but Ju Yang (Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian) is at the head and is crucial. Ju Yang is the leader of all Yang meridians. All Yang meridians govern heat through Qi and cold through Blood. Even if a febrile disease has healed, if it recurs, it is because although the pathogenic factor has declined, residual heat remains hidden. It clashes with the Qi of grain, and the two heats combine, leaving residual heat due to the presence of heat. Even if pathogens are not fully exhausted and residual heat remains, it will recur.
When all Five Zang organs have heat, observe the facial complexion. Liver heat causes redness on the left cheek first; Heart heat causes redness on the center of the face first; Spleen heat causes redness on the nose first; Lung heat causes redness on the right cheek first; Kidney heat causes redness on the chin first. In Liver heat, urine is yellow, abdomen hurts, there is excessive sleepiness, and the body is hot. When heat struggles with healthy Qi, there is mania,惊悸 (palpitations/fright), distension and pain in the hypochondrium, restlessness of hands and feet, and inability to lie down peacefully. In Heart heat, there is unhappiness, and fever appears after several days. When heat struggles with healthy Qi, there is sudden heart pain, vexation and oppression, frequent vomiting, headache, red face, and anhidrosis. In Spleen heat, the head feels heavy, cheeks hurt, there is mental vexation, blueish complexion, desire to vomit, and body heat. When heat struggles with healthy Qi, there is lower back pain preventing lying supine, abdominal fullness and diarrhea, and pain in both mandibles. In Lung heat, there is piloerection, aversion to wind and cold, yellow tongue coating, and body heat. When heat struggles with healthy Qi, there is wheezing and cough, pain moving across the chest and back, difficulty taking deep breaths, unbearable headache, sweating followed by chills. In Kidney heat, there is soreness and pain in the lower back, bitter taste in mouth, thirst with frequent drinking, and discomfort after eating. When heat struggles with healthy Qi, there is neck pain and stiffness, aversion to cold with soreness, heat in the soles of feet, and reluctance to speak.
The Classics state: Sweating with a rapid and forceful pulse is a death sign. A pulse that does not correspond with sweating is a second death sign. Delirious speech and loss of spirit are a third death sign. These are all caused by stagnant and knotted heat that cannot disperse, leading to critical danger.
Su Wen states: Various heat diseases causing visual obscuration, convulsions, sudden aphonia, coma, agitation, mania, cursing, fright, swelling, pain, soreness, Qi rebellion, all belong to the Qi of the Hand-Shaoyang San Jiao (Triple Burner) Ministerial Fire and Pericardium Collateral.
The True Yin of Kidney Water is originally deficient, while Heart Fire hyperactive Yang accumulates heat severely, causing wind-heat congestion. Symptoms include dizziness and vertigo of the head and face, numbness of limbs, pruritus, tendon contraction and curling, chest and diaphragm stuffiness, occasional pain and oppression, nasal obstruction with rhinorrhea or epistaxis, oral and lingual ulcers, throat discomfort, dental caries, or generalized skin sores, tinea, and scabies. There may be somniloquy, bruxism, fright, and spontaneous sweating, or forgetfulness, mental unrest, irritability, and excessive sleepiness, or dysuria and constipation, or irritability with abdominal fullness, or toxin accumulation from excessive alcohol consumption. Excessive labor damages Shen (Spirit) and Qi internally and externally, causing mental unrest, bitter taste in mouth, dry throat, reduced appetite, and transformation into various wind-heat diseases, resulting in emaciation and fatigue. This applies to those emaciated from alcohol disease, or the elderly and weak. Due to deficiency in Spleen and Kidney meridians, wind-heat dryness and stagnation cause dark complexion, loose teeth, emaciation, and flaccidity. Internal heat with vexation and fullness, hunger without desire to eat, diabetes mellitus (Xiao Ke), polyphagia with emaciation, or Xiao Ke with deficiency, facial edema, and polyuria. Overuse of sweet, acrid, and hot medicines transforms into the Three Xiaos (Three Consumptions): Upper Xiao presents as thirst, Middle Xiao as polyphagia, Lower Xiao as Kidney deficiency with urine resembling grease.
Shen Xiong Wan (Divine Ligusticum Pill). Treats all heat syndromes; regular use maintains health. It resolves phlegm-fluid retention, eliminates wine-food stagnation, clears the head and eyes, benefits the throat and diaphragm, unblocks systemic stagnation, promotes Qi circulation, and restores health. It strengthens spirit and body, increases resistance to injury and illness. It treats women's menstrual disorders, postpartum blood stasis, heavy and painful loins and legs, pediatric accumulated heat, and convulsive wind. Zang Yong Wan is also called Xian Ren Wan. Adding Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), and Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) each half liang is named Shen Xiong Wan.
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) [each 2 liang]; Qian Niu (Pharbitidis Semen), Hua Shi (Talcum) [each 4 liang].
Grind into fine powder, make pills with water drops, size of small beans. Take 10-15 pills with warm water, increasing by 10 pills per dose, three times daily. Taking with cold water is also acceptable. Making pills with refined honey is better. For chronic heat stagnation, regardless of emaciation or old age/weakness, and for all conditions suitable for purging, start with 10 pills, increasing by 10 pills per dose, stopping when bowel movement occurs. Regular use only clears intestinal filth and stagnation without damaging harmonious Qi, pushing out the old and generating the new. Bowel movements become smooth without harsh irritation or fatigue/deficiency, satisfying the patient. If heat is extreme requiring urgent purging, take 40-50 pills. If no effect, take again, adjusting according to judgment. For children aged 3-5 years, make pills the size of sesame seeds.
This method and medicine are excellent. Regularly taking 20-30 pills benefits the Zang-Fu organs, offering benefit without harm.
For women with foul discharge from blood stasis, add Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) half liang. For mild cases, regular use suffices; for severe cases, purging achieves the result, opening stagnation and allowing foul matter to discharge daily.
This formula is contraindicated for those with Spleen-Stomach sliding diarrhea, cold patterns with slow pulse, women with menstrual disorders or continuous postpartum bleeding, and pregnant women. Except for these, it treats all wind-heat mixed diseases causing stuffiness and congestion, disharmony of Shen Qi, or serves as maintenance for healthy individuals, showing efficacy with regular use.
Inferring the medicinal properties from clinical effects requires mastery of the principles of creation in Ben Cao (Materia Medica); otherwise, it is unknowable. Just as Confucius praised the Yi Jing (Book of Changes) for its clear principles and benevolent transformations, yet the great Dao's function remains unseen, saying "Manifesting Benevolence, Hiding Usage," hence named Cang Yong Wan (Hidden Usage Pill), reflecting this intent. Given long-standing errors in the world, people dislike such wonderful formulas and refuse to take them. Often, those who achieve great effects sincerely request the formula, and reluctantly, it is given. Upon seeing the formula, suspicion and fear arise, and it is not used. Some, believing in its efficacy, seek to spread it widely to save lives, but public debate breeds suspicion and slander, causing vulgar physicians to fear it, hindering the divine Dao and obstructing treatment. Future gentlemen should practice this medicine, manifest its benevolence to others, but keep the formula secret and hide its usage.
Alternatively, adding Huang Lian, Chuan Xiong, and Bo He each half liang to a method treats all dizziness and vertigo of the head and eyes more effectively.
Chai Hu Yin Zi (Bupleurum Decoction). Treats resolving all muscular heat, bone-steaming fever, accumulated heat attacks, alternating chills and fever. (External heat with internal cold causes chills; internal heat with external harmony causes fever; pathogenic heat half in exterior and half in interior, with disorderly entry and exit, causes alternating chills and fever, representing Yin-Yang contention.) Accumulated heat with shivering. (Yang Qi of the exterior and healthy Qi accumulate with pathogenic heat internally, blocking vessel flow, causing cold body and absent pulse, shivering with vexation and thirst.) Also treats Shang Han where sweating fails to resolve the disease, or various internal/external pathogenic heat causing dry mouth and vexation/thirst, or unresolved heat after purgation, relapse after sweating, bone-steaming lung萎 (flaccidity) with wheezing/cough, women's residual diseases, and postpartum menstrual disorders.

Grind into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, add 1 zhan of water and 3 slices of Sheng Jiang. Decoct to 0.7 zhan, take warm, three times daily. Adjust dosage for severe heat.
Cui Xuanwu's Chai Hu Yin Zi adds Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), and Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) each 3 qian. Liu Tingrui's Chai Hu Yin Zi differs in proportions, so it is recorded here. Chai Hu and Gan Cao each 2 liang; Huang Qin, Dang Gui, Shao Yao, Da Huang each 1 liang; Ren Shen half liang; Ban Xia half liang. This is for severe labor-induced heat disease. Take 5-7 qian, regulating by bowel movement. Increase if no effect to prevent recurrence.
Mu Xiang Wan An Wan (Aromatic Musk Ten-Thousand-Safety Pill). Treats all wind-heat stagnation, Qi and Blood congestion, dizziness, nasal congestion and tinnitus, tendon contraction, limb emaciation and flaccidity, throat discomfort, chest/diaphragm stuffiness, abdominal/hypochondriac pain, dry/intestinal constipation, stranguria, heavy/painful loins and legs, acute hernia masses, hard accumulations, intestinal stagnation and gastric fullness, chronic unresolved conditions, migrating pain, aphonia, paralysis, epilepsy, dampness with abdominal distension and edema.

Grind into powder, make pills with water drops, size of small beans. Take 10-20 pills with warm water after meals, three times daily. Regular use regulates Qi and Blood, promoting slow aging. If already weakened with constipation, clearing intestinal filth allows gradual increase to 30-50 pills. Contraindicated in pregnancy and sliding diarrhea. Sliding diarrhea fears Qian Niu and Da Huang; pregnancy fears Tian Nan Xing and Ban Xia.
Xiao Pi Wan (Eliminate Lump Pill). Treats severe accumulated damp-toxin heat causing jaundice of body and face, chest/hypochondriac/abdominal fullness with vomiting, inability to eat, flaccidity and difficulty moving, throat discomfort, limb emaciation, dizziness/palpitations with diaphragmatic heat, restlessness, excess Heart Fire acting recklessly causing hemoptysis/epistaxis above, and hematochezia/hematuria below, intestinal wind and hemorrhoids, San Jiao congestion, Xiao Ke (Diabetes) with middle heat, abnormal digestion, and pediatric malnutrition heat.

Grind into fine powder, make pills with water drops, size of small beans. Take 10 pills with fresh well water; warm water is also acceptable. Children: size of sesame seeds. The root pathology is severe internal damp-heat. If there is spontaneous diarrhea, remove Da Huang and Qian Niu. Avoid heating foods.
He Zhong Wan (Harmonize the Middle Pill). Treats dry mouth and tongue, throat discomfort, chest/hypochondriac fullness, heart/abdominal pain and oppression, red/scanty urination, constipation, wind-Qi stagnation, dizziness, tendon spasm, limb pain/fatigue, all wind congestion.
