一岁六位,各司其气。所谓热无犯热,寒无犯寒者,乃司气以热,用热勿太过,而无犯其热也;
(Continuing from the previous text) Lin (addition of guest qi), only harmonizes with the guest qi ruling the season, but does not harmonize with the left and right intercalary qi. Herein, it discusses both the Qi in Quan (Earthly Branches/Underlying Qi) and its left and right intercalary qi. This cites one case to illustrate the rest, further clarifying that the addition of guest qi is based on the Qi in Quan and adds upon it.
During the Fifth Qi period, Dryness and Dampness alternate in dominance. Deep Yin cold qi spreads. Cold qi affects the body, and wind and rain occur.
The guest qi of the Fifth Qi is Taiyin Wet Earth, while the main qi is Yangming Dry Metal. Thus, Dryness and Dampness alternate in dominance. The Qi of Earth and Metal both belong to Yin-Cold, so deep Yin cold qi spreads. When cold qi affects the body, this "deep Yin cold qi" refers to wind and rain; hence, it is said that wind and rain occur. In the preceding Fourth Qi period, diseases such as jaundice and edema caused by dampness were already discussed, so they are not mentioned again here.
At the end of the year (Final Qi), Wei Huo (Fearful Fire, referring to Shaoyang Ministerial Fire) commands. Yang qi undergoes great transformation. Hibernating insects emerge and are seen. Flowing water does not freeze. Earth qi erupts vigorously. Grass and plants grow. People feel comfortable. However, warm epidemics may occur.
The guest qi at the Final Qi position is Shaoyang Ministerial Fire, hence Wei Huo commands. As stated previously, "its command is swift," which refers to the command of Wei Huo. Fire belongs to Yang, so Yang qi undergoes great transformation. The climate is hot and not cold, so hibernating insects emerge and flowing water does not freeze. With Shaoyang in Quan, the Qi adds upon itself, causing earth qi to erupt vigorously, grass and plants to grow, and the weather to be warm, making people feel comfortable. Yet, they suffer from warm and violent febrile diseases. "Li" (violent/severe) refers to sudden severity.
One must suppress stagnant Qi, nourish its source of transformation, assist its Luck (Yun), and prevent evil Qi from prevailing. For the year's Luck, it is suitable to use Pungent (Xin) flavors to regulate the upper part and Salty (Xian) flavors to regulate the lower part. Regarding the Qi of Wei Huo, do not recklessly violate it. When using Warm medicines, avoid Warm times; when using Hot medicines, avoid Hot times; when using Cool medicines, avoid Cool times; when using Cold medicines, avoid Cold times. Dietary choices should follow the same principles. If there are false appearances contrary to normalcy, act oppositely. This is the way. Acting against this leads to disease.
Stagnation is the basis for recurrence (Fu). Therefore, one must suppress stagnant Qi. To suppress it, one must especially nourish its source of transformation. Since the annual Luck is insufficient, one must assist its Luck. Assisting its Luck prevents evil Qi from prevailing. Wood Qi is in the upper part; it is suitable to use the Pungent flavor of Metal to regulate the upper part. Fire Qi is in the lower part; it is suitable to use the Salty flavor of Water to regulate the lower part. Regarding the Shaoyang Ministerial Fire Qi, do not recklessly violate it; do not use Fire-flavor medicines to violate it. When treating diseases with medicine, one should also use Warm medicines avoiding Warm times and Hot medicines avoiding Hot times, thereby achieving balance.
The Yellow Emperor said: Excellent. What you have said, Master, is indeed comprehensive. However, how can we understand its manifestations (Ying)?
Ying refers to verification or signs. Regarding the Six Qi ruling the seasons and the addition of guest qi, how can we clearly understand their verification?
Qibo said: Your question is truly insightful! The Six Qi move in a sequence and stop at specific positions. Therefore, usually on the first day of the first lunar month at dawn, observe them. By observing their positions, you can know where they are located. If Yun (Luck) is excessive, its arrival is early; if Yun is insufficient, its arrival is late. This is the Way of Heaven, the constant nature of Qi. If Yun is neither excessive nor insufficient, it is called a Correct Year (Zheng Sui), and its arrival coincides with the proper time.
"Dang" is pronounced with the departing tone, as below. "Moving in a sequence" means the Six Qi ruling the seasons start with Jueyin and end with Taiyang. "Stopping at positions" means the addition of Six Qi starts at the right position of Qi in Quan and ends at the original position of Qi in Quan. To clarify the manifestation, we usually take the first day of the first lunar month at dawn as the beginning of the year to inspect it. By observing the position, we know where the Qi is located, thus clarifying the manifestation. Whenever annual Yun is excessive, its arrival precedes the celestial time; when annual Yun is insufficient, its arrival follows the celestial time. If annual Yun is neither excessive nor insufficient, corresponding to years of all Year Branches (Sui Hui), it is called a Correct Year, and its arrival coincides with the proper time. Investigating in this way clarifies the manifestation.
The Yellow Emperor said: Sheng (Overcoming) and Fu (Rebounding) Qi are constantly present. Disasters and calamities arrive at their times. How should we observe them?
Sheng and Fu are the normal state of Qi. Disasters (Zai) and calamities (Sheng) are changes in Qi. The normal state can certainly be observed; how then should the change be observed?
Qibo said: That which does not conform to Qi transformation is called a disaster.
Qi changes have regular observations each year. If there is a Qi phenomenon that does not conform to the normal Qi transformation, it is called a disaster. This is the method of observation.
The Yellow Emperor said: What is the cycle and origin of the numbers of Heaven and Earth?
"Number" refers to the literal meaning, as below. The numbers of Heaven and Earth form a cycle of sixty years, ending and restarting without limit. Hence, the Emperor asks about it.
Qibo said: Your question is extremely detailed! It elucidates the Dao. The number begins from above and ends below. Before the midpoint of the year, Heaven Qi dominates. After the midpoint of the year, Earth Qi dominates. Heaven and Earth interact, and Qi Intersection (Qi Jiao) dominates. The annual cycle is completed. Thus it is said: Can the positions, times, Qi, and months be known? This refers to Qi.
"Time" was erroneously printed as "Ming" in old editions; now corrected. The numbers of beginning and ending are where the Dao resides; this elucidates the Dao. Tracing the origin of numbers, it starts with the Heavenly Stems (above) and ends with the Earthly Branches (below). Thus, before the midpoint of the year, Heavenly Stem Heaven Qi dominates; after the midpoint, Earthly Branch Earth Qi dominates. The principle of interaction between Heaven and Earth corresponds to the human body, where Qi Intersection dominates. Qi Intersection is where humans reside. *Liu Wei Zhi Da Lun* states: "The positions of above and below, within the Qi Intersection, is where humans reside." From one year to sixty years, this remains true throughout. Thus, the annual cycle is completed. Within one year, the four seasons have six positions, and twelve months have twenty-four solar terms. Thus it is said: Can positions, times, Qi, and months be known? This explains that positions, times, Qi, and months refer to the twenty-four solar terms of the Six Qi, which is what is meant by "Qi." Knowing the positions of the four seasons and the Qi of each month to clarify manifestations allows one to know the numbers of the beginning and ending of Heaven and Earth.
The Yellow Emperor said: I am in charge of these matters (calendar/astronomy) and act according to the rules, yet they do not accord with the Qi numbers. Why?
"Matters" refer to annual affairs. "Numbers" refer to Qi numbers. The Emperor pioneered the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches to govern calendars and clarify seasons, saying "I am in charge of these matters." Acting according to the rules, why do the affairs of the year not accord with the Qi numbers?
Qibo said: The application of Qi has abundance and scarcity. Its transformation and harmony have prosperity and decline. Scarcity, abundance, prosperity, and decline all correspond to the transformation.
Throughout the year, the applications of Wind, Heat, Dampness, Fire, Dryness, and Cold have excess (Tai Guo) and deficiency (Bu Ji). "Abundance" means excess. "Scarcity" means deficiency. The transformation of Wu Yun (Five Movements) harmonizes with all things, having surplus and insufficiency. "Prosperity" means surplus. "Decline" means insufficiency. The prosperity and decline of harmonious transformation, and the abundance and scarcity of Qi application, all align with the transformations of the four seasons, as described below.
The Yellow Emperor said: I wish to hear about "Tong Hua" (Same Transformation). What does it mean?
Qibo stated that scarcity, abundance, prosperity, and decline share the same transformation; thus, the question arises: what is Tong Hua?
Qibo said: Wind and warmth share the transformation of Spring. Heat, haze, dusk, and fire share the transformation of Summer. Overcoming (Sheng) and Rebounding (Fu) share [their respective seasonal transformations]. Dryness, clarity, smoke, and dew share the transformation of Autumn. Clouds, rain, dusk, and dust share the transformation of Late Summer. Cold Qi, frost, snow, and ice share the transformation of Winter. These are the common patterns of alternating prosperity and decline in the transformations of Heaven and Earth's Wu Yun and Liu Qi.
Tong Hua means that the Qi of Liu Qi and Wu Yun share the same transformation of the four seasons and five elements. Thus, the Wind and Warmth of Jueyin Wood Qi share the transformation of Jueyin Wood and Spring. The Heat, Haze, Dusk, and Fire of Shaoyin and Shaoyang share the transformation of Zhizhu Fire and Summer. The Overcoming and Rebounding of the Six Qi also conform to the four seasons and five elements; hence, Sheng and Fu are the same. For example, Wind overcoming shares the Wood of Spring; Heat overcoming shares the Fire of Summer; Wind rebounding shares the Wood of Spring; Heat rebounding shares the Fire of Summer. The Dryness, Clarity, Smoke, and Dew of Yangming Metal Qi share the transformation of Shang Metal and Autumn. The Clouds, Rain, Dusk, and Dust of Taiyin Earth Qi share the transformation of Gong Earth and Late Summer. The Cold Qi, Frost, Snow, and Ice of Taiyang Water Qi share the transformation of Yu Water and Winter. These are the transformations of Heaven and Earth's Wu Yun, which are identical. Throughout the year, it often happens that there is Qi out of season. This is the common pattern of alternating prosperity and decline, which causes discrepancies in Qi numbers.
The Yellow Emperor said: When Wu Yun operates in accordance with Heaven's transformation, it is called Tian Fu (Heavenly符/Sign). I know this. I wish to hear about those that transform in accordance with Earth. What does that mean?
When Earth Yun matches Taiyin Si Tian (Guest Qi), or Metal Yun matches Yangming Si Tian, etc., the Wu Yun and Five Elements match the transforming Qi of Si Tian, called Tian Fu. I know this. What does it mean when Wu Yun and Five Elements transform in accordance with Earth?
Qibo said: There are three years where Excess matches Heaven's transformation, and three years where Deficiency matches Heaven's transformation. There are three years where Excess matches Earth's transformation, and three years where Deficiency matches Earth's transformation. This totals twenty-four years.
Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren represent Excessive transformations. Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui represent Deficient transformations. Zi, Yin, Chen, Wu, Shen, Xu represent Excessive Qi. Chou, Mao, Si, Wei, You, Hai represent Deficient Qi. In the sixty-year cycle, among the Excessive and Deficient years matching Heaven and Earth's transformations, there are twenty-four in total. This summarizes the categories; details follow below.
The Yellow Emperor said: I wish to hear what you mean?
I wish to hear about the years of Excess and Deficiency.
Qibo said: In Jia Chen and Jia Xu years, Tai Gong (Excessive Earth Yun) adds below to Taiyin (Wet Earth). In Ren Yin and Ren Shen years, Tai Jue (Excessive Wood Yun) adds below to Jueyin (Wind Wood). In Geng Zi and Geng Wu years, Tai Shang (Excessive Metal Yun) adds below to Yangming (Dry Metal). Such cases occur in three sets.
Since the Emperor wished to hear about Earth-matching transformations, we first discuss Wu Yun matching Earth. In Jia Chen and Jia Xu years, Jia indicates Excessive Earth Yun, hence Tai Gong. Chen and Xu have Taiyang Si Tian, so Taiyin Wet Earth is in Quan, adding below to Taiyin. In Ren Yin and Ren Shen years, Ren indicates Excessive Wood Yun, hence Tai Jue. Ren Shen has Shaoyang Si Tian, so Jueyin Wind Wood is in Quan, adding below to Jueyin. In Geng Zi and Geng Wu years, Geng indicates Excessive Metal Yun, hence Tai Shang. Zi and Wu have Shaoyin Si Tian, so Yangming Dry Metal is in Quan, adding below to Yangming. One is Tai Gong Earth Yun matching Taiyin's Earth transformation. One is Tai Jue Wood Yun matching Jueyin's Earth transformation. One is Tai Shang Metal Yun matching Yangming's Earth transformation. These are the three years of Excess matching Earth transformation, as such.
In Gui Si and Gui Hai years, Shao Zheng (Deficient Fire Yun) adds below to Shaoyang (Ministerial Fire). In Xin Chou and Xin Wei years, Shao Yu (Deficient Water Yun) adds below to Taiyang (Cold Water). In Gui Mao and Gui You years, Shao Zheng (Deficient Fire Yun) adds below to Shaoyin (Ruler Fire). Such cases occur in three sets.
In Gui Si and Gui Hai years, Gui indicates Deficient Fire Yun, hence Shao Zheng. Si and Hai have Jueyin Si Tian, so Shaoyang Ministerial Fire is in Quan, adding below to Shaoyang. In Xin Chou and Xin Wei years, Xin indicates Deficient Water Yun, hence Shao Yu. Chou and Wei have Taiyin Si Tian, so Taiyang Cold Water is in Quan, adding below to Taiyang. In Gui Mao and Gui You years, Gui indicates Deficient Fire Yun, hence Shao Zheng. Gui You has Yangming Si Tian, so Shaoyin Ruler Fire is in Quan, adding below to Shaoyin. One is Shao Zheng Fire Yun matching Shaoyang's Earth transformation. One is Shao Yu Water Yun matching Taiyang's Earth transformation. One is Shao Zheng Fire Yun matching Shaoyin's Earth transformation. These are the three years of Deficiency matching Earth transformation, as such.
In Wu Zi and Wu Wu years, Tai Zheng (Excessive Fire Yun) adds above to Shaoyin (Ruler Fire). In Wu Yin and Wu Shen years, Tai Zheng (Excessive Fire Yun) adds above to Shaoyang (Ministerial Fire). In Bing Chen and Bing Xu years, Tai Yu (Excessive Water Yun) adds above to Taiyang (Cold Water). Such cases occur in three sets.
In Wu Zi and Wu Wu years, Wu indicates Excessive Fire Yun, hence Tai Zheng. Zi and Wu have Shaoyin Si Tian, so it adds above to Shaoyin. In Wu Yin and Wu Shen years, Wu indicates Excessive Fire Yun, hence Tai Zheng. Yin and Shen have Shaoyang Si Tian, so it adds above to Shaoyang. In Bing Chen and Bing Xu years, Bing indicates Excessive Water Yun, hence Tai Yu. Chen and Xu have Taiyang Si Tian, so it adds above to Taiyang. One is Tai Zheng Fire Yun matching Shaoyin's Heaven transformation. One is Tai Zheng Fire Yun matching Shaoyang's Heaven transformation. One is Tai Yu Water Yun matching Taiyang's Heaven transformation. These are the three years of Excess matching Heaven transformation, as such.
In Ding Si and Ding Hai years, Shao Jue (Deficient Wood Yun) adds above to Taiyin (Wet Earth). In Yi Mao and Yi You years, Shao Shang (Deficient Metal Yun) adds above to Yangming (Dry Metal). In Ji Chou and Ji Wei years, Shao Gong (Deficient Earth Yun) adds above to Taiyin (Wet Earth). Such cases occur in three sets.
In Ding Si and Ding Hai years, Ding indicates Deficient Wood Yun, hence Shao Jue. Si and Hai have Jueyin Si Tian, so it adds above to Jueyin. In Yi Mao and Yi You years, Yi indicates Deficient Metal Yun, hence Shao Shang. Mao and You have Yangming Si Tian, so it adds above to Yangming. In Ji Chou and Ji Wei years, Ji indicates Deficient Earth Yun, hence Shao Gong. Chou and Wei have Taiyin Si Tian, so it adds above to Taiyin. One is Shao Jue Wood Yun matching Jueyin's Heaven transformation. One is Shao Shang Metal Yun matching Yangming's Heaven transformation. One is Shao Gong Earth Yun matching Taiyin's Heaven transformation. These are the three years of Deficiency matching Heaven transformation, as such.
Except for these twenty-four years, there is no addition (Jia) or superposition (Lin).
Of the aforementioned twenty-four years, those matching Earth transformation are called "adding below" (Xia Jia); those matching Heaven transformation are called "superposing above" (Shang Lin). These twenty-four years have addition and superposition. Except for these twenty-four years, the remaining thirty-six years have neither addition nor superposition.
The Yellow Emperor said: What does "Jia" (Addition) mean?
Those matching Earth transformation are all called "adding below," so he asks what "Jia" means.
Qibo said: Addition in Excess is called Tong Tian Fu (Same as Heaven Sign). Addition in Deficiency is called Tong Sui Hui (Same as Year Meeting).
When Yun matches Si Tian, it is called Tian Fu. When Yun matches the Year Branch, it is called Sui Hui. Heaven Qi is Yang, and Yang governs excess. Therefore, whenever an Excessive year has addition below, it is equivalent to Tong Tian Fu. Earth Qi is Yin, and Yin governs deficiency. Therefore, whenever a Deficient year has addition below, it is equivalent to Tong Sui Hui.
The Yellow Emperor said: What does "Lin" (Superposition) mean?
Asking about Shang Lin due to Xia Jia.
Qibo said: Both Excess and Deficiency are called Tian Fu. However, the movement of changes varies in degree, the symptoms vary in severity, and life and death vary in timing.
When Yun matches Heaven transformation, it is called Shang Lin. Heaven Qi is Yang, and Yang governs excess. Therefore, regardless of whether the year is Excess or Deficient, whenever Heaven Qi superposes above, it is called Tian Fu. Within a year, the extent of change varies, symptoms vary in severity, and life and death vary in early or late occurrence.
The Yellow Emperor said: You spoke of "avoiding Cold with Cold and avoiding Heat with Heat." I do not yet understand this. I wish to hear what "avoiding" (Yuan) means.
If medicine is used, why avoid? Hence, he asks what "avoiding" means.
Qibo said: Do not use Hot medicine during Hot times; do not use Cold medicine during Cold times. Following this brings harmony; violating it brings disease. One must revere and avoid them. This is referred to as the "Six Positions of Seasonal Qi."
"Avoiding" means not violating. For example, if Hot medicine is appropriate for a Cold disease, one should not violate Hot times (i.e., not use Hot medicine excessively during Hot times). If Cold medicine is appropriate for a Heat disease, one should not violate Cold times (i.e., not use Cold medicine excessively during Cold times). Not violating is following; violating is opposing. Thus, following brings harmony, and opposing brings disease. Following initially brings harmony; opposing leads to disease. This is why dietary choices should follow the same method. The use of Cold, Heat, Warm, and Cool must be revered and avoided. Cold, Heat, Warm, and Cool are the Qi of the four seasons. The Qi of the four seasons is the Qi of the six positions. Revering and avoiding them is what is meant by the "Six Positions of Seasonal Qi."
The Yellow Emperor said: What about Warm and Cool?
Only Heat and Cold were mentioned, not Warm and Cool. Warm and Cool are milder than Heat and Cold, so he asks about them again.
Qibo said: If the governing Qi is Heat, do not use Heat excessively (do not violate). If the governing Qi is Cold, do not use Cold excessively (do not violate). If the governing Qi is Cool, do not use Cool excessively (do not violate). If the governing Qi is Warm, do not use Warm excessively (do not violate). If the intercalary Qi matches the main Qi, do not violate. If it differs from the main Qi, slightly violate. This is called the "Four Feared Ones"; one must carefully examine them.
Each of the six positions in a year governs its own Qi. "Do not use Heat during Heat, do not use Cold during Cold" means: if the governing Qi is Heat, do not use Heat too excessively, thereby not violating its Heat. If the governing Qi is Cold, do not use Cold too excessively, thereby not violating its Cold. The same applies to Warm and Cool. Thus, if the governing Qi is Cool, do not use Cool too excessively, thereby not violating its Cool. If the governing Qi is Warm, do not use Warm too excessively, thereby not violating its Warm. Throughout the year, there is the correct Qi of the ruling season and the intercalary Qi of addition. If the intercalary Qi matches the main Qi, its Qi is overly abundant, so do not violate it. If the intercalary Qi differs from the main Qi, its Qi is not abundant, so slightly violate it. "Slightly violating" means using Cold, Heat, Warm, or Cool without excess. These Cold, Heat, Warm, and Cool are called the "Four Feared Ones"; one must carefully examine them and not exceed limits.
The Yellow Emperor said: Excellent. What about those who violate [the rules]?
What does "slightly violating if differing from the main Qi" entail?
Qibo said: If Heaven Qi is contrary to the season, one can treat according to the season. If it overcomes the main Qi, one can violate [the rule], aiming for balance, without exceeding limits. This is called "Evil Qi Overcoming Normally." Thus it is said: Do not lose Heavenly Trust, do not go against the suitability of Qi, do not assist its overcoming, do not sponsor its rebounding. This is called Supreme Governance.
"Heaven Qi" refers to the correct Qi of the ruling season. "Contrary to season" means it should be Hot but is Cold, or should be Cold but is Hot. "Treat according to the season" means: if it should be Hot but is Cold, treat the Cold with Hot; if it should be Cold but is Hot, treat the Hot with Cold. "Overcoming the main Qi" means the added intercalary Qi overcomes the main Qi of the ruling season. For example, if the main Qi is Cold, but the intercalary Qi overcomes it with Heat; or if the main Qi is Heat, but the intercalary Qi overcomes it with Cold. In such cases, violation is permissible. One can violate the main Qi's Cold to clear Heat, or violate the main Qi's Heat to warm Cold. However, all aim for balance and must not exceed limits. This clarifies that overcoming the main Qi is called "Evil Qi Overcoming Normally." "Evil Qi" refers to the intercalary Qi. "Overcoming normally" means overcoming the main Qi. Thus, the general principle states: Do not lose Heavenly Trust (the trust of the four seasons must not be lost); do not go against the suitability of Qi (the suitability of the Six Qi must not be opposed); do not assist its overcoming (when overcoming adds upon overcoming, do not assist the rebounding); do not sponsor its rebounding (after stagnation comes rebounding, do not aid it). Being able to do this is called the utmost governance of peace and harmony.
The Yellow Emperor said: Excellent. As Wu Yun moves and governs the annual cycle, is there a constant number?
The movement of Wu Yun and Liu Qi governs the sixty-year cycle. Is there a constant number?
Qibo said: I will describe it in order.
From here on, the discussion concerns the sixty-year cycle of Wu Yun and Liu Qi, which is a constant number.
In Jia Zi and Jia Wu years: Upper is Shaoyin Fire, Middle is Tai Gong Earth Yun, Lower is Yangming Metal. Heat transformation is 2, Rain transformation is 5, Dryness transformation is 4. This is called the Day of Proper Transformation. Its treatment involves Salty-Cold for the Upper, Bitter-Hot for the Middle, and Sour-Hot for the Lower. This is the suitability of medicine and food.
Zi and Wu combine. Chou and Wei combine. Yin and Shen combine. Mao and You combine. Chen and Xu combine. Si and Hai combine. Zi and Wu have Shaoyin Si Tian. Thus, in Jia Zi and Jia Wu years, the Upper is Shaoyin Fire. Jia indicates Excessive Earth Yun, so the Middle is Tai Gong Earth Yun. With Shaoyin above, Yangming is below, so the Lower is Yangming Metal. Fire Qi is above, so Heat transformation is 2. Earth Yun is in the middle, so Rain transformation is 5. Five is the generating number of Earth. Earth always uses the generating number; subsequent texts follow this example. Metal Qi is below, so Dryness transformation is 4. One, two, three, four, five are the generating numbers of the Five Elements. Six, seven, eight, nine, ten are the completing numbers. The text below states: Excessive movements use completing numbers; deficient movements use generating numbers. Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren (Excessive) use the completing numbers of the Five Elements. Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui (Deficient) use the generating numbers of the Five Elements. Earth does not distinguish between Excess and Deficiency; it always uses the generating number. However, this applies only to the Middle transformation Yun; the transforming Qi of Si Tian and Qi in Quan is different. Earth always uses the generating number, both above and below. These Heat, Rain, and Dryness transformations, along with the Upper, Middle, and Lower Qi, are called the Day of Proper Transformation. For the Upper Heat, Salty-Cold (Water flavor) is suitable to treat it. For the Middle Dampness, Bitter-Hot (Fire flavor) is suitable to treat it. For the Lower Dryness, Sour-Hot (Wood flavor) is suitable to treat it. Metal Qi is cool and dry, governing contraction, so Sour-Hot is suitable. This is the suitability of medicine and food.
In Yi Chou and Yi Wei years: Upper is Taiyin Earth, Middle is Shao Shang Metal Yun, Lower is Taiyang Water. Heat and Cold transformations of Overcoming and Rebound are the same. This is called the Day of Evil Qi Transformation. Disaster occurs in Palace 7. Dampness transformation is 5, Clarity transformation is 4, Cold transformation is 6. This is called the Day of Proper Transformation. Its treatment involves Bitter-Hot for the Upper, Sour-Mild for the Middle, and Sweet-Hot for the Lower. This is the suitability of medicine and food.
Chou and Wei have Taiyin Si Tian. Thus, in Yi Chou and Yi Wei years, the Upper is Taiyin Earth. Yi indicates Deficient Metal Yun, so the Middle is Shao Shang Metal Yun. With Taiyin above, Taiyang is below, so the Lower is Taiyang Water. Generally, Excessive movements have no Overcoming and Rebound; Deficient movements have Overcoming and Rebound. Subsequent texts follow this example. Metal Yun is deficient. Initially, the Heat transformation of Fire overcomes, followed by the...
