The formula for treating eye diseases by the Immortal Lü Dongbin. There was a person who loved wandering in clouds and waters; whenever he saw them, he would invite them to his small pavilion to entertain them, offering worship to the statue of Chunyang (Lü Dongbin) with great reverence. One day, a guest arrived, wearing a square robe, and said to him, "Your eyes are dim and tearful; you should take Wulong Wan (Black Dragon Pill) to be cured." Thus, following the prescription to prepare and take the medicine, after more than a month, his vision was restored. He could see objects at night, and at the age of ninety, his hearing and sight remained sharp, and his spirit was as vigorous as that of a young man.
Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) [only those from Huaiqing are best], Chuanhuajiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) [those from Sichuan that are closed and not split should not be used].
These three herbs are taken in equal amounts, ground into powder, and made into pills with refined honey, sized like wu-tzu (seeds of the Chinese parasol tree). Take fifty pills on an empty stomach with salted rice water; this can be taken regularly for a long time.
An official, after pardoning a prisoner who later died of illness, suffered from an eye disease caused by internal cataracts. Grieving for over a year after the loss of his son, one midnight while sitting alone sighing, he heard a rustling sound under the steps. The official asked who it was, and the voice replied, "I am the prisoner you once saved; I have come to repay your kindness and will tell you a formula."
Chuanhuanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) [one liang], Baiyanggan (Ovis Hepatis) [one liver, remove fascia, avoid iron utensils].
Mix the Huanglian powder with the liver in a mortar, grind until extremely fine, and make into pills sized like wu-tzu. Take thirty pills each time with boiling water, continuing for five doses. After speaking, the figure suddenly disappeared. The official prepared and took the medicine according to this prescription, and within a few days, his vision was restored. This formula can treat all kinds of eye diseases. Avoid pork, cold water, and rooster.
A man whose father had passed away served his mother, traveling everywhere with her, showing utmost filial piety. During the Chunxi era, while residing in Qinzhou, he contracted red-eye disease and ate crab, which led to internal cataracts. Various doctors were ineffective. He usually knew how to chant the Prajnaparamita Sutra silently, so he went out begging in the streets, bringing all the money he earned back to his mother. This lasted for five years. Suddenly, one night he dreamed of a monk with long eyebrows and a large nose, holding a bowl containing water, instructing him to scoop it up to wash his eyes. The monk also told him, "When you go, you should take Yanggan Wan (Sheep Liver Pill)." Thinking him to be the Buddha, he bowed and begged for the formula, and the monk bestowed it upon him.
Yemingcha (Stercoris Caprae), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Muzei (Equiseti Herba), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum).
Take one liang of each, grind together into powder. Use four liang of black sheep liver, boil until soft, mash into a paste, mix with the medicine powder, and further pound into pills sized like wu-tzu. Take fifty pills after meals with boiling water. After taking the medicine for one hundred days, his vision was restored. He returned home with his mother; after his mother's death, he abandoned his family and entered the Daoist path. Eventually, he attained immortality and departed.
