A question was posed: "You state that external diseases are treated according to categories, showing diligent intent and benevolent care. In ancient texts regarding external diseases, there is mention of 'Liu' (Tumors). It is unknown where they originate or how they form. They do not present with pain, itching, or suffering, nor do they involve disasters of cold, heat, pus, or blood. They appear suddenly, as if an object were lodged within, causing inconvenience to the person. What causes this?" The answer is: "Liu refers to the flow, accumulation, gathering, and eventual formation of pathogenic factors. It is formed by the stagnation of Qi and the coagulation of turbid blood within the body. Just as plums and peaches differ in shape, and melons and gourds vary in name and color, tumors also vary. Ancient texts classify them into six types: Gu Liu (Bone Tumor), Zhi Liu (Fat Tumor), Nong Liu (Pus Tumor), Xue Liu (Blood Tumor), Jin Liu (Sinew Tumor), and Shi Liu (Stone Tumor). These names are derived from the specific material nature found within the tumor. The current thirteen types illustrated are categorized by their location of origin; the substances lodged within these tumors are merely aggregations of the aforementioned six types."
Another question arose: "You are correct. Is there a method to treat them?" The answer is: "All diseases originate internally and manifest externally. In ancient times, physicians used ointments to treat internal origins and acupuncture/moxibustion to treat external manifestations, both aiming to expel pathogens. Since tumors are formed by stagnant Qi and turbid blood, surely there are medicines to dispel them? By administering herbal decoctions internally and applying ointments externally, attacking from both inside and out, and treating both interior and exterior simultaneously, the tumor can be cured. One must absolutely avoid reckless use of needles, knives, hooks, or cutting, lest the pus and blood collapse uncontrollably, leading to premature death. Be cautious! Be cautious!"
