Shehuang (Calamine, three liang for large pieces: place in a new iron pot, heat in charcoal fire until the calamine and pot are equally red-hot, remove pot with tongs, pour calamine into two sheng of strong vinegar, cool, remove, and grind until extremely fine and silent—this is called "Han Shi") Yuyuliang (Haematitum, three liang: mix with five liang of Zhenzhensha, wash clean with water and drain, stir-fry in a pot until dry, add Yuyuliang, boil together in two sheng of rice vinegar until dry, then place pot and medicine in charcoal fire until red-hot, pour onto clean brick ground, cool, and grind until no sound is produced)
These three substances form the main ingredients. Subsequently, add the following herbs according to the patient's deficiency or excess. Treating water qi usually involves purgative methods, but these three main ingredients in this formula are not comparable to Daji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix), Gansui (Kansui Radix), or Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos); furthermore, the following herbs support healthy qi, making it safe for frail elderly patients.
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, baked) Fuling (Poria) Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, soaked in wine) Baidoukou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus, processed) Tuhuixiang (Foeniculi Fructus, stir-fried) Pengzhu (Curcumae Rhizoma, processed) Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed) Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, pith removed) Jingsanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma, processed) Baijili (Tribuli Fructus) Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateralis Radix) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, soaked in wine overnight, each half liang; frail/elderly use full half liang, robust persons reduce dosage)
Grind the above into fine powder, mix thoroughly. Use a steamed dough cake soaked in hot water, wrung out to remove moisture, to bind the powder. Pound again until extremely uniform, and form into pills sized like wutong seeds. Take thirty to fifty pills before meals, washed down with warm wine or plain water. Salt must be strictly forbidden, even a trace amount cannot enter the mouth; if flavor is lacking, after the water disease subsides, a little vinegar can be used for seasoning. If one cannot abstain from salt, do not take this; if one truly wishes to cure the disease, strict salt abstinence is essential. Upon taking the medicine, water dampness will quickly exit through urination without damaging the zang-fu organs. After the illness resolves, take three times daily, assisted by mild herbs that tonify qi and blood. This is truly a miraculous formula.
