(Attachment: Itch caused by body deficiency)
The Great Wind disease (Da Feng Bing) is contracted from the killing winds of heaven and earth. The ancients called it Leprosy (Li Feng), because this wind is fierce, violent, and terrifying. When a person contracts this disease, the pathology can be located in the upper or lower parts of the body. For pathology in the upper part, Zui Xian San (Intoxicating Immortal Powder) is used to induce the discharge of foul saliva and bad blood from the gum spaces. For pathology in the lower part, Tong Tian Zai Zao San (Sky-Penetrating Rebirth Powder) is used to induce the discharge of filth from the anus. Although the pathways of discharge differ between upper and lower, they all pertain to the Yangming Meridian (Stomach and Large Intestine channels). Those treating this disease must understand this principle. Observe the papules and sores on the skin: if they appear first in the upper part or are more numerous there, the pathology is in the upper part; if they appear first in the lower part or are more numerous there, the pathology is in the lower part; if both upper and lower are affected simultaneously, the pathology involves both. The Yangming Meridian comprises the Stomach and Large Intestine, which receive everything without discrimination; this is how the wind pathogen enters the human body. If Qi is affected, the disease manifests mostly in the upper part; if Blood is affected, it manifests mostly in the lower part; if both Qi and Blood are affected, the condition is severe. Unless the physician possesses divine skill and the patient has an iron will, few can escape this suffering. Whether the disease originates from above or below, it is treatable. People often neglect it because the progression seems slow, but even with treatment according to these methods, the disease can be completely eradicated. However, if one cannot abstain from rich foods and sexual activity, relapse is inevitable. Once relapsed, it becomes incurable. I once treated five patients, and only one woman recovered, because she was extremely poor and widowed, having no access to forbidden delicacies. The other four relapsed after three or two years. Sun Simiao said, "I have treated four or five hundred people, yet not one escaped death." This is because they could not be cured, as no one could observe the dietary and behavioral taboos. This woman, besides her primary illness, took over a hundred doses of Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) with modifications for over half a year before her menstruation resumed and she achieved complete recovery.
Zui Xian San (Intoxicating Immortal Powder)
Sesamum indicum Seed (Huma Ren), Arctii Fructus (Niubangzi), Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi), Lycii Fructus (Gouqizi) (each 1.5 taels, stir-fried together until black), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Trichosanthis Radix (Gualou Gen), Tauschi Tribuli Fructus (Bajili), Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Kushen) (equal amounts).
Grind the above herbs into fine powder. For every 1.5 tael of powder, mix in 2 qian of Calomel (Qingfen). Adults take 1 qian per dose, taken on an empty stomach, at noon, and before bed, mixed with tea water. Within five to seven days after taking the medicine, foul saliva should first flow out from the teeth gaps, the whole body will feel painful, and the patient will feel dizzy and intoxicated, ending when foul stool is passed. Adjust the dosage according to the patient's size and deficiency/excess conditions. For severe and acute cases, use Zaizao San to purge first, then nourish and restore strength before administering this medicine. One must avoid salt, soy sauce, vinegar, various meats, fishy smells, pepper spices, fruits, roasted, grilled, and fried foods, as well as eggplants. Only light congee and cooked vegetables are suitable. Additionally, eat Wagao Shehua Snake (Zaocys dhumnades) cooked in light wine to assist the medicinal power.
Zaizao San (Rebirth Powder)
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 1 tael), Gleditsiae Spina (Zaojiaoci, 1.5 taels, those that grew alone for years and are large and black), Curcumae Aromatae Rhizoma (Yujin, 0.5 tael, raw), Phitomyza Semen (Qian Niu Zi, head powder 6 qian, half raw half stir-fried).
Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose (some say 5 qian), mixed with cold wine before bed (some say take facing east before sunset). Prepare a clean bucket to catch the excretion of worms. If the worms are black, the disease has persisted for many years; if red, the disease is recent. Administer another dose after three or four days until no more worms are discharged, indicating the root is removed. Afterwards, regulate with Tong Sheng San. Bleeding can be induced by pricking Weizhong (BL40) with a three-edged needle. One must never eat beef, horse, donkey, or mule meat for life. Sexual intercourse is strictly prohibited; violators will surely die.
Huang Jing Wan (Polygonatum Pill)
Xanthii Folium (Canger Ye), Lemna Minoris Herba (Zibei Fuping), Arctii Fructus (Dali Zi) (equal amounts), Zaocys Dhumnades Meat (Wushe Rou, half soaked in wine, skin and bones removed), Polygonati Rhizoma (Huangjing, amount double that of the previous three herbs, crushed raw to extract juice, mixed with the four herbs, ground fine, and dried).
Grind into powder, make pills with dough made from Medicated Leaven (Shen Qu) the size of white mustard seeds. Take 50-70 pills per dose, washed down with warm wine. Another formula adds stir-fried Phellodendri Cortex (Baipi), Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Sheng Dihuang), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma cum Gustibus (Gancao Jie).
Another Formula
Xanthii Folium (Canger Ye), Lemna Minoris Herba (Fuping), Arctii Fructus (Shuniuzi), Zaocys Dhumnades Meat (Wushe Rou) (equal amounts).
Stir-fry the above herbs with Dou Lin Jiu (Bean淋 Wine), grind into powder. Take 1-2 qian per dose, mixed with Dou Lin Jiu.
For treating Leprosy with a large and deficient pulse.
Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Kushen, 7.5 qian), Xanthium (Canger), Arctii Fructus (Niubangzi), Alcohol-steamed Phellodendri Cortex (Jiu Zheng Bai, or Jiu Bai, each 2 liang), Polygonati Rhizoma (Huangjing), Lemna Minoris Herba (Fuping) (each 1 liang).
Grind into powder. Boil Zaocys Dhumnades Meat (Wushe Rou) in wine; if snake is unavailable, black carp can be used. Make into pills. Wait until the pulse becomes solid/strong, then use Tong Tian Zaizao San.
Treating Leprosy
Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Qianghuo, Fangfeng, Chenpi, Gancao.
Another Formula
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Realgar (Xionghuang, 3 liang).
Grind into powder. Boil leaves of Cinnamomum Camphora (Zhangshu Ye) strongly to make a decoction, steam and wash the affected area with the medicine added.
[Appendix] This disease is not limited to the Lung organ. Because it manifests on the nose, it is commonly called Lung Wind (Fei Feng). Swelling, redness, and enlargement of the nasal tip leading to sores result from blood following Qi transformation. When Qi fails to distribute, Blood gathers; when Blood gathers, flesh rots and worms are generated. The generation of worms is governed by the Jueyin Liver channel. Use medicine to slowly disperse it. Decoct Shengma Tang from Ju Fang (Imperial Formulary) to administer Xie Qing Wan. Treat other symptoms according to their respective meridians.
