Cheng, aged eight. Presented with cough and asthma (wheezing). Urine was clear and profuse. This was caused by the failure of Lung Qi to descend.
Prescription: Sangbai Pi (Bark of Mulberry Root, 1.5 qian), Xingren (Apricot Seed, 3 qian), Zhuling (Polyporus, 1 qian), Tingli Zi (Seed of Lepidium Fruit, 0.5 qian), Dafupi (Pericarp of Areca Nut, 1.5 qian), Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis, 1 qian), Houpo (Bark of Magnolia Officinalis, 1 qian), Fulingpi (Exocarp of Watermelon Peel, 1.5 qian), Chuantongcao (Stem of Tetrapanax Papyriferus, 1 qian).
Yang, aged seven or eight, an elderly person. Inhalation sounds very rapid. Movement immediately triggers wheezing. Accompanied by phlegm-cough. Worsens in the evening, sweats in the morning. Urine is short and frequent. This belongs to the depletion of Kidney Yin fluids, and the vital energy of the Yuan Sea (Mingmen) is also scarce.
This is due to the scattering of Qi and loss of grasping function.
Prescription: Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root, 4 qian), Bei Wuwei Zi (Schisandra Berry, 1 qian), Qianshi (Euryale Seed, 2 qian), Yurou Tan (Charred Cornus Fruit, 2 qian), Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, 0.5 qian), Shanyao (Dioscorea Rhizome, 2 qian), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, 2 qian), Ziyi Hetaorou (Walnut Kernel with Purple Skin, 5 qian), Buguzhi (Psoralea Fruit, 0.8 qian).
Xu, aged thirty-nine. Kidney fails to grasp and store. Yin deficiency leads to wheezing and choking cough.
Prescription: Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root, 4 qian), Yurou (Cornus Fruit, 2 qian), Hulian (Lotus Seed from Hu Lake, 3 qian), Qing Ejiao (Clear Donkey-hide Gelatin, 2 qian), Shanyao (Dioscorea Rhizome, 2 qian), Qianshi (Euryale Seed, 2 qian), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, 1 qian), Dancai Jiao (Gelatin from Dried Mussel, 2 qian).
Chen, aged fifty-eight. During the sprouting of Spring Yang, at the late night hours, rebellious Qi rises upward. Pulse on the right Cun position is slippery and soft; left pulse is fine and choppy. The reason is that asthma in the Lung is excess, while in the Kidney it is deficiency. The Lung governs exhalation, and the Kidney governs inhalation. Both Lung and Kidney are declining, losing control over exhalation and inhalation. Phlegm color is purplish-purple, also indicating Qi deficiency and scanty fluids. A prescription is proposed for review.
Prescription: Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root, 4 qian), Beishashen (Glehnia Root, 3 qian), Zhi Shiying (Fluorite, ground, 3 qian), Yuanwu Ban (Tortoise Plastron, fried, 3 qian), Huainiuxi (Achyranthes Root, stir-fried with salt water, 2 qian), Baomu Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Jian Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, heart removed, 1.5 qian), Zhen Chuanbei (Fritillaria Bulb, heart removed and ground, 2 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Root, decocted separately and added, 0.5 qian).
Chu, aged fifty-two. Pulse is small, tongue coating is white. Hiccups with Qi rushing upward. Both pulses are slightly choppy. Stool is loose and watery. This belongs to Spleen-Stomach Yang deficiency, with turbid Yin attacking upwards. A prescription is proposed for correction by superior experts.
Prescription: Dingtou Daizhe (Ochre Hematite, with nail-like protrusions), Chao Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, stir-fried), Dingxiangpi (Clove Bark), Dan Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, light), Dan Wuyu (Evodia Fruit, light), Shidi (Persimmon Calyx), Fuling (Poria), Chao Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper, stir-fried).
Cai, aged forty-six. Pathogenic factors have departed, healthy Qi is weak. Hiccups sound abnormal. Throat always feels uncomfortable. It is reported that taking Lizhong Tang provided no benefit. Clear Yang must be able to expand and unfold, then one can feel open and relaxed.
Prescription: Pipaye (Loquat Leaf, 3 qian), Chuan Chuanbei (Fritillaria Bulb, stir-fried, 2 qian), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, 1 qian), Chao Xiangchi (Fermented Soybean, stir-fried, 1.5 qian), Gualoupi (Peel of Trichosanthes Fruit, 1 qian), Chuantongcao (Stem of Tetrapanax Papyriferus, 1 qian), Yujin (Curcuma Root, 1 qian), Xingren (Apricot Seed, 3 qian), Ziwan (Aster Root, 1 qian).
Li, aged twenty-five. Reviewed the cooling and resolving formula previously taken. Body heat has stopped, thirst has also decreased. This is a sign of pathogen resolution. However, Stomach Yang is exhausted and fatigued, leading to a faint pulse, sweating, hiccups, and loose stools. Fire signs are prominent. Tentatively prescribing Lizhong Tang removing Gancao and Baizhu, adding Dingxiang, Wuyu, Chuanjiao, and Fuling.
