In cases of tidal fever, spontaneous sweating, delirium, and constipation, do not misdiagnose this as Yangming disease (a stage in cold damage pathology characterized by heat entering the fu organs). In cases of dry mouth, dry tongue, and sore throat, do not misdiagnose this as Shaoyin disease (a category of disease involving heart-kidney deficiency or yin deficiency with fire hyperactivity). The tidal fever, spontaneous sweating, and delirium occurring postpartum all belong to yang deficiency; this is completely different from the pathogenic heat entering the fu organs in Yangming disease. Dry mouth, dry tongue, and sore throat are mostly caused by blood exhaustion; this is vastly different from the pathogenic heat cauterizing the kidney in Shaoyin disease. As for constipation, it is not due to pathogenic heat accumulating in the stomach causing dry feces. How can one rashly discuss using purgative methods? Generally, postpartum fatigue and overwork injure the spleen qi, making transportation and transformation difficult. Coupled with internal depletion of body fluids, nineteen out of twenty patients suffer from this. It is advisable to administer Yangzheng Tongyou Tang (Nourishing Rightness and Unblocking Obstruction Decoction) to moisten the intestines, thereby ensuring no other complications arise.
Prescription: Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome) 2 qian, Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) 6 qian, Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) 5 fen, Renshen (Ginseng Root) 1 qian, Huangqi (Astragalus Root, raw) 2 qian, Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel) 1 qian, Taoren (Peach Seed, skin and tip removed, crushed) 11 grains, Hei Zhima (Black Sesame Seed, stir-fried and crushed) 2 qian, Roucongrong (Cistanche Stem) 1 qian (washed with wine).
Take the above herbs, add two cups of water, decoct until reduced to seven-tenths, and take warm.
For excessive sweating, add Mahuanggen (Ephedra Root) 5 fen. (Note: Mahuang induces sweating, while Mahuanggen stops sweating; use the root.) For dry mouth, add Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) 1 qian. For abdominal fullness, dry throat, and constipation, add Zhiqiao (Bitter Orange Fruit) 6 fen. For excessive sweating, delirium, and solid stool, add Fushen (Poria with Hostwood) 2 qian, Chao Suanzaoren (Ziziphus Seed, stir-fried) 1 qian, Baiziren (Biota Seed) 1 qian, and Sheng Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, raw) 2 qian.
When qi and blood suddenly exhaust, the limbs lose nourishment, leading to sudden locking of the jaw, muscle spasms, and convulsions of both hands, resembling stroke (pseudo-stroke). Or, if deficient fire floats upward accompanied by phlegm, do not erroneously use agents for treating wind and resolving phlegm, as this will exacerbate the deficiency. One should treat with Zirong Huoluo Tang (Nourishing Blood and Activating Collaterals Decoction).
