Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) [6 liang, nodes removed], Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, 桂枝) [2 liang], Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) [2 liang, honey-fried], Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) [40 seeds, skin and tips removed], Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) [3 liang, sliced], Jujubae Fructus (Dazao, 大枣) [12 pieces, split open],
Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) [size of a chicken egg, crushed].
The above seven ingredients are boiled in nine sheng of water. First, boil Ephedrae Herba until the volume reduces by two sheng, then remove the foam floating on the surface. Add the remaining herbs and boil to obtain three sheng of decoction. Strain the residue. Take one sheng warm. The goal is to induce a slight sweat. If sweating is excessive, apply warm powder to the body. If sweating occurs after the first dose, discontinue subsequent doses. Excessive sweating may lead to Wang Yang (collapse of Yang Qi), resulting in deficiency, aversion to wind, irritability, and insomnia.
One might ask: This formula treats conditions with a floating-tight pulse, headache, aversion to cold, body pain, absence of sweating, and irritability. There is no mention of the typical pulse for Wind Strike (Zhong Feng). However, *Shuchao Jin Yao* relies solely on the word "Wind Strike" at the beginning of the clause, claiming that the root is Wind Qi, while the apparent branch manifestation is Cold transformation, interpreting it as simultaneous contraction of Wind and Cold. This is erroneous. In fact, this is a syndrome where Wind is predominant and Cold is minor. If the root were truly Wind and the branch Cold, treatment must address the root; why double the dosage of Ephedrae Herba? *Annei Taifang* states: The key to this syndrome lies entirely in the phrase "absence of sweating." Cangji notes: If Wind injures the Wei (Defensive) level, there will be spontaneous sweating and aversion to wind; if Cold injures the Ying (Nutritive) level, there will be absence of sweating and wheezing. Here, "absence of sweating with irritability" indicates that although there may be slight sweating, it cannot penetrate out, thus generating irritability. This shows the presence of concurrent Wind syndrome, while the floating-tight pulse indicates Wind manifesting as a Cold pulse. Combined with aversion to cold and body pain, it is known that Cold is heavier than Wind. Therefore, within the formulas Mahuang Tang and Guizhi Tang, Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, 白芍) is removed, Ephedrae Herba is doubled, and Gypsum Fibrosum is added. If one does not strive for speed to expel the pathogen externally, the Wind will carry the force of Cold to attack internally, stirring up the Ministerial Fire (Xiang Huo) and Sovereign Fire (Jun Huo), causing the entire body to transform into Fire. Hence, it is necessary to double the use of Ephedrae Herba. Paeoniae Radix Alba is removed because, since sweat cannot penetrate out, there is no need to rely on it to protect the Ying level; the Heat is already constrained in the Pericardium (Xin Bao), so relieving irritability is urgent. Understanding this, not only can the principle of Da Qing Long Tang be comprehended, but its prescription can also be applied. Formulas such as Mahuang Xingren Gancao Shigao Tang, Yuebi Tang, Guizhi Er Yuebi Yi Tang, and Mahuang Shengma Tang can be selected according to the syndrome without obstruction.
