When a child has internal heat in the abdomen and is simultaneously exposed to external rain and dew, causing illness, it is termed Damp-Heat Syndrome (Shi Re Zheng). At the onset, there is fever and headache, often accompanied by irritability, thirst, dark and scanty or painful urination, and constipation. Ancient methods primarily prescribe Chai Ling Tang (Bupleurum and Poria Decoction), which includes Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Shang Qing Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root), with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Da Zao (Jujube) used as guides for decoction; it should be taken hot after water decoction.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] If a child has latent heat internally and contracts dampness externally, manifesting as surface heat without sweating, it is sufficient to promote the free flow of Qi in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), and the disease can be resolved. The prescription uses Bo He Jian (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) 5 fen, Lian Qiao Ke (Forsythiae Fructus) 1.5 qian, Dan Zhu Ye (Lophatheri Herba) 1 qian, Ku Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) 2 qian, Sheng Yi Mi (Coicis Semen) 1 qian, Liu Yi San (Six-to-One Powder) 3 qian, and Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medulla) 6 fen as guides.
If the child possesses robust Yuan Qi (Primal Qi) and suffers from prolonged constipation, add Sheng Jin Wen (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 3 fen.
When a child develops Cold-Damp Syndrome (Han Shi Zheng) due to playing with cold water or sitting/lying on damp ground, the initial symptoms include headache, heaviness of the body, and alternating chills and fever. Ancient methods primarily prescribe Wei Ling Tang (Stomach Regulating and Poria Decoction), which includes Bai Biao Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma processed with bran), Chao Bai Zhu (Stir-fried Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chuan Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Fu Ling (Poria), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root), Shang Qing Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus), with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) used as a guide.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] When a child is affected by external cold-dampness, Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and Bai Zhu are too cloying and stagnant, and Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) is too acrid and hot; neither is suitable for the initial treatment of children. One should only use Dong Sang Ye (Mori Folium) 1 qian, Chi Fu Ling (Red Poria) 2 qian, Guang Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum) 1.5 qian, Chao Bai Zhu (Stir-fried Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 1.5 qian, Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) 5 fen, with Sheng Jiang Pi (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens Pericarpium) 3 fen as a guide.
For children contracting cold-dampness complicated by vomiting, refer to the Cold-Dampness formula and add Huo Xiang (Agastaches Herba) 5 fen, Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) 3 fen, changing the guide to Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) one slice.
For children contracting cold-dampness complicated by diarrhea, refer to the Cold-Dampness formula, remove Sang Ye, and add Zhu Ling (Polyporus) and Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) each 2 qian.
For children contracting cold-dampness complicated by edema, use Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium), Fu Ling Pi (Poria Cocos Pericarpium), Zhi Sang Pi (Mori Cortex Preparatus), Guang Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Sheng Jiang Pi (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens Pericarpium) each 8 fen, Chao Bai Zhu (Stir-fried Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 2 qian, Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen) 5 fen, with Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medulla) ten stalks as a guide.
Jaundice caused by dampness in children, resulting from sitting/lying on damp ground and being soaked by fog, dew, and rainy weather, compounded by bathing where wind closes the pores, leading to dampness stagnating in the muscle and interstices, causes yellowing. Use Yin Chen Hao (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) 2 qian, Bai Biao Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma processed with bran) 1 qian, Bai Fu Ling (White Poria) 1.5 qian, Jie Zhu Ling (Knot Polyporus) 1 qian, Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) 5 fen, with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) one slice as a guide.
If a child's wound is immersed in water and dampness, leading to trismus (lockjaw) and rigid body extension, use Mu Li (Ostreae Concha) powdered and applied to the wound. Additionally, administer Mu Li powder 1 qian mixed with Gan Cao Tang (Licorice Decoction) for oral intake.
