Generally, if the body feels cold and the pulse is fine, while urination and defecation are normal, any disease occurring after illness or sweating accompanied by an inability to eat indicates a Deficiency pattern. If the body is hot and the pulse is large, with difficulty in urination and defecation, ability to eat but accompanied by stifling sensation and dizziness, and severe irritability, this indicates an Excess pattern. A face red like peach blossom color indicates interior fullness and exterior excess. Yellow and thick stools with clear urine indicate the separation of Yin and Yang with interior organ excess-heat. Not fearing heat in summer and not fearing cold in winter, with warm hands and feet, indicates robust constitutional Qi and harmony between the interior and exterior. A white complexion indicates deficiency and scarcity of Qi and Blood. Greenish stool indicates deficiency-cold of the Stomach and Large Intestine. Vomiting milk and food indicates cold in the chest and Stomach. Indigestion of milk and food indicates Spleen Deficiency. Fearing cold in winter and suffering from heatstroke in summer indicates weak constitution and simultaneous deficiency of both Yin and Yang. Among various symptoms, those that manifest outwardly are Deficiency; those that withdraw inward are Excess. Speaking indicates Deficiency; silence indicates Excess. A slow/relaxed course indicates Deficiency; an urgent course indicates Excess. A soggy pulse indicates Deficiency; a firm pulse indicates Excess. Itching indicates Deficiency; pain indicates Excess. Pain externally with comfort internally indicates exterior Excess and interior Deficiency; comfort externally with pain internally indicates exterior Deficiency and interior Excess. For various pains in the heart, abdomen, skin, and interior/exterior, if pressing stops the pain, it is Deficiency; if pressing aggravates the pain, it is Excess. Generally, skin Deficiency leads to heat; pulse Deficiency leads to palpitations/fright; interior Deficiency leads to heaviness; tendon Deficiency leads to spasms/cramps; bone Deficiency leads to pain; body Deficiency leads to abnormal mental state; intestinal Deficiency leads to [text unclear/missing]; when the Three Yang channels are Excess and the Three Yin channels are Deficient, there is no sweat; when the Three Yin channels are Excess and the Three Yang channels are Deficient, there is incessant sweating. In general, when inviting a physician, one must first examine whether the disease is new or old, and whether it is Deficient or Excess. For Deficiency, tonify the Mother organ; for Excess, drain the Child organ. For example, in cases of Lung Deficiency with Phlegm Excess, although purgation may be necessary, one should first strengthen the Spleen, and then drain the Lung. This is the principle. If Lung disease presents with Liver symptoms, such as grinding teeth and yawning, it is easy to treat, because Liver Deficiency fails to overcome the Lung. However, if there is staring eyes, loud crying, neck stiffness, and sudden oppression/dizziness, this indicates long-standing Lung Deficiency where the Liver's strong rigidity overcomes the Lung excessively; this is difficult to cure.
