Regulating Qi must use Muxiang; if Qi is excessive, it is not good. Tonifying Qi must use Renshen; if the Lung Meridian has heat, it is not appropriate. Phlegm-saliva diseases require Banxia; add Huangqin for heat, Fengxin Xing for wind. Cold phlegm in the chest causing fullness adds Baizhu and Chenpi. Epigastric pain uses Caodoukou; if accompanied by heat, add Huangqin and Huanglian. Eye pain uses Huanglian and Danggui. Palpitations and confusion use Fushen. Malaria uses Chaihu as sovereign. Blood pain uses Taoren and Sumu. Qi stagnation uses Qingpi and Zhike. If Zhike and Qingpi are used excessively, they may drain Yuan Qi, so change them. When using purely cold or purely hot medicines, Gancao must be used to moderate their force. When mixing cold and hot, it is also used to harmonize their nature without attack. Only in cases of fullness in the middle and inability to eat sweets, Gancao is avoided; clinical judgment is required.
Four Gentlemen Decoction Modification Song
Si Jun Tang (Renshen, Baizhu, Fuling, Gancao) tonifies the middle and boosts Qi, truly like a treasure. Adding Chenpi makes Yi Gong San; for Qi deficiency and spontaneous sweating, Huangqi is good. Adding Ju Pi and Banxia makes Liu Jun Tang, nothing beats it for strengthening the Spleen and harmonizing the Stomach. Pairing Xiang Fu and Sha ren digests food; for vomiting and Stomach cold, Ding Xiang and Huo Xiang are used. Shi Quan Da Bu Tang combines Si Wu Tang and Si Jun Tang, decocted with Huangqi, Rou Gui, Sheng Jiang, and Da Zao, nourishing Blood and Qi to strengthen the Spleen and Stomach, best for fatigue and weakness. Yang Rong Tang is the same as Shi Quan, but remove Chuanxiong and add Wuweizi, Yuanzhi, and Chenpi. Yin deficiency consumptive cough: decoct without Renshen; if urination is normal, avoid Baifuling. This is suitable for poor diet; internal injury from labor has immortal efficacy. The Spleen is the foundation of acquired constitution and mother of all things; modifications of formulas mostly benefit the Spleen.
Four Substances Decoction Modification Song
Si Wu Tang (Chuanxiong, Danggui, Baishao, Dihuang) is best for gynecological disorders, regulating menstruation, nourishing blood, and treating deficiency. It is unparalleled for pregnancy and childbirth. Shenzhu Fugan (Renshen, Baizhu, Fuling, Gancao) is called Bazhen Tang, swift in merit for Qi deficiency and blood weakness. Adding Rou Gui and Huangqi to Shi Quan greatly tonifies true Yuan and blood deficiency. Adding Renshen and Suye Yin makes Buxin Tang①; for Heart deficiency and blood scarcity causing dreams and fright, suitable after childbirth catching cold, no modification needed, miraculous as gods. Fever at dusk is originally Yin deficiency; adding Zhi Mu and Huangquan completely removes it②. Bone-steaving fever: Chaihu, Huangqi, and Biejia; Zhi Mu still requires Digupi. When a woman's menstruation arrives suddenly, resembling malaria, use the original formula against Xiao Chai Hu Tang③. During pregnancy, if menstrual blood flows frequently, add Ejiao and Ai Ye to stop leaking fetus④. Menstruation overdue indicates blood deficiency; double Shudi and add Jiuhuangqin. Menstruation pain due to Qi obstruction first occurs; Xiangfu, Ezhu, and Sanleng restore self-flow. Menstrual blood purple-black and early: add Huangqin, Huanglian, and Danpi. Cold-induced menstrual stasis with lower abdominal pain: do not hesitate with Taoren, E Zhu, and Xiangfu. Thin people with blood exhaustion and amenorrhea: add Taoren to this formula. Fat people with pale complexion belong to stasis-phlegm; combine with Er Chen Tang as one dose. Menstruation flowing too much: Chaihu, Huangqin, Huanglian, and Huangbai can be used together; especially add Chao Hei Jingjie, Shengma, Qianghuo, and Duhuo to lift Qi and ensure harmony. Adding Renshen and Baizhu to the formula can calm the fetus; fetal pain: Sharen, Zisu, and Ziyu open naturally. Abnormal abdominal enlargement due to fetal water disease, chest and diaphragm Qi reversal like a drum: decoct Li Yu Tang with Baizhu and Fuling, reduce Dihuang and Chuanxiong, add Sheng Jiang and Ju Pi. Fetal Qi insecurity with chest and diaphragm distension: Zhike, Sharen, and Zisu promptly diffuse and smooth. Pregnant woman's vexation called Zi Fan: add Fupi, Gancao, Zhizi, and Huangbai as superior. Chuanxiong and Danggui, two ingredients of Fo Shou San, decocted and taken before delivery can ensure birth. If difficult labor and fetus cannot come down, Cao Shuang and Baizhi go together. Jiang Tan treats postpartum heat well; pungent and sweet greatly tonify Heart blood; if sweating is excessive, reduce Chuanxiong in the formula; urgently take Renshen, Huangqi, and Fangfeng for quick results. Postpartum blood confusion leading to syncope, excessive lochia causing mental fatigue: Zelan, Chuanxiong, Renshen, Danggui, Jingjie, and Gancao; the powder is named Qing Hun San to stabilize blood syncope. Hei Shen San reduces Chuanxiong, adds Guigui, Hei Jiang, Zhi Gancao, Chao Hei Dou, and Sheng Puhuang; cleanly expelling the placenta removes abdominal pain; decocted with wine and child's urine, efficacy is extraordinary. How to handle little lochia postpartum? If no other illness and spirit is good, sudden chills, fever, and abdominal pain: selecting Hei Shen San is truly clever. Postpartum must use Si Wu Tang; generally, prepare Jiao Jiang for initial birth. Using Baishao postpartury damages Sheng Qi; rich and cloying, Shudi is disliked. Intestinal slipping: Dihuang and Danggui are both taboo. Excessive sweating: remove Chuanxiong. Blood deficiency abdominal pain: add Baishao. Modified Si Wu Tang secrets are deeply hidden.
Er Chen Tang Modification Song
Er Chen Tang (Chenpi, Banxia, Fuling, Gancao)① clears Qi and transforms phlegm, the ultimate treasure. If the diaphragm is not wide, add Zhishi and Jiegeng; if fire is prosperous generating phlegm, Huangqin and Huanglian are good. Adding Renshen and Baizhu makes Liu Jun Tang, nothing beats it for strengthening the Spleen and harmonizing the Stomach.
For cold phlegm, remove Renshen; fried Xiangfu and Sharen can stop it. Overeating and indigestion: Maiya, Shenqu, Shanzha, and Houpo regulate; add fried Zhishi and Huangqin, why worry about weak body, Stomach, and Spleen? Cough generating phlegm distinguishes cold and heat: for heat, add Huangqin, Huanglian, Zhike, and Jiegeng; for cold phlegm, pair Zhike and Sharen with the original formula, transforming Qi and extinguishing chest phlegm. Wind-cold external contraction cough: Er Chen Tang with Zhike, Jiegeng, and Qianhu; Sugenye, Gegen, Xingren, and Sangpi can clear the Lung; Muxiang regulates Qi, named Shen Su Yin. Er Chen Banxia nature is originally dry; blood deficiency with thirst should not use it; no need to add to Si Wu Tang②; replace with Beimu for specific efficacy. There are also wind-phlegm diseases: Tianma, Baifu Zi, Zhao Jiao Zi, and Nanxing③. Damp-phlegm in the Stomach causes soft body; Er Zhu must still pair with Er Chen Tang. Fire depression in the chest with old phlegm condensation, stuck in the throat and never stopping: Gualou, Xiangfu, Jiegeng, Huanglian, and Zhike; with a little Yuanming Fen, phlegm extinguishes itself. Phlegm in meridians and limbs: apply Jiang Zhi and Zhu Li. White Jie Zi between ribs removes phlegm; Stomach and Spleen phlegm require Zhishi. Wen Dan Tang adds Zhuru and Zhishi④, calming the Spirit and resolving phlegm is number one. If adding Zhishi and Nanxing, the soup is named Dao Tan⑤ to benefit the diaphragm. Removing Gancao and Chenpi makes Qi Qi Tang⑥; adding Zisu, Houpo, Da Zao, and Sheng Jiang, dispersing depression, eliminating phlegm, and regulating Qi,
