Malaria (a disease characterized by alternating chills and fever with periodicity), named according to its morphological symptoms. The Classics state: "When Yin and Yang contend, malaria arises." When Yin contends with Yang, it manifests as cold; when Yang contends with Yin, it manifests as heat. It is like a struggle between two people: if one wins, the other loses; if one loses, the other wins. Due to this mutual contention and fluctuation of Yin and Yang, chills and fever occur together. Those skilled in treating Malaria harmonize the patient's Yin and Yang, pacify the contention, observe accompanying symptoms, and prescribe appropriate herbs, achieving immediate cure. The general principle is: at the onset of Malaria, use Xiangsu San (Fragrant Perilla Powder) to disperse the exterior, followed by Jiawei Xiaochaihu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction) to harmonize Shaoyang. After two or three paroxysms, use Zhinie Dan (Antimalarial Pill) to intercept the course. For chronic Malaria causing Spleen deficiency, use Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) plus Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) to tonify. For sinking of Middle Qi, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) to raise it; once Yuan Qi (Original Qi) returns, the Malaria will cease naturally. Texts state: those occurring once a day have shallow pathology; those occurring every two days have deeper pathology; those occurring every three days have particularly deep pathology. However, alternating chills and fever always pertain to the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) channel; if prolonged and unhealed, it invariably involves the Spleen and Stomach, because Stomach deficiency causes aversion to cold, and Spleen deficiency causes fever. Regulating Shaoyang and supporting the Spleen and Stomach leaves no gaps in the treatment of Malaria.
Xiangsu San (See Taiyang Syndrome in Treatise on Cold Damage).
This is a universal formula for treating Malaria, which must be administered according to modification methods.
