(This prescription) is miraculous for relieving abdominal pain.
Bai Shaoyao (White Peony Root, *Paeoniae Radix Alba*) stir-fried with wine, 3 qian; Gancao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*) honey-roasted, 1.5 qian.
Decoct in water and take orally.
A slow pulse (*Chi Mai*) indicates Cold; add Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, *Zingiberis Radix*). A flooding pulse (*Hong Mai*) indicates Heat; add Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*). A moderate/slow pulse (*Huan Mai*) indicates Dampness; add Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, *Atractylodis Rhizoma*) and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, *Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens*). A choppy pulse (*Se Mai*) indicates Blood injury; add Danggui (Angelica Sinensis, *Angelicae Sinensis Radix*). A wiry pulse (*Xian Mai*) indicates Qi injury; add Shaoyao (Peony Root, *Paeoniae Radix*).
Baohe Wan (Preserve Harmony Pill) (See section on Heartache).
Eliminates food stagnation and clears Damp-Heat. The sensation of a hard mass rising in the abdomen indicates Food Stagnation. Dry tongue and parched mouth indicate Damp-Heat. This formula is indicated for these conditions. If Heat signs are present, add Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*).
Clears Heat-type food accumulation and removes stagnation. Abdominal pain that refuses pressure, constipation, and dark red urine constitute Yang Jie (Yang Knotting/Obstruction); this formula is appropriate. If injured by Cold food, Muxiang Wan (Musk Pill) is appropriate. If both Cold and Heat are involved, one must weigh the proportion of cold versus hot foods ingested and use both formulas together. This is the method of Li Dongyuan.
Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, *Scutellariae Radix*), 1 liang; Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), 5 qian; Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome, *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma*), 7.5 qian; Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, *Medicaginis Fermentatum*), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, *Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma*), Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange, *Citri Reticulatae Fructus Immaturus*), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), each 5 qian.
Use one Lotus Leaf (*Nelumbinis Folium*) decocted in water to form pills. Dosage should be adjusted according to the patient's Deficiency or Excess condition.
Wuwei Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Decoction for Extraordinary Merit) (See section on Deficient-Cold).
Xiangsha Lizhong Tang (Amomum and Aucklandia Decoction to Regulate the Middle) (See section on Middle-Jiao Cold).
Treats external Cold invading the Stomach. Symptoms include cold extremities, cold breath from mouth and nose, continuous lingering pain, preference for warmth and aversion to cold, and a deep, fine pulse. This differs significantly from Heat pain, which comes and goes suddenly, prefers cold and aversion to heat, presents with cracked lips, dry tongue, thirst, and a flooding pulse. The distinction between Cold and Heat is vast.
Xiangsha Erchen Tang (Amomum and Aucklandia Two-Aged Decoction) (See section on Stroke-like Syndromes); it is Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) plus Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, *Aucklandiae Radix*) and Sharen (Amomi Fructus, *Amomi Fructus*).
Treats abdominal pain caused by Cold accumulation and cold food, refusing pressure, or constipation, termed Leng Bi (Cold Obstruction) or Yin Jie (Yin Knotting/Obstruction). This formula attacks the condition.
Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, *Aucklandiae Radix*), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, *Caryophylli Flos*), each 1.5 qian; Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, *Zingiberis Radix*), 3 qian; Maoya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus, *Hordei Fructus Germinatus) stir-fried, 5 qian; Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), 3 qian; Badou (Croton Seed, *Crotonis Fructus) shelled and stir-fried until black, 30 grains.
Use Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, *Medicaginis Fermentatum*) paste to bind into pills. Take 10 or 20 pills per dose with warm water. For severe pain, double the dose. The ingested food will be expelled through diarrhea. If diarrhea does not stop, drink cold congee to halt it.
