The Ten Methods of Surgery were composed by me during my stay at Mount Putuo. I was born and raised at Mount Putuo, later settled in Tiandu, living there for fifty-three years, and practiced medicine for thirty years. Thus, I wrote the book *Yixue Xinwu* (Insights into Medicine), detailing internal medicine syndromes, which was printed and circulated in the world, but surgery was not covered. In the winter of the Renzi year, I returned to Mount Putuo for cultivation. Coincidentally, Emperor Kangxi generously allocated treasury funds to repair our Bodhisattva's palace. The monks and staff involved in the construction numbered several thousand. Patients among them presented with various ailments, which I treated successfully, resulting in complete recovery. There were also patients with carbuncles on the back, gonorrheal sores, scabies, and tinea, who were treated with ointments and powders, achieving results within half a month. Reflecting on this, I realized that when I was in Tiandu, I only covered internal medicine and neglected surgery, which was an omission at that time. Therefore, I re-concentrated my mind and spirit, pondered the essential principles of surgery, and summarized them into ten methods. The approaches to treatment seemed comprehensive. The language is concise yet exhaustive, the prescriptions are simple yet effective. Offering this to the public may provide some benefit? It is anticipated that this book on the Ten Methods will run parallel to *Yixue Xinwu* throughout the world.
Internal resolution refers to the method of using medication to dissipate swelling and toxins at their initial stage. For conditions such as carbuncle, empyema, nuchal carbuncle, and ding toxin (hard boil), when they first appear with aversion to cold and high fever, resembling Taiyang disease (Exterior syndrome), but with pain localized to one area and normal appetite, it indicates the accumulation of pus. However, at the very beginning, the pus has not yet formed; it is merely a disorder of Qi and Blood, reversing and stagnating within the flesh. Apply Yuanzhi Gao (Polygalae Root Ointment) externally, or paste Pujiu Wanchuan Gao (Universal Salvation Ointment); internally administer Yinhuo Gancao Tang (Honeysuckle and Licorice Decoction), which will dissipate immediately. If it is a ding chuang (ding sore), it should be pricked open urgently, or moxa should be applied to the swollen area, Chan Yu Bing (Toad Venom Cake) should be applied, and Wanchuan Gao pasted over it; internally administer Juhua Gancao Tang (Chrysanthemum and Licorice Decoction), which will subside promptly. Chrysanthemum, including roots and leaves, is a sacred herb for treating ding sores. Some cases may be complicated by wind-cold, in which case Xiongzhi Xiangsu San (Ligusticum, Chrysanthemum, Aromatic Perilla Powder) should be used first to disperse the pathogen, followed by herbs such as Chrysanthemum and Honeysuckle, achieving internal resolution. Early intervention is necessary; do not delay.
