[Zhang Congzheng] Cough without phlegm but with sound indicates damage to the Lung Qi and lack of clarity. Suo (coughing up phlegm) without sound but with phlegm indicates Spleen dampness stirring up phlegm. If coughing involves both phlegm and sound, it is due to Lung injury where Qi disturbance affects Spleen dampness, thus coughing accompanies suō. Spleen dampness refers to dampness injured in autumn accumulating in the Spleen. Therefore, *Neijing* states: "Injured by dampness in autumn, cough will surely occur in winter." Generally, early autumn Qi should be clear and肃 (descending/clearing); if abnormal, Qi must rush upward causing cough, and severely disturbing Spleen dampness to generate phlegm. Thus, if there is no retained dampness in the Spleen, even if Lung Qi is injured, phlegm will not form. If there is phlegm with less cold and more heat, cough occurs. Suo is not exclusively a Lung disease because the Lung governs skin and hair and controls the exterior, so wind-cold can injure it first. *Neijing* states: "The five Zang and six Fu organs can all cause cough, not just the Lung; each suffers disease according to its ruling season, not transmitted from other seasons, and the diseases vary." Cold, dryness, dampness, wind, and fire can all cause cough. Only when dampness-induced phlegm-fluid enters the Stomach, stays and does not move, and rises into the Lung does it become suō. If dampness is in the Heart channel, it is called Heat Phlegm. If in the Liver channel, Wind Phlegm. If in the Lung channel, Qi Phlegm. If in the Kidney channel, Cold Phlegm. Treatments differ, each should be treated according to symptoms. If cough without phlegm, use pungent-sweet-warm herbs to warm the Lung. Therefore, treating cough prioritizes treating phlegm; treating phlegm prioritizes descending Qi. Thus, Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and Nantxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma Praeparatum) overcome phlegm, and cough settles naturally. Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) benefit Qi, and phlegm descends naturally. If there is much phlegm but the patient can eat, use Xiaochengqi Tang (Minor Order the Yellow Decoction) to mildly purge. If there is much phlegm but the patient cannot eat, use Nongpo Tang (Magnolia Bark Decoction). In summer, cough with fever is called Heat Cough, treated with Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) 4 liang, added with Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) 1 liang and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) 5 qian. In winter, cough with chills is called Cold Cough, treated with Xiao Qinglong Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction) added with Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum). However, these are general rules; one must adjust according to symptoms and time, assessing deficiency and excess. This is the general principle of treatment.
[Zhu Danxi] Cough mostly in the first half of the day belongs to Fire in the Stomach, treat with Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) to descend Stomach Fire. Cough mostly in the afternoon belongs to Yin Deficiency, must use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) and Chao Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex Preparata) to descend Fire first. Cough mostly at dusk is due to Fire floating in the Lung, do not use cold herbs; use Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) and Wubeizi (Gallae Chinensis) to astringe and descend.
Spring cough is due to Spring ascending Qi; Summer is when Fire flares upward most heavily; Autumn is Damp-Heat injuring the Lung; Winter is Wind-Cold binding the exterior.
Herbs for treating cough generally use Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) because of its pungent dispersing nature. Ke Ni (rebellious Qi/cough) cannot be removed without Gefen (Concha Meretricis et Cyclinae), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus), and Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus). Generally, add phlegm-resolving herbs if there is phlegm. After using dispersing herbs, one must use Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) to drive out phlegm, so it does not return. Using Suké (Cannis Fructus) for cough with much phlegm need not be doubted, but one must first remove the root of the disease; this is a post-treatment astringent herb.
*[Qianjin Fang]* For Shang Qi (Rebellious Qi) many cases recover after taking emetics, and some are cured by acupuncture and moxibustion; one should deeply comprehend this.
[Zhang Zhongjing] Cough with a floating pulse is primarily treated with Nongpo Mahuang Tang (Magnolia Bark and Ephedra Decoction).
Nongpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (5 liang), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) (4 liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (size of a chicken egg), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) (half sheng), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (half sheng), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (2 liang), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (2 liang), Xiaomai (Tritici Fructus) (1 sheng), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) (half sheng).
Take water 1 dou 3 sheng, first boil Xiaomai until cooked, remove dregs, add other herbs, boil to obtain 3 sheng, take 1 sheng warm, three times daily.
If the pulse is deep, Zeqi Tang (Phytolaccae Decoction) is primarily used.
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (half sheng), Zishen (Bistortae Rhizoma or Ziwan/Asteris Radix et Rhizoma - note: text says Zishen, usually Bistorta, but annotation suggests Ziwan), Zeqi (Phytolaccae Radix) (3 jin, boiled with 5 dou 5 sheng east-flowing water to obtain 1 dou 5 sheng), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Baiqian (Cynanchi Stauntonii Rhizoma et Radix) (each 5 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (each 3 liang).
Chop coarsely, put into Zeqi juice, boil to obtain 5 sheng, take 5 he warm, finish by night.
[Zhu Danxi] For cough due to wind-cold invasion, resolve phlegm and open interstices, use Erchen Tang (Two Aged Herbs Decoction) added with Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix).
*[Ju Fang]* San'ao Tang (Three Un-decocted Decoction) treats cough, wind-cold invasion, nasal congestion and heavy voice.

Asked that he usually likes alcohol and meat, has chronic food stagnation, later due to sweating and sexual exertion, wading in cold water, exposure to light rain, enduring hunger then returning home to eat rich food and drink alcohol causing illness. First used Renshen (Ginseng Radix) 4 qian per packet, Mahuang Genjie (Ephedrae Herba Joint) 1.5 qian, given 2-3 doses, cough stopped, aversion to wind and cold removed. Then changed to Nongpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Gualou Ren (Trichosanthis Semen), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) made into pills, given 20+ packets, taken down with Renshen Tang, fullness dissipated and healed.
