[Upper Compilation External Treatment Methods - Explanation of Manipulation Techniques]
[1] "An" (pressing) refers to pressing downward with the hand; "Mo" (rubbing) refers to slowly kneading and rubbing.
[2] This method is designed for injuries to the skin and muscles where there is only swelling, stiffness, and numbness, but no bone fracture.
<1> Some cases result from falls, collisions, or sprains, causing misalignment of the bone joints, stagnation of Qi and blood, leading to swelling and pain.
<2> It is appropriate to use massage techniques: press the meridians to unblock stagnant Qi; rub the areas of accumulation to dissipate swelling caused by blood stasis. In this way, the condition can be cured.
[Upper Compilation External Treatment Methods - Chest and Back]
[1] "Backbone" (Beigu) is a general term for the vertebrae from the Dazhui point (GV14) below on the posterior body up to the waist.
[2] This bone is also called the spinal column (Jigu) or the muscle-bone between the spine and shoulder blades (Lvgǔ), commonly known in vernacular as the backbone.
[3] Its shape is a single central column consisting of twenty-one segments, extending down to the end of the coccyx, supporting the shoulders above, and connecting internally to the Zang-Fu organs. The bones on both sides attach and overlap horizontally, curving forward to form the chest and hypochondrium.
[4] For those who first suffer from wind-cold invasion and subsequently sustain traumatic injury, blood stasis accumulates and coagulates. If the spinal tendons protrude, the bone joints must be misaligned, resulting in a kyphotic (hunchbacked) deformity.
<1> One should first knead the tendons until they are soft and pliable, then press the bones to gradually realign the joints, allowing the dorsal spine to become straight again.
<2> Internally administer Zhenggu Zijin Dan (Orthopedic Purple Gold Pill).
<3> Externally apply Dingtong San (Pain-Relieving Powder), cauterize the area with a red-hot iron tool, remove the heat source before applying the medicine, and then paste Hanyuan Gao (Primordial Ointment).
