Amomum fruit (Sha Ren), Pinellia tuber (Ban Xia), Apricot seed (Xing Ren), Ginseng root (Ren Shen), Licorice root (Gan Cao) (each 1 liang); Magnolia bark (Nou Pu), Papaya fruit (Mu Gua), Agastache herb (Huo Xiang), Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (Bai Zhu), White hyacinth bean (Bai Bian Dou), Red Poria sclerotium (Chi Fu Ling) (each 2 liang).
In summer, after eating and drinking, if there is disharmony of the six fu organs (dysfunction of the six hollow organs), Huoluan (a disease characterized by severe vomiting and diarrhea) accompanied by muscle cramps (tetany/cramping, specifically of the calf muscles), this formula is indicated.
The term "Liu He" (Six Harmonies) refers to harmonizing the six fu organs. For disorders caused by food and drink, Amomum fruit is used for harmonization; for vomiting and regurgitation mixed with phlegm-saliva, Pinellia tuber is used for harmonization; for stagnation of qi in the chest and diaphragm, Apricot seed is used for harmonization; for dysfunction due to stomach deficiency, Ginseng root and Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome are used for harmonization; for discomfort in the middle jiao, Agastache herb is used for harmonization; for latent summer-heat damaging the spleen, White hyacinth bean and Magnolia bark are used for harmonization; for disorders of muscle cramps, Papaya fruit is used for harmonization; for accumulation of heat in the triple burner (San Jiao), Red Poria sclerotium is used for harmonization; for urgent vomiting due to rebellious qi, Licorice root is used for harmonization. For detailed textual research, please refer to the chapter on "Summer-heat".
Agastache herb (Huo Xiang) (3 qian), Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (Bai Zhu) (stir-fried), Magnolia bark (Nou Pu) (stir-fried with ginger juice), Poria sclerotium (Fu Ling), Perilla leaf (Zi Su), Pinellia tuber (Ban Xia) (processed), Areca seed husk (Da Fu Pi) (cleaned), Platycodon root (Jie Geng).
For Huoluan caused by internal injury or external contraction, this formula is indicated.
For internal injuries, regulate the middle jiao; Agastache herb, Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome, Poria sclerotium, Tangerine peel (Chen Pi), Licorice root, Pinellia tuber, Magnolia bark, Platycodon root, and Areca seed husk are all herbs that regulate the middle jiao. Regulating the middle jiao allows righteous qi to be secured within; for external contractions, disperse the exterior; Perilla leaf and Angelica dahurica root (Bai Zhi) are herbs that disperse the exterior. Dispersing the exterior allows righteous qi to be secured outside. If...
Burnt salt (Shao Yan) (10 liang).
Drink fifteen sheng (a unit of volume) of hot salt water. Drink three times, inducing vomiting after each drink.
When one desires to vomit but cannot, desires to defecate but cannot, and suffers from severe abdominal pain, it is named Gan Huoluan (Dry Huoluan, a critical condition characterized by abdominal pain, inability to vomit or defecate). This can cause sudden death. Urgently use this formula to induce vomiting via probing.
Salt is a salty substance; in large quantities, it becomes bitter. The classics state that salty flavors can soften hardness, thus it can open up retained food and stubborn phlegm; bitter flavors can promote upward discharge (emesis), thus probing induces vomiting easily. This method can restore life and revive the dead; do not lightly disregard it.
Narrative: Phlegm syndromes manifesting externally are easily known by people; phlegm-saliva hiding internally causes hundreds of strange syndromes, which are difficult for people to know. Those manifesting externally can only be treated according to standard methods; those hiding internally cannot have their nests emptied without Kongxian Dan, Shen Wan, or the Dao Cang method (a therapy involving massive meat consumption to cleanse the gut). Now, eleven ancient formulas are collected to treat phlegm; flexibility and adaptation depend on the practitioner.
