Various diseases occurring postpartum should not be treated simply according to the conventional methods for ordinary diseases; instead, nourishing blood should be the primary principle. It is crucial to remember not to use cold-natured medicines or diaphoretic (sweat-inducing) medicines.
Postpartum treatment should first focus on expelling retained blood and generating new blood, ensuring that blood does not stagnate and thereby avoiding other diseases. Suitable formulas include Heishen San (Black Spirit Powder) and Wujin San (Golden Metal Powder).
If the placenta fails to be expelled postpartum, it is commonly referred to as "retained placenta" (Xibao). This occurs because the membranes of the placenta are connected to the umbilical cord of the fetus. If the placenta is not expelled within a short time, it should be severed according to ancient methods, tied with a rope, and suspended to fall out. Simultaneously, urgent medical intervention with specific prescriptions is required. Suitable remedies include Mingdan (Life-Restoring Pill), Niuxi Tang (Achyranthes Root Decoction), or applying Ricinus communis seeds (Bimazi) to the sole of the foot.
Postpartum syncope due to blood stasis occurs when retained blood flows into the Liver Meridian, causing visual disturbances such as seeing black spots, dizziness, and even coma with loss of consciousness. Typically, vinegar and charcoal can be poured in front of the bed; the aroma of the vinegar helps to subside the symptoms of blood-stasis syncope. Suitable formulas include Qinghun San (Clear Soul Powder), Chuanxiong San (Ligusticum Wallichii Powder), or the method of insuffusing vinegar with leeks into the nose.
Postpartum care must prioritize greatly tonifying Qi and Blood. Even if miscellaneous symptoms arise, they should be treated as secondary concerns.
Postpartum, both Qi and Blood are damaged, and the Five Zang Organs become suddenly deficient. It is advisable to regularly consume Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) and Yimu Bazhen Tang (Motherwort Eight-Treasure Decoction).
Postpartum delirium, resembling possession by spirits, is often caused by retained blood flowing into the Heart Meridian, or by Heart Qi deficiency leading to fright and mental unrest. Suitable formulas include Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) with modifications, Hupo Dihuang Wan (Amber and Rehmannia Pill), Dasheng Zelan San (Great Sage Blumea Powder), and Anshen Tang (Calm Spirit Decoction).
Postpartum mutism occurs because retained blood obstructs the orifices of the Heart. Since the Heart Qi connects to the tongue, the tongue becomes stiff, resulting in an inability to speak. Suitable formulas include Qizhen Tang (Seven Treasures Decoction), Gufeng San (Lonely Phoenix Powder), and Zhuxue Buxin Tang (Expel Blood and Tonify Heart Decoction).
Postpartum Heart Qi deficiency causing palpitations, restlessness, and disordered speech can be treated with Qili Tang (Seven Ration Decoction), Danggui Fushen San (Angelica and Poria Powder), Hupo Dihuang Wan (Amber and Rehmannia Pill), Fuling San (Poria Powder), and Siwu Buxin Tang (Four Substances Tonify Heart Decoction).
Postpartum wind-stroke, characterized by open eyes, locked jaw, body swelling, opisthotonos, and erratic speech, laughter, or crying, is often caused by Heart deficiency and blood shortage combined with exposure to Wind pathogen. Suitable formulas include Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction), Zhuli Tang (Bamboo Juice Decoction), Fangfeng Danggui Tang (Saposhnikovia and Angelica Decoction), Yufeng San (Prevent Wind Powder), and Danggui Fushen San (Angelica and Poria Powder).

Postpartum stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen accompanied by a mass is named "Child Pillow Pain" (Erzhen Tong), indicating that lochia remains coagulated and undissipated. It is suitable to take Xuanhusuo San (Corydalis Rhizome Powder) administered with Red Flower Wine (Honghua Jiu).
Postpartum retention of lochia with abdominal pain can be treated with Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder) added with Honghua (Carthamus) and without Mahuang (Ephedra), Mudanpi San (Tree Peony Bark Powder), or Danggui Honghua San (Angelica and Carthamus Powder).
Postpartum incomplete expulsion of lochia with abdominal pain can be treated with Zelan Tang (Blumea Decoction).
Postpartum continuous pain in the lower abdomen below the navel can be treated with Xuanhu San (Corydalis Powder) or Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction).
Postpartum distending pain in both legs can be treated with Xiongguo Zhike Tang (Chuanxiong, Angelica, and Aurantium Decoction).
Postpartum accumulation of masses in the abdomen causing pain, known as "Jia" (abdominal mass), can be treated with Guixin Wan (Cinnamon Heart Pill) or Ezhu San (Curcuma Powder).
Postpartum deficiency heat with vexation, dry mouth, and thirst can be treated with Shendong Dihuang Tang (Ginseng, Ophiopogon, and Rehmannia Decoction) or Renshen Danggui Tang (Ginseng and Angelica Decoction).
Postpartum severe blood deficiency causing extreme thirst and excessive drinking can be treated with Lugen Tang (Reed Rhizome Decoction).

Postpartum persistent deficiency sweating can be treated with Bushun Huangqi Tang (Tonify Damage Astragalus Decoction).
Within one hundred days postpartum, Qi and Blood remain weak. If neglected in care, or due to physical exertion, "Rulao" (postpartum consumptive disease) may develop, presenting with alternating chills and fever, night sweats, dizziness and headache, occasional cough, heaviness, fatigue, and indigestion. Suitable formulas include Ren Shen Biejia San (Ginseng and Turtle Shell Powder) and Zengsun Chaihu Tang (Modified Bupleurum Decoction).
Postpartum vomiting and loss of appetite can be treated with Baizhu Angwei San (Atractylodes Stomach-Calming Powder) or Xiangsha Yangwei Tang (Costus and Amomum Nourish Stomach Decoction).
Postpartum diarrhea with abdominal pain can be treated with Tiao Zhong Tang (Regulate Middle Decoction) with modifications.
Postpartum edema, caused by retained blood flowing into the four limbs, can be treated with Xiao Tiaojing Tang (Minor Regulate Menses Decoction).
Cases where improper care damages the Spleen and Stomach, leading to Qi deficiency, food stagnation, and swelling, can be treated with Shuling Tang (Atractylodes and Poria Decoction).
Postpartum constipation should not be treated with harsh purgatives. Instead, suitable remedies include Danggui Runchang Tang (Angelica Moisten Intestines Decoction), Honey Water, or Daodao San (Guide and Conduct Powder).
Postpartum urinary retention can be treated with Huashi Tongling San (Talcus and Smilax Clearing Powder) or Niuxi Mutong Tang (Achyranthes and Akebia Decoction).

Postpartum agalactia (lack of milk) can be treated with Yongquan San (Surging Spring Powder) or Pig Trotter Soup.
Postpartum hematuria can be treated with Puhuang San (Lygodium Spore Powder).
