(From *Qianjin Fang*)
Treats forgetfulness in reading. Long-term use makes one intelligent and prevents forgetting while studying. This condition arises from insufficient Heart Blood, where Phlegm and Fire disturb the Shen (Spirit).
*Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum* (fried with rendered fat) *Longgu* (ground into powder, boiled overnight inside a chicken abdomen) *Yuanzhi* *Jiujie Changpu*, all in equal parts, ground into powder. Take each dose mixed with wine.
This is a formula for the Hand-Shaoyin (Heart) and Foot-Shaoyin (Kidney) meridians. The turtle is the leader of shelled creatures, the most spiritual of Yin entities; the dragon is the leader of scaled creatures, the most spiritual of Yang entities; [The turtle shell] enters the Kidney to store Essence, its Qi ascends to the Heart, strengthening willpower and enhancing intelligence; *Changpu* disperses Liver Qi via its acridity and soothes the Spleen via its fragrance, opening the orifices of the Heart and benefiting the nine orifices, eliminating Dampness and Phlegm (*Changpu* is the essence of aquatic plants, a spiritual herb of immortals); furthermore, the turtle tonifies the Kidney (Xuanwu, the turtle and snake, corresponds to the Kidney, which stores Zhi [Will]); the dragon calms the Liver (Qinglong corresponds to the Liver, which houses Hun [Ethereal Soul]), thereby dissipating Phlegm and Fire.
(From Zhu Danxi)
Treats tinnitus and deafness, cough with rebellious Qi, and deficiency heat caused by Kidney Water deficiency and blazing Fire. The ear is the orifice of the Kidney; tinnitus and deafness all belong to Kidney deficiency. When Water fails to control Fire, Wood carries the Fire's momentum upward in rebellion, causing cough and rebellious Qi, i.e., hiccup as seen today. It is suitable for those with a flooding Kidney pulse who cannot tolerate harsh tonification.
*Huangbai* (stir-fried with salt and wine) *Zhimu* (stir-fried with salt water, 4 liang) *Shudihuang* (steamed with wine) *Baiguiban* (fried with rendered fat, 6 liang) *Zhujingsui* (pig spinal marrow).
This is a formula for the Foot-Shaoyin (Kidney) meridian. These four herbs are all drugs that nourish Yin and tonify the Kidney. Nourishing Water is the way to descend Fire; this is what is meant by "strengthening the master of Water to control the sunlight" (excess Yang). Adding spinal marrow is because it can unblock the Kidney and Mingmen, utilizing the principle of "bone entering bone, marrow replenishing marrow." The body's Kidney and Mingmen are connected to the vertebral column.
(Also known as Tongguan Wan, from Li Dongyuan)
Treats steaming heat due to Kidney deficiency, weakness of the feet and knees, impotence, sweating of the genitalia, wheezing due to Chong Mai Qi rebelling upward, and pathogenic heat in the Lower Jiao characterized by no thirst but urinary retention. In the Kidney, there is Water and Fire; when Water is insufficient, Fire reigns alone, causing deficiency heat; when Liver and Kidney are deficient and Damp-Heat stagnates in the Lower Jiao, it causes weakness of the feet and knees, impotence, and genital sweating; the Chong Mai originates from... *Huangbai* (stir-fried with wine, 2 liang) *Zhimu* (stir-fried with wine, 1 liang) *Rougui* (1 qian). Made into honey pills.
This is a formula for the Foot-Shaoyin (Kidney) meridian. When Water cannot overcome Fire, the method should be to strengthen Water to control Yang. *Huangbai* is bitter, cold, and slightly acrid, clearing Minister Fire from the Bladder and supplementing insufficient Kidney Water; [it is often used with *Zhimu*], forming an excellent agent for nourishing Water. *Rougui* is acrid and hot; borrowed for its counter-assistance role, it serves as a guiding herb for the Shaoyin meridian, employing "cold treatment using hot substances" (Li Dongyuan said: The Classic states... Guan zhe shen... sheng yu Fei... yong Qing Zao... liu er niao... shi, tui... ze yin wu... ci bing... zhi zheng... yin ru... zhi shu... you dang... fen qi... If Gui is removed from this formula, it is named Liaoshen Ziben Wan: treats dim vision due to Kidney deficiency. If Gui is removed and Huanglian is added, it is named Huangbai Zishen Wan: treats upper heat and lower cold, heart vexation due to Water decline (upper heat and lower cold is extreme Yang resembling Yin). Using only Huangbai alone is named Dabu Wan: treats deficiency heat of the Kidney and Bladder (those with Qi deficiency take it with Sizijunzi Tang, those with Blood deficiency take it with Siwu Tang), pain in the waist and thighs with heat in the soles of the feet; ground into powder, taken mixed with ginger juice and wine, it is named Qianxing San; treats gout, waist...
