This is the original formula of Yan Yonghe. Xue Lizhai added Polygala Root and Angelica Sinensis Root, each 1 qian, to treat Blood deficiency, tonifying Heart from Liver, and Spleen from Heart, which is the "treating two organs apart" method. (Spleen Qi deficiency and cold, unable to transport Blood back into meridians, thus using Ginseng, Astragalus, Atractylodes, and Licorice to tonify Spleen, and further using Costus Root to move Qi; since Qi deficiency tends to scatter, Spiny Ziziphus Seed is used to astringe Liver Blood; if Blood does not return to meridians, Heart loses nourishment and becomes restless, thus Longan Aril and Poria with Hostwood are used to tonify Heart.) Gao Gugeng stated: Costus Root is originally used to guide Blood back into meridians, but its aromatic dryness may stir Liver Fire and damage Body Fluids, so it is often removed, and White Peony Root is added to retrieve lost True Yin. Moreover, Atractylodes is drying and harsh; for those with Fire in the Lungs, it may aggravate coughing. With the assistance of White Peony, Atractylodes only serves to nourish Ying (Nutritive) Qi without causing upward rebellion. Only in cases of Spleen deficiency with diarrhea is Costus Root retained to awaken the Spleen, which is quite reasonable.
