[Diagram of the Spleen]
The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: The spleen and stomach are the officials in charge of granaries, from which the five flavors emerge. It also states: The central direction corresponds to yellow, internally connecting with the Pi (Spleen), opening into the mouth, storing essence in the Pi, therefore diseases manifest at the root of the tongue. Its flavor is sweet, its category is Earth, its animal is the ox, its grain is Ji (Setaria italica), it corresponds to the four seasons, and above corresponds to Zhenxing (Saturn); thus one knows that disease lies in the flesh. Its sound is Gong (Palace), its number is five, its odor is fragrant, its fluid is saliva, its color is yellow.
Central generates dampness; dampness generates Earth; Earth generates sweetness; sweetness generates Pi (Spleen); Pi generates flesh. In heaven it is dampness, on earth it is Earth, in the body it is flesh, in the zang organs it is Pi, in vocalization it is cough, in movement it is hiccups (Yue), in orifices it is the mouth, in flavor it is sweet, in emotion it is overthinking (Si). Overthinking injures the Pi; anger overcomes overthinking. Dampness injures flesh; wind overcomes dampness. Sweetness injures flesh; sourness overcomes sweetness.
The Pi is the root of the granary and the residence of Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi). Its luster manifests in the white skin around the lips, and its nourishment fills the muscles. This belongs to the category of extreme Yin, communicating with Earth Qi, acting as an isolated organ to irrigate the four directions. The Pi governs the four limbs and transports fluids for the Wei Stomach.
The Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian originates at the tip of the great toe, follows the medial white flesh margin of the toe, passes behind the nuclear bone (first metatarsal base), ascends to the anterior edge of the medial malleolus, ascends along the medial aspect of the lower leg, follows posterior to the tibia, crosses anterior to the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian, ascends along the anterior edge of the medial knee and thigh, enters the abdomen, connects with the Pi and links with the Wei Stomach, ascends through the diaphragm, flanks the pharynx, connects with the root of the tongue, and scatters under the tongue. A branch separates from the stomach, ascends through the diaphragm, and pours into the Xin Heart. There are twenty-one acupoints in total, forty-two bilaterally.
Yinbai (SP1): Located on the medial side of the tip of the great toe, about the width of a leek leaf from the corner of the toenail. It is the Jing-Well point (Wood) where the Spleen meridian emerges. Needle 1 fen, moxa 3 cones.
【Indications】Abdominal distension, wheezing and fullness preventing lying down, vomiting, inability to eat, heat in the chest, sudden diarrhea, epistaxis, Shijue (coma/unconsciousness), women with prolonged menstrual bleeding, pediatric Ke Wu (fright due to strangers) and convulsions.
Dadu (SP2): Located in the depression medial to the proximal interphalangeal joint of the great toe, at the junction of red and white flesh within the bone gap. It is the Ying-Spring point (Fire) where the Spleen meridian flows. Needle 3 fen, moxa 3 cones.
