Discussion states: Feng Lao (Wind Asthenia) belongs to the category of Gan Lao (Liver Asthenia). The Liver governs Wind; Wind is characterized by its mobility and rapid changes, reaching everywhere. In individuals suffering from asthenia due to overwork, both Qi and Blood are deficient, making them susceptible to invasion by Wind pathogen. The pathogen may wander in the skin or stagnate deeply in the Zang-Fu organs. This disease causes numbness and paralysis of the limbs, spasticity and tightness of tendons and vessels, dizziness and blurred vision, irritability and frequent fright, a tendency to pick at seams of clothing (indicating mental aberration), talking and shouting wildly in sleep, withered nails, and darkened eyes. These constitute its clinical manifestations.
For treating Feng Lao where Wind attacks and flows into the four limbs, causing soreness and pain in the back and shoulder blades, deficiency-heat in the Upper Jiao, restlessness and oppression in the chest and heart, lack of luster in the face and body, fatigue and weakness, exhaustion of Yuan Qi and organ vitality, heaviness in the waist and legs, gradual emaciation, occasional attacks of cold Qi, and stabbing distension in the abdomen and hypochondrium, use Qiang Huo Tang (Notopterygium Decoction).
Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, remove rhizome head) Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica) Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, roast until cracked, remove skin and umbilicus) Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, remove seedlings and soil) Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, remove joints, each 2 liang) Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, soak in wine, slice, and roast) Bai Ji Li (Tribuli Fructus, soak in wine overnight and roast, each 2 liang) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Chen Xiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, cut into small pieces) Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, slice and roast) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fry and cut) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, soak in fresh ginger juice overnight, slice and roast) Bai Fu Ling (Poria, remove black skin) Lu Rong (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum, fry with butter and remove hair) Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma) Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove rough bark, each 1 liang).
The above eighteen ingredients are chopped like hemp seeds. Each dose consists of 3 qian bi (approx. 9-15g depending on era/measure), boiled in one zhan (approx. 200ml) of water with two jujubes and two cun (approx. 6cm) of scallion white. Decoct to 70% volume, strain, and take warm. Doses are taken on an empty stomach, before noon, and before bed.
For treating Feng Lao causing fatigue in the four limbs, soreness and pain in all joints, reduced appetite, difficulty walking, thick and sticky sputum, extreme lethargy and weakness, sallow complexion, and red, scanty urination, use Bie Jia Tang (Tartar Shell Decoction).
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, remove skirt edge, vinegar-fry) Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, remove seedlings and soil) Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, remove seedlings) Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, slice and roast) Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, slice and roast, each 1 liang) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, remove rhizome head) Chi Fu Ling (Poria cum Rubro, remove black skin) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, remove black heart) Zi Wan (Asteris Radix, remove soil) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fry) Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix) Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex) Bai Xian Pi (Dictamni Cortex) Kuan Dong Hua (Farfarae Flos) Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, soak in hot water, remove white pith, and roast) Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus, remove heart and stir-fry) Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove rough bark) Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, roast until cracked, remove skin and umbilicus, each 0.5 liang) Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos, 1 fen).
The above twenty-three ingredients are cut like hemp seeds. Each dose consists of 3 qian bi, boiled in one large zhan of water with one dried plum, three slices of fresh ginger, and two split jujubes. Decoct to 70% volume, strain, add a little Moschus, and take slightly warm. Adding half wine for decoction is even better.
For treating Feng Lao with Qi deficiency, cough, and fever, use Bai Gui Tang (Old Turtle Decoction).
Bai Gui (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, vinegar-fry) Hu Gu (Pantheros Os, vinegar-fry) Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, remove forked branches) Hai Tong Pi (Sarcandae Cortex, cut) Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, slice and roast) Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix) Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis, cut, each 0.5 liang) Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove rough bark) Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, stir-fry) Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, cut) Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium, cut with skin) Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, remove roots and joints) Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, soak in wine, slice, and roast, each 1 liang).
