Discussion states: In cases of Huoluan (Cholera-like syndrome with sudden vomiting and diarrhea), moxibustion may not bring about immediate cure, but it ultimately prevents death; one must avoid reverse moxibustion (moxibustion applied contrary to the disease's progression). If symptoms present as abdominal pain first, or vomiting followed by diarrhea, moxibustion should be applied according to the specific manifestations. If heart pain occurs first along with vomiting, moxibustiate Jueque (CV14, Pericardium Master Point) with seven moxa cones; this acupoint is located one cun below the heart region. If ineffective, repeat moxibustion with the same number of cones. If abdominal pain occurs first, moxibustiate Taicang (RN10, Water Gate) with fourteen moxa cones; this acupoint is located four cun below the xiphoid process, one fu (span) above the umbilicus. If symptoms persist, repeat moxibustion with the same number of cones. If vomiting and diarrhea are uncontrollable, and both yin and yang pulses in both hands are rapid and chaotic, moxibustiate three cun below the xiphoid cartilage and three cun below the umbilicus, each with sixty to seventy moxa cones. For dry heaving, moxibustiate Jianshi (PC5, Intertendinous Point) on both sides with seven moxa cones; this acupoint is located three cun proximal to the wrist crease, between the two tendons. If symptoms persist, repeat moxibustion with the same number of cones. For cold extremities, moxibustiate Sanyinjiao (SP6, Three Yin Intersection) on both sides with seven moxa cones; this acupoint is located three cun directly above the medial malleolus, at the posterior border of the tibia. If not cured, repeat moxibustion with the same number of cones. If diarrhea occurs first, moxibustiate Gumen (ST25, Grain Gate) with fourteen moxa cones; this acupoint is located two cun lateral to the umbilicus, left side for males and right side for females, also known as the Front-Mu point of the Large Intestine. If not cured, repeat moxibustion with the same number of cones. If diarrhea is unceasing, moxibustiate Dadu (SP2, Great Metropolis) with seven moxa cones; this acupoint is located on the medial aspect of the white skin margin, distal to the metatarsophalangeal joint of the great toe. If debility from vomiting and diarrhea leads to severe irritability and a sensation of impending death, moxibustiate Cigong (CV13, Heart Palace) with twenty-seven moxa cones; this acupoint is located two and a half cun lateral to the Henggu (CV12, Horizontal Bone) on both sides. Henggu is located below the umbilicus, corresponding to the superior border of the pubic symphysis. For muscle spasms (cramps) occurring in the arms and chest, moxibustiate the white skin margin of the palm with seven moxa cones, and additionally moxibustiate Danzhong (CV17, Chest Center), Zhongfu (LU1, Middle Palace), Jueque (CV14), Weiwannan (Ren-12 equivalent area or ST-related point depending on context, here likely referring to epigastric region), and ChiZe (LU5, Cubit Marsh); these treat tendon constriction, and symptoms in the head and feet will resolve. For Qi rebellion with cramps, moxibustiate the white skin margin of the calcaneal ankle with twenty-one moxa cones on each side. Additionally, moxibustiate the center of the lower abdomen at the Henggu, with the number of cones determined by the patient's age.
For cramps accompanied by cold limbs, moxibustiate the junction of black and white skin at both Rugen (ST18, Root of Breast) points with one moxa cone each. For cramps, moxibustiate Yongquan (KI1, Gushing Spring) with six or seven moxa cones; this acupoint is located in the depression of the sole, anterior to the midpoint between the second and third toes, on the plantar aponeurosis. Also moxibustiate the hands and feet; moxibustiate one cun above the umbilicus with fourteen moxa cones, until movement ceases, then do not hold or restrain the limbs. Additionally, moxibustiate the large tendon in the inner thigh, one cun away from the genitalia. For Huoluan-induced cramps, have the patient lie prone in a straight position, extend both hands along the body. Measure the distance between the tips of the two elbows horizontally with a rope. Align the head with the end of the rope. Moxibustiate one and a half cun lateral to the spinous processes of the spine, with one hundred moxa cones; this method of Hua Tuo ensures recovery. For those who appear dead from Huoluan but still have faint breath, moxibustiate Chengjin (BL57, Supporting Muscle) with seven moxa cones. To revive the seemingly dead, take a rope and measure the circumference of the foot from the toes to the heel. Fold the rope in half. Place one end at the heel where it touches the ground, and extend the other end upwards to the length of the folded rope; the tip indicates the acupoint. Additionally, fill the umbilicus with salt and moxibustiate with fourteen cones.
