[Puhuang Decoction] Treats the condition in infants who have fallen from a bed or to the ground, with blood stasis in the abdomen, dull abdominal pain, alternating chills and fever, refusal to breastfeed, and constant crying and calling.
Puhuang (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 10 zhu), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (8 zhu), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (7 zhu), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (13 zhu).
The above seven herbs are cut into pieces, boiled in two sheng of water until one sheng remains. The dregs are removed, and Mangxiao is added. The decoction is divided into three doses. Adjust the dose according to the infant's emaciation, taking half if necessary. If there is blood in the stool or urine, the disease will be cured. Avoid cold food.
[Formula for treating infants' lack of awareness of hunger and fullness]:
Burn fourteen Shushi (Mus Stercus, rat feces) into ash powder, and administer.
[Formula for treating infants who eat soil]:
Take one jin of meat, tie it with a rope, drag it on the ground for several li without washing, roast it over fire, and feed it to the infant.
[Formula for treating infant hiccups (yue)]:
Shengjiangzhi (Zingiberis Recens Juice), Niuru (Bovis Lac) (each 5 he).
Boil the above two ingredients to obtain 5 he, divide into two doses.
Another formula: Take one sheng of Niuru (Bovis Lac), boil down to 5 he, divide into five doses.
[Formula for treating infant [text missing]]:
Mix Zaozhong Huiyan (Ash from kitchen stove) and Yanzhongyan (Salt) in equal parts, heat them, and apply as a hot compress.
[Formula for treating infants who accidentally swallow needles]:
Take Cishi (Magnetitum, magnetite) the size of a date pit. Let the infant swallow or hold it in the mouth; the needle will emerge immediately.
[Formula for treating infants who accidentally swallow iron or other objects]:
Take one handful of Aihao (Artemisiae Argyi Herba), chop it finely, boil in five sheng of water until one and a half sheng remains. Administer, and the object will pass.
[Formula for treating infants bitten by Qu Liu (earwig) around the abdomen, which is fatal]:
Crush Jiliye (Tribuli Folium, leaves of Tribulus terrestris) and apply to the affected area. If leaves are unavailable, the fruit (Jili) can be used.
Another formula: Mix Tu from Swallow's Nest (Yanke Zhongtu) with Zhuzhi (Suis Medulla, pork marrow) and apply. Change when dry.
(One treatise, three syndrome descriptions, seventy-one formulas, two incantations, twenty-eight moxibustion methods)
The treatise states: Generally, after the age of forty-five, people gradually experience dim vision. After sixty, vision often improves somewhat. For treatment, before fifty, Xiegan Tang (Liver-Draining Decoction) may be taken. After fifty, liver-draining methods should not be used. If there is eye disease, Shi Dan San (Stone Gall Powder) or similar external applications may be used. If there is no disease, do not use powders externally; simply tonify the Liver. If Liver wind-heat causes dim vision, moxa should be applied to Ganshu (BL18), and Chufeng Tang/Wan/San (Wind-Expelling Decoction/Pill/Powder) should be taken for dozens of doses, which should lead to recovery.
Raw consumption of the Five Pungent Vegetables (Wuxin), drinking hot beverages, eating hot wheat-based foods, excessive alcohol consumption, unregulated sexual activity, extreme distance gazing, frequent viewing of the sun and moon, night viewing of stars, reading small print at night, reading under moonlight, prolonged copying, fine carving work, endless board games, long-term exposure to smoke and fire, excessive weeping, and excessive bleeding from head acupuncture points.
These sixteen factors are the root causes of blindness. Those who cultivate their nature should guard against them carefully. Furthermore, hunting, traveling through wind and frost, chasing beasts against the wind, day and night without rest, are also mediums for damaging the eyes. Indulging in momentary frivolous thoughts leads to lifelong chronic diseases. Can one not be cautious? When young, if one does not take care of oneself, by age forty, vision gradually dims. If one follows these precautions, one can reach old age without other ailments. Therefore, after age forty, one should frequently close the eyes, avoid looking around, and not open them unless necessary. This is the ultimate method of eye protection. Those who suffer eye problems due to excessive reading or gaming are diagnosed with "Liver Fatigue" (Gan Lao). To cure this, one must close the eyes and not look for three years. Merely draining the Liver or employing various treatments is ultimately ineffective. People with wind-rash often have dim vision; first treat the wind, and the dimness will resolve.
Movement of the Foot-Taiyang (Bladder), Foot-Yangming (Stomach), and Hand-Shaoyang (Sanjiao) meridians can cause eye diseases.
The Yellow Emperor asked: I once climbed the Qingleng Terrace, looked back from the middle steps, and crawled forward. I found this strange and wondered internally. Sometimes I stared alone, calming my mind and qi, but could not recover for a long time. With hair loose, kneeling long, looking down, it persisted for a long time, then suddenly stopped. What qi causes this?
Qibo replied: The essence of the five zang and six fu organs all ascend to the eyes, forming the eyeball. The socket of the eyeball is the eye. The essence of bone forms the pupil (tongzi). The essence of sinews forms the black eye (iris). The essence of blood forms the vascular network. The essence of qi forms the white eye (sclera). The essence of muscle forms the eyelid constraints. The essence of sinew, bone, blood, and qi merges with the meridians to form the optic nerve (muxi), which connects upward to the brain and exits posteriorly at the neck. Thus, if pathogenic factors attack the neck, coinciding with body deficiency, deep invasion follows the optic nerve into the brain. Entry into the brain causes rotation, which pulls the optic nerve tight, causing vertigo and spinning. If pathogens attack the eyeball, the invaded part becomes misaligned, causing the eyeball to scatter. Scattering leads to diplopia (seeing double). The eyes are the gathering place of the essence of the five zang and six fu organs, nourished by Ying and Wei qi, Hun and Po, and generated by Shen qi. Mental labor scatters Hun and Po and confuses Yi Zhi. Thus, the pupil and black eye correspond to Yin, while the white eye and red vessels correspond to Yang. When Yin and Yang coordinate and rotate, vision is clear. The eyes are the messengers of the Heart, and the Heart is the residence of Shen. If Shen disperses and Jing becomes chaotic, and one suddenly sees unusual sights, Shen, Hun, Po, and Gui become disordered and mismatched, resulting in "Huo" (delusion/confusion).
The Yellow Emperor asked: Why am I so confused? Whenever I go to Dongwan, I feel confused, and it returns when I leave. Am I only mentally strained at Dongwan? Why is it so different?
Qibo said: No. If the heart has preferences and Shen has aversions, sudden mutual stimulation causes Jing chaos and visual error, leading to Shen confusion. When Shen shifts and recovers, mild cases are called "Mi" (bewilderment), severe cases "Huo". The outer corner of the eye on the face is the outer canthus (ruibi); the inner part near the nose consists of the upper outer canthus and lower inner canthus. Red eyes indicate Heart disease; white eyes, Lung disease; blue-green eyes, Liver disease; yellow eyes, Spleen disease; black eyes, Kidney disease. Yellow eyes that cannot be named indicate Chest Middle (Xiongzhong) disease. Diagnosing eye pain: red vessels moving top-down indicate Taiyang disease; bottom-up, Yangming disease; outside-in, Shaoyang disease. Nasal discharge (Bi Dong) that flows turbidly downwards continuously transmits to nasal congestion and dim vision, caused by Qi Jue (rebellious Qi). The Foot-Yangming meridian has branches entering the face from beside the nose, named Xuanlu, opposite the mouth, connecting to the root of the eye. Treat where there is excess. Reduce excess, tonify deficiency; reversing this worsens the condition. The Foot-Taiyang meridian has branches entering the brain from the neck, directly connecting to the eye root, named Yanxi. For fixed head and eye pain, treat between the two tendons in the neck, entering the brain to separate into Yin Qiao. Yin and Yang intersect; Yang enters Yin and exits. Yang intersects at the outer canthus; abundant Yang opens the eyes. Absent Yin closes the eyes.
