(One treatise, nine formulas, one moxibustion method, one dietary prohibition)
Since the previous volume already contained formulas for treating wind affecting the head and face, the condition of *Feng Xuan* (Wind Vertigo/Dizziness) should not have been separated into a distinct section. However, because these are formulas by Xu Sibai, they cannot be mixed with other formulas; therefore, a specific category titled "Formulas for Wind Vertigo" is established here to exclusively present Xu's formulas.
Xu Sibai stated: In my youth, I inherited my family's profession and became familiar with the essential treatments of classical prescriptions and famous physicians, having heard of them all. I believed that the pathways of *Feng Xuan* are numerous, and the methods of various schools were not necessarily effective. As for this technique, I had personally investigated it extensively. Since my early years, I have used it with almost no failure. Now that I am approaching old age, fearing sudden death might prevent me from passing it on, I clearly demonstrate the syndrome differentiation and theory to leave for future generations.
Generally, the disease of *Feng Xuan* originates from unstable Heart Qi and the accumulation of excess pathogenic factors in the upper chest, thus causing symptoms such as facial heat resembling high wind. When phlegm-heat interact and stir up wind, and wind and fire disturb each other, it leads to mental confusion and dizziness, hence termed *Feng Xuan*. In adults, it is called *Dian* (Manic-depressive psychosis); in children, it is called *Xian* (Epilepsy). Their essence is the same. This formula cures ten thousand cases without exception, but one must fear that imprecise syndrome assessment may lead to deviation or error. Generally, one must avoid eating meats of the twelve zodiac animals. If complicated by *Ben Tun* (Rushing Pig Syndrome/Abdominal Masses), attacks often involve shortness of breath; if shortness of breath occurs, death is incurable. Therefore, this single decoction is suitable for weighing severity and appropriateness; do not assume it is not a serious illness because of this. There are ten formulas in total for treating various *Feng Xuan*, including decoctions, powders, pills, and boiled preparations. For ordinary people at the initial onset, *Xuming Tang* (Life-Restoring Decoction) should be administered urgently. In critical distress, one need only calculate the moxibustion acupoints and needle them with fire needles; there will be no case that does not recover. Needling immediately upon onset followed by moxibustion is most excellent. The moxibustion methods are listed subsequently. Since I began my practice over thirty years ago, I have saved dozens to hundreds of people, none of whom failed to recover. May those who understand this formula in later generations refrain from mixing it with other techniques.
Formula for treating *Feng Xuan* characterized by irritability, mental confusion, loss of consciousness, foaming at the mouth, opisthotonos (rigid arching of the back) of the four limbs, upward reversion of the eyes, and trismus (lockjaw) preventing speech.
Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, 1 sheng 2 he) Sheng Di Huang Zhi (Fresh Rehmannia Root Juice, 1 sheng) Long Chi (Dragon Teeth) Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root) Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) (each 4 liang) Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) (3 liang)
Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (7 liang) Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Core) (2 liang) Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (3 fen)
The above ten ingredients are crushed. Boil in 10 dou of water until reduced to 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. If there is rebellious Qi, increase Fu Zi to 1 liang, add Zi Su Zi (Perillae Fructus) 5 he, and Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 0.5 liang.
