Methods for treating dog bites from *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept up the Sleeve).
Take hot ashes from the stove, sprinkle them on the wound, wrap and bind it. (*Qianjin Yaofang* records the same method.)
Another prescription:
Take two *fangcunbi* (a square-inch measure) of dried ginger powder orally, or take half a *sheng* (approx. 200ml) of ginger juice; both are effective.
Methods for treating general dog bites from *Jiyan Fang* (Verified Prescriptions):
Mix vinegar with ashes and apply to the affected area; this is beneficial. (*Qianjin Yaofang* records the same method.)
Methods for treating general dog bites from *Qianjin Yaofang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold):
Burn the dog's tail into ash and apply it to the wound, twice daily. Alternatively, burn the ash of a snake that died naturally, grind it into fine powder, and apply it into the ulcer.
Another prescription:
Take one handful of the white bark from the southeast branch of a peach tree, boil it in one *sheng* (approx. 200ml) of water until reduced to five *ge* (approx. 100ml), and drink it.
Another prescription:
Take seven seeds of *Lángdàngzǐ* (Datura metel seed), swallow them with water, once daily, stop when cured.
Another prescription:
Grind plum seeds into powder and take them with wine.
Another prescription:
Take one rat caught in the twelfth lunar month, fry it in lard (pig fat) until it becomes like ointment, filter out the dregs, wait for it to solidify, and apply it to the wound.
Methods for treating general dog bites from *Gujin Luyan* (Records Verified Through Generations):
First wash the wound with water, allow the blood to flow without stopping it. Continue washing until the bleeding stops spontaneously, then wrap it with a white cloth to heal.
*Qianjin Yaofang* states: Generally, at the end of spring and early summer, rabies (madness) outbreaks are common. One must warn the weak and young to carry sticks for prevention. If bitten despite precautions, nothing is more effective than moxibustion.
Within one hundred days, not a single day should be missed to avoid disaster. If one sees the wound healed and pain subsided, claiming recovery, this is most terrifying; great calamity is imminent, and death may come within dawn and dusk. Once bitten by a rabid dog, madness ensues, and the spirit becomes altered. How can one know? Observe during moxibustion: after each moxa cone burns down, one feels a sudden clarity in the heart and mind, realizing the bite immediately induced madness. Therefore, one must deeply understand this; this disease is extremely severe, yet people often轻视 (look down upon) it and do not take it seriously. Many die sitting upright every year. When I first began studying medicine, before making it my profession, someone suffering from this came to ask me. I did not know how to respond, and several people died under my care because of this. From then on, I resolved to study earnestly. Since understanding this, all treated patients recovered. I realized there are few good physicians in the world, and half die in vain; these words are not false. Therefore, future students must master this method. Each of the remaining prescriptions requires deep contemplation. Keep them in mind and study diligently to achieve mastery. Do not think you understand just one or two methods...
Another method for treating rabid dog bites:
Take one piece of dried snake meat, remove the head, roast it, grind it into powder, and take half a *fenbi* (a small spoon measure) orally, twice daily.
Another prescription:
Drink three *sheng* (approx. 600ml) of juice extracted from blue cloth.
Another prescription:
Drink one to two *sheng* (approx. 200-400ml) of donkey urine; this is beneficial.
Another prescription:
Crush *Lángdànggēn* (Datura root) and mix with salt to apply to the wound, three times daily.
Methods for treating dog bites from *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*:
First, suck out the toxic blood, then perform moxibustion directly on the wound ten cones. Remove the scab the next day, moxibustiate one cone daily, continuing for one hundred days, then stop. Avoid alcohol. (*Qianjin Yaofang*, Wen Zhong's *Beiji Duanju*, and *Gujin Luyan* record the same.)
Another prescription:
Crush *Diyugen* (Sanguisorba officinalis root), squeeze out the juice, and apply to the wound. If fresh roots are unavailable, use dried roots, boil them in water to extract the juice, and drink it. Continue for over one hundred days. Take one *fangcunbi* of powder daily, three times a day, while also applying it to the wound. (*Qianjin Yaofang* records the same.)
Another prescription:
Crush *Xie* (Allium macrostemon/small green onion) and squeeze out the juice to apply to the wound. Also drink one *sheng* (approx. 200ml), three times daily. Stop only when the wound heals. This also treats recurrences after apparent healing. (*Qianjin Yaofang* records the same.)
Another prescription:
Apply clear liquid from bean paste to the wound, three to four times daily, until healed. (*Qianjin Yaofang* records the same.)
Methods for treating rabid dog bites from *Duanju Fang* (Short Drama Prescriptions):
Scrape wild wolf teeth or tiger bones into powder, take one *fangcunbi* orally. For those already exhibiting madness like a dog, taking this medicine will cure them. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* records the same.)
Another prescription:
Burn human hair and skin into ash in equal proportions, mix with water, and drink one cup. If the patient has red eyes and trismus (lockjaw), pry open the teeth and administer the mixture. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang*, *Qianjin Yaofang* record the same.)
Another prescription:
Crush *Dihuang* (Rehmannia glutinosa root) to extract juice, drink it, and apply it to the wound. Continue for over one hundred days. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* records the same.)
There is also a prescription for cases where many treatments fail, toxins attack causing mental confusion, and the patient makes dog-like sounds. (Note: "Tong" refers to movement/action.)
Burn skull bone into ash, mix with flowing water from the east, and take one *fangcunbi* orally. Stop when symptoms cease. Generally, if bitten by a rabid dog, an episode occurs every seven days. If no episode occurs after three cycles of seven days (21 days), one is safe, but one must pass one hundred days for complete safety. Every seven days, crush *Xie* (or chives) to extract juice, drink two to three *sheng*. Furthermore, one must forbid eating dog meat and silkworm pupae for life. If consumed and the disease recurs, it cannot be saved. During the period before the wound heals, avoid raw fish, fatty meats, and all cold foods. Only eat...
If the disease recurs, here is the treatment:
Eat raw toad meat slices; this is excellent. It can also be roasted and eaten. The patient need not know. Doing this immediately after the bite prevents onset. (*Jiyan Fang*, Wen Zhong's *Beiji*, *Qianjin Yaofang*, *Beiji*, *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* record the same. Yao Boshuo notes: make into slices, swallow with minced garlic.)
Another prescription:
Crush fresh ginger to extract one *sheng* (approx. 200ml) of juice; taking this amount is good.
Cui Shi's method for treating rabid dog bites:
Upon being bitten by a rabid dog, immediately suck out the blood and spit it out quickly; do not swallow. Then crush apricot kernels (*Xingren*) and tiger teeth (*Da Chong Ya*), knead them into cakes, and apply them to the wound. Perform moxibustion continuously for fourteen cones (two sevens). Thereafter, moxibustiate one or two cones daily, keeping the apricot kernel cake applied. Must continue for one hundred days to stop. Within one hundred days, ensure the wound does not fully heal. If tiger teeth are unavailable, using apricot kernels alone is acceptable. Rabid dog bites tend to flare up every seven days. On the seventh day, crush chive juice and drink one large *he* (approx. 40-50ml), twice daily. Even if not the seventh day, drinking one or two *he* on any given day is very good. In winter, use chive root juice. After two or three days, take one *he* of apricot kernels, crush them finely, filter the juice, and mix with tiger teeth. Without teeth, bones can be used. Boil thoroughly to extract one *sheng* (approx. 200ml) of juice. Also prepare one *he* of bamboo sap (*Zhuli*), mix with the apricot kernel milk/juice, boil for one or two boils, divide into three doses, and consume within one day. Also take the brain of the biting dog...
Another prescription:
Mix tiger bone ash with apricot kernel ointment and apply; this is very beneficial.
Wen Zhong's *Jiujifang* (Emergency Prescriptions) for treating rabid dog bites, regardless of depth:
Immediately upon being bitten, wash with cold water to stop bleeding, bandage it. If the wound is large and deep, soak it in running water until bleeding stops, then bandage according to standard procedure, avoiding other coverings. Strictly avoid wind; do not fear. Upon being bitten, immediately provide any food available to the patient; later, the disease will not develop. (From Volume 8)
*Bixiao Fang* (Effective Prescriptions) for treating rabid dog bites:
Gardenia bark (burned to ash) and Realgar (Shi Liuhuang, processed sulfur) (ground to powder).
Grind these two ingredients into powder and apply to the wound, changing once daily. (*Jiuji Fang* records the same.)
Another prescription:
Take earthworm feces, mix with water to form mud, and apply as a seal. When hairs grow over it and fall off, it is healed.
Another prescription:
Drink one *sheng* (approx. 200ml) of donkey manure juice; it cures immediately.
Another prescription:
Apricot kernels (tips removed) and Fermented soybeans (Dou Chi) (one tael each); Chive roots (one handful, washed clean).
Grind these three ingredients into cakes. Thickness should be one to two fen, sized to fit the wound. Apply to the bite site. Make large moxa cones and moxibustiate over the cake until heat penetrates; this cures.
Another prescription:
Tiger bone and Furnace Liniment (Duanshi, likely calcined iron oxide or similar).
Mix these two ingredients with lard from the twelfth lunar month to form cakes, dry them in the sun, grind into powder, and apply to the wound; this is beneficial. (Both from Volume 6)
