The *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up the Sleeve) states that this character is written as "Chai" (Scorpion), referring to bees and scorpions. They strike suddenly from within the bosom or sleeve, causing even brave warriors like Meng Ben and Xia Yu to be terrified, indicating that although they are small, they are venomous and their attack is unexpected. People commonly refer to the lizard as "Chai Zi," but lizards have never harmed humans; it is said they cannot sting. They appear when thunder rolls, presumably being extremely toxic. Calligraphers call the lizard "Shou Gong." The *Ben Cao Jing* (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) states that Shou Gong is indeed the lizard. If following Dongfang Shuo's description, these would be two different creatures. Currently, neither lizards nor snakes are considered by physicians to sting people. Among lizards, there are those with five colors, also called dragons, which should not be killed as doing so may cause fatal shock. There is now another small black insect with a raised tail. People call it "Jia Chong" (Armored Insect); its tail resembles that of the "Che Huan" (a type of insect) having two tails. It is also said that this insect is "Chai," but its exact identity remains unclear.
Additionally, a prescription for treating injuries from scorpion stings.
Crush Changsi Cao (Hedyotis diffusa or similar herb), squeeze out the juice, and wash the wound with it. (From Volume VIII)
A prescription from *Gujin Luyan* for treating injuries from scorpion stings.
Take soil from under eaves, mix with water, apply to the affected area, and it will heal immediately. (From Volume XLV)
Regarding "She Gong" (Arrow Frog/Toad) toxicity in *Beiji Lun*: In the Jiangnan region, there exists this venomous insect named She Gong, also known as Duan Hu (Short Fox) or Yu (Hidden One). It usually inhabits mountain streams. When a person accidentally steps into the water, this insect, possessing a transverse bone in its mouth shaped like a crossbow, shoots its breath at the person's shadow, causing illness. Its diagnostic method is as follows: initially, symptoms may resemble Taiyang disease (Exterior Syndrome), or Zhong E (Sudden Evil Invasion), or the patient may be unable to speak, or suffer from body stiffness and pain, aversion to cold with high fever, limb spasms, and headache. Symptoms worsen from morning to evening. Severe cases may experience bleeding from the gums within three days if untreated, leading to death. Four types of skin manifestations may appear on the body. Upon initial suspicion, examine the whole body. Type one resembles a black mole with surrounding skin protruding and red; contact with clothing feels like pricking thorns. Type two forms an ulcer that eventually perforates and sinks. Type three protrudes like a stone abscess. Type four burns like fire, raising flesh into a sore; this type is most urgent and fatal. Living in areas with this toxin, during heavy rains or when floodwaters flow into homes, the insect may shoot at people. Keeping geese is recommended, as they eat the insect. Carrying pure white geese on boats repels the toxin; white ducks are also effective. Carrying raw gold, rhinoceros horn, and musk is beneficial. Furthermore, if any of the four types of sores appear, treat urgently:
Quickly moxa around the perimeter of the sore, one cun away, applying one hundred moxa cones per point, and one hundred cones directly on the sore. This is highly effective. (Same as *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*)
Another prescription for She Gong toxicity.
Use seven white chicken droppings. Mix with hot water and apply to the sore. (Same as *Bixiao Fang*, *Wenzhong Fang*, *Beiji Qianjin Yaofang*, *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*, all from Volume IX)
An early treatment prescription from *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* upon first noticing the sore.
Grind rhinoceros horn with water and apply; reapply when dry. Alternatively, use fine powder mixed with musk. Another method suggests taking one Fang Cun Bi (a measure of volume) orally.
Another prescription.
Wrap the "Chi Mu Chong" (Fermented Bean Insect) in the skin of white plums and swallow 6-7 pieces. (This prescription specifies taking one Chi Mu Chong that floats and moves on water, placing it in the mouth for immediate recovery.)
Description of the She Gong insect: In repose, it resembles a large fly, bites hair, and has male and female forms. Males have two horizontal horns at the mouth corners capable of flexion and extension. A long horn extends horizontally before the mouth, with the crossbow mechanism above its tip, curved like a bow, using breath as an arrow and water current for propulsion. Victims become unable to speak. In winter, they hibernate in soil where snow does not freeze due to internal heat vaporization. Digging them up from known locations and carrying them helps. Finding them near streams while walking is common. If poisoned, consume powdered form. In summer, they are invisible in water. It is said they shoot sand at shadows to cause illness. To cross water, throw stones first to trigger the emission of the horn-crossbow mechanism.
Another prescription.
Take one piece of Gleditsia sinensis (Zao Jia) about one chi two cun long, crush it, decoct with one sheng of vinegar until thick like syrup, remove dregs, and apply to the toxin. (Same as *Wenzhong Fang*, *Beiji Fang*)
Another prescription.
Crush Portulaca oleracea (Ma Chi Xian), drink one sheng of juice, and apply the residue to the sore. Do this 4-5 times daily for good results. (Same as *Wenzhong Fang*, *Beiji Fang*)
*Jiyan Fang* treats She Gong poisoning presenting with chills, fever, and localized sores, differing from standard prescriptions.
Crush Amaranthus tricolor (Chi Xian) including stems and leaves, squeeze out juice, take one sheng orally, administered multiple times daily. (Same as *Qianjin Yaofang*, *Beiji Fang*, *Wenzhong Fang*, *Bixiao Fang* abridged version, *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*; Yao notes taking seven he, four times daily.)
Another prescription.
Rhinoceros horn (Xi Jiao), Cimicifuga foetida (Sheng Ma), Aconitum carmichaelii root (Wu Tou Gen) (each 2 liang).
Decoct the above three ingredients in four sheng of water to obtain one and a half sheng. Strain and divide into two doses, taken one meal interval apart. Prepare again if necessary. (Same as *Qianjin Yaofang*)
Another prescription.
Take a handful of fresh Cornus officinalis (Shu Yu) stems and leaves, discard ends, crush the middle part thoroughly, decoct in two sheng of water to obtain eight he, take all at once. (Same as *Qianjin Yaofang*)
Treatment for She Gong sores presents in three types: Type one is black like a pressed seed skin, surrounded by redness, painful upon clothing contact; Type two forms ulcers that perforate, accompanied by evening chills and fever; Type four burns like fire, most urgent, fatal within days. Prescription for chills and fever caused by this disease:
Aconitum carmichaelii root (Wu Tou Gen) (2 liang), Cimicifuga foetida (Sheng Ma) (2 liang).
Cut the above two ingredients, decoct in three sheng of water to obtain one sheng. Take warm all at once. Apply residue to sores. (Same as *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*, *Qianjin Yaofang*, *Wenzhong Fang*, *Beiji Fang*; *Gujin Luyan* states using leaves of Wu Shan if root is unavailable, from Volume I)
*Qianjin Yaofang* treats She Gong infection where no sore has formed yet, only feeling chilly and trembling. When sores form, resembling secretions from earwigs or phlegmonous erysipelas:
Crush mustard seeds, mix with sour vinegar to make a thick paste, apply to sores. Pain stops within half a day. (Same as *Gujin Luyan*)
Another prescription.
Take leaves of Agrimonia pilosa (Ye Lang Ya); in winter, use roots and branches. Crush and apply to the affected area. Also drink 4-5 he of juice.
It is also stated that stone lice on mountain plants bite humans, penetrating flesh and causing infiltrative swelling:
Moxa to block the pathway, and it heals.
Furthermore, when traveling mountain paths through vegetation, constantly apply pig fat from the twelfth lunar month between toes and on shoe-contact areas to prevent bites.
In Jiangnan, toxic masses resembling She Gong cause sudden swelling and sores. Five Fragrances Powder Prescription:
Calappa calappa shell (Jia Xiang), Rhinoceros horn (Xi Jiao, powdered), Testudo chinensis shell (Bie Jia, roasted until yellow), Frankincense (Xun Lu Xiang), Cimicifuga foetida (Sheng Ma), Aconitum carmichaelii root (Wu Tou Gen), Evodia rutaecarpa (Wu Zhu Yu), Aquilaria sinensis (Chen Xiang), Syzygium aromaticum (Ding Xiang) (each 3 fen), Coptis chinensis (Huang Lian), Antelope horn (Ling Yang Jiao, powdered), Ostrea gigas (Mu Li, roasted), Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Gan Cao, roasted), Scutellaria baicalensis (Huang Qin) (each 4 fen), Phellodendron amurense (Huang Bo) (6 fen).
Grind the above fifteen ingredients into powder. Take one Fang Cun Bi with water, three times daily. Also mix with egg white and apply topically. Change when dry. Wash with water and a little [herb]. Avoid Amaranth, pork, and seaweed. (From Volume XXVI)
Emergency rescue prescription for She Gong toxicity.
Slice Allium sativum (Hu Suan/Garlic), apply to sore, moxa seven cones. Good effect.
*Gujin Luyan* prescription for She Gong poisoning with existing sores.
Take one large centipede, roast and grind to powder, mix with vinegar and apply to sore. Pain stops. (Same as *Qianjin Yaofang*)
