Eyes have a specialized discipline, and many medical texts discuss it briefly. However, when eye symptoms occur concurrently with other diseases, how can the principles of treating eye diseases be ignored? The essence of the five zang organs and six fu organs all ascend to nourish the eyes, but the general principle lies in three meridians: the Liver opens into the eyes (the liver meridian connects to the eyes), so discussions on eye diseases must begin with the Liver. However, if the Heart spirit is scattered, causing sudden perception of bizarre phenomena, or if essence scatters leading to diplopia (seeing one object as two), then the Heart becomes a critical factor for eye diseases, because all vessels belong to the eyes, and the Heart governs the vessels; meanwhile, the Spleen is the convergence point of all yin meridians. Carefully differentiate between deficiency (Xu) and excess (Shi), and further distinguish whether the pathology resides in Qi or Blood. Acute onset at the exterior level indicates an Excess pattern, while chronic illness at the interior level indicates a Deficiency pattern. In Deficiency patterns, symptoms include blurred vision, floating black spots, and dilated pupils; if in Qi, there is dryness and unclear vision; if in Blood, there is soreness, dryness, and lack of moisture. Treatment should nourish Liver Blood and calm the Heart Spirit, prioritizing the regulation of the Spleen and Stomach. In Excess patterns, symptoms include redness, swelling, pain, epiblepharon (eyelid margin inflammation), discharge, and tearing. Treatment should dispel Wind, scatter Dampness, cool the Blood, and soothe the Liver. This constitutes the general principles of treating eye diseases. For eye drops and washing formulas, only acrid-ping (neutral) herbs are suitable. If cold-cooling and obstructive herbs are used, it may cause pathogenic heat to attack inward, resulting in corneal opacity (Yi Zhang). Furthermore, recklessly washing the eyes with cold water, cold medicines, or cold objects can lead to blindness; this must not be neglected.
The eyes are the orifice of the Liver, so eye diseases should be attributed to the Liver. Any conditions involving redness, swelling, pain, or those occurring temporarily in young adults, should be treated as Liver Excess with Blood Heat. The Liver contains Ministerial Fire... [Text gap inferred]. Reviewing popular ophthalmology books, they often use bitter-cold and acrid-dispersing herbs, which is inappropriate. Therefore, I formulated Fumu Tang (Restore Vision Decoction). Although the herbs are mild, it has proven effective repeatedly. Because the eyes are... [Text gap inferred].
1. When fire flares up severely causing extreme redness and pain, apply Jizi Huanglian Gao (Chicken Egg Coptis Ointment) to the eyes. Do not allow the patient to close their eyes tightly; wait for hot tears to flow out. It will heal after several applications.
2. For individuals whose vitality declines with age, or due to excessive alcohol and sexual indulgence, presenting with no swelling or pain but rather photophobia (fear of light), dim vision, inability to stare steadily, and eyeball pain as if being dug out, these belong to Kidney and Liver Deficiency. Refer to the treatment guidelines for Internal Obstruction (Nei Zhang).
3. For injured eyes with corneal perforation, apply saliva from a cow's mouth. If the eyeball protrudes, gently massage it back into place. Apply twice daily, avoiding wind exposure. Even with corneal perforation, recovery is possible.
4. For contusions and bruising around the eyes caused by blows, prepare a powder of raw Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), mix with water, and apply externally.

Jizi Huanglian Gao (Chicken Egg Coptis Ointment)
Jizi (Chicken Egg, one unit)
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, coarse powder, 1 qian)
Make a small hole in the egg, extract the egg white. Place the Huanglian powder on top of the egg white in a porcelain bowl. Stir vigorously and rapidly with chopsticks hundreds of times until it forms foam, yielding about half a bowl. Strain the clear liquid and apply to the eyes. Do not squeeze the eyelids tightly to expel the medicine; wait for hot tears to flow out. It heals after several applications. Adding a small amount of Bing Pian (Borneolum Syntheticum) is especially beneficial. (Note: This formula treats "Fire Eye" (acute conjunctivitis), characterized by sudden redness, pain, and heat in the skin and muscles, which is superficial and easy to resolve. Several applications can cure it. However, if heat originates internally and fire resides in the Yin aspect, this cold-cooling method is unsuitable. It cannot remove internal heat and may instead trap the pathogenic fire.)
