Tears are the fluid of the Liver. When wind moves, water flows; when wind stirs, tears flow. Furthermore, excessive heat in the Liver causes excessive tearing, similar to how bamboo sap is extracted by fire; tearing upon exposure to wind is due to the combination of wind and fire. When fire erupts and wind rushes upward, they contend with each other causing tearing. Although dispersing wind and clearing fire is the correct treatment principle, one must also carefully examine the deficiency or excess of the Liver channel. For excess patterns, Fumu Tang (Restore Vision Decoction) is used with added Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Manjingzi (Vitex Fruit), and Shouwu (Polygonum Multiflorum Root); for deficiency patterns, Renshen (Ginseng Root) is added. Externally, mulberry leaves harvested after frost are decocted in water, and the eyes are frequently washed with it.
Fumu Tang (See previous section on Red and Swollen Eyes).
Whenever the eyes feel dizzy, tear excessively, and itch unbearably, it is due to wind. Wind disturbs Liver wood, blowing and stirring it, thus causing continuous dizziness; because there is no fire, there is no pain. The treatment focuses on dispersing wind, using Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) with added Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), Ziye (Perilla Leaf), and Bohe (Mint Leaf), each 2 qian, as the main prescription, or adding Chantui (Cicada Slough) and Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus).
Siwu Tang (General Formula 23).
If the eyes have no other diseases normally, the external contour is not damaged, and the internal pupil is not injured, but sudden blindness occurs, this is a sign of Qi collapse and severe deficiency. It is urgent to decoct Renshen Gao (Ginseng Paste) or Baoyuan Tang (Preserve Origin Decoction) in large doses and administer as paste. For blood collapse, treat similarly. The Classics state: "For blood collapse, tonify Qi."
1. Some who habitually drink hot wine injure Stomach Qi, causing turbid blood to accumulate within. Their physique is solid but the pulse is choppy. Use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) with added Ziye (Perilla Leaf) for several doses to cure. (Note: In Danxi's medical cases, there is a character "mo" [powder] after Renshen.)
1. Some who contract Yin-dampness find their Stomach Yang trapped, suddenly losing vision or seeing dimly at times. These patients likely have reduced appetite, mental fatigue, and a slow, large, and forceless pulse. Use Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) as the sovereign herb, Huangqi (Astragalus Root) and Fuling (Poria) as minister herbs, and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root) as envoy herb. Cure after taking more than ten doses.
1. Some experience unclear vision or redness and swelling upon waking from sleep, which resolves after a long time. This is due to Blood heat. Soak Banliang (half sheng) of Jingmi (Japonica Rice) in Shengdi Zhi (Rehmannia Juice), sun-dry until thoroughly dry, then soak and dry again three times. Decoct in a porcelain bottle until boiling, add four or five spoons of Rehmannia rice, and cook into a thin porridge soup. When warm, drink three cups after being half-full of food, then sleep. Cure in a few days. Alternatively, use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) removing Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Wallichii Rhizome), doubling Shengdi (Rehmannia Root), and adding Mudanpi (Tree Peony Bark) and Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) fried in wine, each 1 qian. Decoct in water and take before bed. Cure in a few doses.
